미국 명문대 지원 학생, "에세이 잘 준비하고 있나?"
공통원서-코엘리션 에세이 주제 3월에 발표
아이비리그 당락 에세이가 가른다
미래교육, 하버드-예일 등 명문대 출신 튜터 지도
미국 대학 지원을 할 때 에세이는 매우 중요하다.
비 학업적 요소에서 가장 중요하게 평가는 항목이 바로 '에세이'다. 에세이는 학생의 내면을 들여다 볼 수 있는 가장 중요한 요소다. 에세이는 교사 추천서 그리고 특별활동과 함께 비학업적 요소에 속한다. 그런데 많은 학생들이 이 에세이의 중요성을 잘 인식하지 못한다. 성적이 좋은 학생이라고 하더라도 상위권 대학의 경우 이 에세이를 제대로 쓰지 못하면 고배를 마신다. 그만큼 에세이는 중요하다. 그런데 그 중요성을 제대로 인식하지 못하고 여전히 SAT 공부에 매달리는 'ㅂㅂ'들이 많다.
특히 SAT가 테스트 옵셔널로 바뀐 상황에서 더욱 에세이가 중요해졌다. 오늘은 2022학년도 미국 대학 원서를 제출할 때 내야하는 공통원서와 코엘리션 에세이 주제를 알려드린다. 이 두 플랫폼의 에세이는 이미 지난 3월에 발표됐고, 대학을 준비하는 많은 학생들이 벌써 브레인 스토밍을 하고 있다. 미래교육연구소에서 필자의 컨설팅을 받고 있는 학생들은 이번 6월 한달을 '셀프 브레인스토밍' 기간으로 삼고, 열심히 준비를 하고 있다. 이 과정이 끝나면 미래교육연구소의 하버드, 예일 출신 전문 튜터들이 에세이를 지도하게 된다. 이어서 8월에 들어서면 각 대학별 부가 에세이가 나온다. 이 때 다시 대학별 에세이를 검토하고 작성에 들어가야 한다.

[공통원서 에세이]
Below is the full set of Common App essay prompts for 2021-2022.
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
[코엘리션 에세이]
1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
2. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
3. Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
4. What is the hardest part of being a student now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
5. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.
