SAT 점수 선택제 <1> 모든 점수 내는 대학

많은 학부모들은 "SAT를 여러번 보면 불리하다. 대학이 SAT 시험을 여러번 치른 학생을 싫어한다"고 알고 있다. 이 정보의 소스를 물으면 자신이 아는 학부모 혹은 학원 선생이 말을 했다고 한다. 그러나 이 말은 절반만 맞았다. 학생이 여러번 SAT시험을 본다고 불리한 것은 아니다. 대학이 학생의 시험 본 횟수를 정확히 아는 것이 아니기 때문이다.
사실 이것은 대학이 SAT 점수 리포트와 관련해 어떤 정책을 쓰느냐에 달려있다. 2008년 이전까지는 학생이 치른 모든 SAT 결과를 조건 없이 모두 대학에 전달하는 형태였지만 2008년부터는 전면 개편됐다. 즉, 대학 정책에 따라 전부를 보내야 하는 경우도 있지만 잘치른 섹션만 보낼 수도 있게 됐다.
이는 많은 부모들이 알고 있는 '스코어 초이스(Score Choice)' 시스템이다. 지원자의 선택에 따라 선정된 시험 성적을 해당 학교에 보낼 수 있게 한 모듈이다. 학생들에겐 매우 매력적이고 혁신적인 정책이었지만, 이를 반대하는 대학들도 많았다. 그래서 대학마다 다른 정책을 채택하게 됐다. 결국 칼리지보드는 전체 성적을 요구하는 대학에는 전체 결과를 보내고 있고, 스코어 초이스를 하는 대학에는 거기에 맞는 성적만 보내고 있다.
SAT 점수 리포트 방법에는 5가지가 있다. 이 글에서는 우선 첫 번째 방법을 소개하고, 이어지는 글에서 나머지 방법까지 소개하도록 하겠다.
1) 모든 점수 보내야 하는 대학
칼리지 보드의 스코어초이스 정책을 인정하지 않는 대학들이다. 이들 대학은 모든 SAT 성적 기록을 모두 보고 받는 2008년 이전의 정책을 여전히 고수한다. 대표적인 대학으로 스탠퍼드, 가주 UC 캠퍼스, 포모나칼리지, 라이스가 있다.
Notable Colleges That Require You to Send All SAT Scores
Before we get to the complete list of colleges that require all SAT scores, we'll highlight some top schools you might be interested in. We include quotes from their admissions websites to give you an idea as to how serious they are about their scoring policies. Bold emphasis is mine.
“Georgetown University does not participate in the Score Choice option available through the College Board. Georgetown requires that you submit scores from all test sittings of the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests."
University of California System
“In the College Board's Score Choice module, ensure that all scores are sent to UC. We require all scores and will use the highest scores from a single administration."
This is the policy for all schools in the University of California system, including UC Berkeley and UCLA.
Penn used to require all scores but has since altered its policy somewhat:
"Although we permit Score Choice, we encourage students to submit their entire testing history for both ACT and SAT exams."
"Applicants who have taken the SAT or ACT exam multiple times should report all scores from whichever test they choose to report. Applicants who choose to report scores from both the SAT and ACT should report all scores received on both tests. "
