스탠퍼드 대학원 석사, 가난한 학생 장학금 받아 가기
미래교육연구소는 그동안 미국 사립대학에서 재정보조/장학금을 받고 가난한 학생도 갈 수 있는 길을 열어 주었다. 최근에는 가난하지만 능력있는 학생들이 미국이나 독일, 노르웨이 대학원에 돈 걱정 없이 갈 수 있는 방법에 대해 문의 하는 부모와 학생들이 많아졌다. 그래서 시간 나는 대로 미국, 독일, 노르웨이 대학원에 학비 없거나(무료) 또는 장학금/재정보조를 받아서 갈 수 있는 길에 대해 안내를 하려고 한다.
앞서 예일대학교 미술 대학원에서 학비 걱정 없이 공부할 수 있는 길을 살펴 보았다.
오늘은 스탠퍼드 대학원에서 학비 걱정 없이 공부할 수 있는 길을 알아보려고 한다. 스탠퍼드 일반대학원은 크게 ▶School of Engineering, ▶School of Humanities and Sciences, ▶School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences, ▶Graduate School of Education, ▶School of Medicine, ▶School of Law, ▶Graduate School of Business, ▶School of Medicine Biosciences
이 가운데서 ▶School of Engineering, ▶School of Humanities and Sciences, ▶School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences, ▶Graduate School of Education은 상대적으로 로스쿨, 의대, 경영대보다 어렵지 않다.
여기서 재정보조를 받고 갈 수 있는 대학도 이 대학들이 대상이다. 물론 경영 대학도 많은 재정보조를 준다. 국제학생들에게도 열려있다.
오늘은 School of Humanities and Sciences 에 대해 알아본다. 한국 대학식으로 말하면 일반 대학원이다. 인문학과 자연과학 쪽 전공을 하는 대학원이다. 대부분의 박사과정 학생들은 등록금과 생활비 등 박사과정 기간에 대한 재정적 지원을 받는 반면 석사과정 학생들에 대한 재정적 지원은 제한적인 경우가 많다. 자금 지원 패키지는 교육 및 연구 요건에 따라 전공별로 다르다.
일반적으로 다음과 같은 재정보조가 제공된다.
1. FELLOWSHIPS
Usually cover tuition and provide a stipend for your living expenses
External fellowships can be used at most accredited programs
Start looking early at opportunities such as the McNair Scholars Program and at websites that collect external fellowship opportunities such as these sites from Stanford, UCLA, and Columbia.
Many are restricted to U.S. citizens/permanent residents
Federal agencies, private foundations, corporations, and professional organizations offer awards for graduate study.
Internal, university-sponsored fellowships, based on faculty/department nominations
2. RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS (RA)
Usually provide a salary and cover tuition
Perform research as directed by faculty
Your work might not be directly related to your own thesis research
3. TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS (TA)
Usually provide a salary and cover tuition
Might include grading papers, teaching (lectures or TA sections), holding office hours
Required by some departments for degree
English proficiency may be required, or you might need to obtain additional language training
확실한 재정보조를 받아서 대학원에 가는 길은 석박사 통합 과정으로 가는 것이다. 이 경우에는 학비와 생활비까지 대학으로부터 제공받고, 경제적 어려움 없이 대학원을 박사과정까지 다닐 수 있다.
■ 교육 대학원(Graduate School of Education)으로 갈 경우에는 다음과 같은 재정보조 혜택을 받을 수 있다.
Dean’s fellowships : 석사과정 딘 펠로우십은 학생의 우수한 학업성적과 프로그램 다양성과 교육현장에 기여할 수 있는 잠재력을 인정하는 권위 있는 상이다. 이 펠로우쉽은 다양한 학생들을 모집하고 지역사회를 풍요롭게 하기 위한 지속적인 노력의 일환이다. 펠로우십의 대가로 어떠한 서비스도 기대되지 않으며 펠로우십을 상환할 필요도 없다. 합격과 함께 딘의 펠로우십이 수여된다. 합격 통지서에 펠로우쉽 정보가 없는 경우, 펠로우쉽이 수여되지 않은 것이다. 펠로우십 제안은 최종적이며 협상할 수 없다. 미국 시민권자나 국제학생에게 동일하게 적용된다.
이 외에 스탠포드 대학에서 주는 론과 The Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program이 있다. KHS(Knight-Hennessy Scholars) 프로그램은 세계가 직면하고 있는 점점 더 복잡해지는 과제를 해결하기 위해 차세대 글로벌 리더를 준비하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 프로그램은 매년 최대 100명의 학생을 선발하고 스탠퍼드 대학 석사과정 수강료 전액을 재정적으로 지원한다. 바로 이 프로그램의 재정보조를 받는 것이 최고의 선택일 것이다.
국제학생이 받을 수 있는 재정보조는 다음과 같다. 잘 준비를 하면 받을 수 있는 재정보조다.

만일 재정보조를 받지 않고 스탠퍼드 대학에 등록을 했는데 그 뒤 재정보조가 필요하게 됐다면 다음과 같은 소스를 생각해 볼 수 있다.
Resources for enrolled students
The GSE and Stanford University offer various forms of financial support to enrolled students.
GSE resources
Once master’s students matriculate, there are a variety of resources available to support academic work and unanticipated needs.
▶Travel fellowships are awarded for travel associated with paper presentations at conferences during a GSE master’s student’s academic program.
▶GSE Student Emergency Fund assists graduate students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses causing financial hardship. This fund is meant to support those who cannot reasonably resolve their financial difficulty through fellowships, loans, or personal resources.
▶ICE/IEPA MA Fund supports academic and professional development (e.g., MA paper research, conferences) in the field of international comparative education.
■ Stanford University resources
▶Cardinal Care subsidy: The university’s Cardinal Care student health insurance plan is managed by the Vaden Health Center. The Financial Aid Office administers an automatic university-wide subsidy program for graduate students.
▶Graduate Student Aid Fund: The Financial Aid Office assists a limited number of graduate students with university fees such as the Campus Health Service Fee and Cardinal Care Insurance when those fees cause significant hardship.
▶Emergency Grant-In-Aid Fund assists graduate students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses (e.g., medical or dental) causing financial hardship.
▶Graduate Family Grant provides need-based funding for graduate students with dependent children. Funds may be used flexibly to cover expenses such as childcare, healthcare, insurance and rent.
▶Graduate housing loan offers temporary financial support to graduate students for off-campus housing move-in costs, such as first and last month's rent and security deposit.
▶Paid internships: Internships may be for pay or course credit, but not both for the same work. Programs that require students to complete an internship may provide paid opportunities. Approval from your program director is required.
▶Additional hourly work: Students may work for pay as "casual labor" at Stanford for up to eight hours a week, provided work does not adversely impact the academic program. Approval from your program director is required.
