오지 오스본 Ozzy Osbourne의 오디너리 맨 Ordinary Man을 들으면서 불현듯 살아오는 동안 스스로를 속이고 거짓말을 하고 있었음을 깨달았다. 누구보다도 평범하고 단순한 삶을 원한다고 생각했다. 레너드 스키너드 Lynyrd나 그래험 내쉬 Graham Nash의 심플맨 Simple Man 같은 노래들을 좋아한 것도 그런 이유라고 생각했다. 하지만 오지 오스본의 오디너리 맨은 나의 그런 허위와 기만을 송두리째 까발려 주었다. 다시 생각해보자. 그래, 나도 평범하지 않고 싶었던 건 아닐까. 당장 돈을 벌어 먹고 살아야만 했다는 절박함이었든 쉽게 용기내어 나서지 못했던 성격탓이든 아니면 게으름 때문이었든, 어떠한 이유로든 스스로에게 가스라이팅을 해 온 것은 아닐까. 삶은 평범하고 단순해야 한다고.
