주립 아이비(Public Ivy) 대학에 가고 싶다
'퍼블릭 아이비'란 개념은 리버드 몰이 1985년에 쓴 'Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities' 에서 처음으로 언급됐다. 그는 주립대학의 저렴한 학비로 원래 아이비리그인 8개 대학의 분위기를 경험해 볼 수 있다고 주장하면서 주립대학 8개를 선정, 소개했다.
The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education은 퍼블릭 아이비에 대해 "원래 아이비리그 학교들과 경쟁할 수 있는 능력이 가진 대학들이다. 슈퍼스타 교수진을 보유하고 있고, 모든 인종의 가장 우수하고 영리한 학생들이 다니고 있다."고 말하고 있다.
리버드 몰은 1959년 예일대에서 신학 석사학위를 받았고 예일대 입학 사정관, 보도인대, UC 산타크루즈, 바사대 입학처장을 지냈다. 그는 제대로 된 대학을 찾아 미국 전역을 돌아다녔다. '내 인생을 바꾸는 대학'의 (CTCL) 저자인 로렌 포프가 가치 있는 대학을 찾아 전국을 여행했던 것처럼. 이후 리버드 몰은 아이비리그 대학과 느낌이 비슷한 것으로 생각되는 8개의 주립대학을 선정했다. 이는 8개의 아이비리그 대학과 숫자를 맞추기 위해서였다. 몰이 퍼블릭 아이비를 선정하면서 고려한 요소는 학문의 우수성, 건물, 설립 연도, 전통, 특성 등이었다.
