야금모행(夜禁冒行) 재해석
한겨울밤의 외출
신윤복, <야금모행>, 조선 후기여덟 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <야금모행>입니다.
긴 사선 구도가 인상적인 이 작품은 그믐달이 뜬 서울의 한겨울 밤에 별감과 양반, 기생과 몸종아이가 어디론가 떠날 채비를 마치고 출발하려 하는 모습으로 보입니다. 한겨울의 당시 의복에 대한 정보를 주는 귀한 그림으로 양반은 체면도 마다하고 갓태를 숙여잡고 별감이 무언가 일러주는 것에 옅은 미소로 수긍하는 것으로 보입니다. 이 둘 사이에 무슨 대화가 오갔는지 궁금합니다. 기생과 함께 종종 등장하는 몸종은 아이의 크기이지만 몸의 비율은 어른의 몸을 그대로 사이즈만 축소해 놓은 듯 보입니다. 어린아이가 몸종이라면 머리가 큰 아이의 비율로 그리는 것이 맞겠지요... 중요하지 않은 사람들을 작게 그리는 옛 그림의 특징으로 성인인 하인을 중요도에 따라 아이의 사이즈로 그려놓은 것은 아닐까 조심스레 추측해 봅니다.
The eighth piece to introduce is 'Yageum Mohaeng.'
This impressive artwork features a long diagonal composition, depicting a scene on a cold winter night in Seoul with the full moon shining. It appears that a courtesan's guardian, a nobleman, a courtesan, and a child servant are preparing to depart for somewhere. The artwork provides valuable insights into the clothing of that winter period, with the nobleman maintaining his dignity, tipping his hat, and smiling faintly as the courtesan's guardian seems to give advice on something. I wonder what conversation passed between them. The child servant, who often appears with the courtesan, seems to be the size of a child, but the proportions of the body resemble that of an adult, almost as if an adult's body has been proportionally reduced in size. If the servant is a child, it would be more appropriate to draw with the proportions of a child with a larger head... Due to the characteristic of drawing less important figures smaller in old paintings, I cautiously speculate that the depiction of the adult servant in the size of a child might be attributed to this pattern.

재해석 그림의 배경은 코로나19 집단감염 우려가 촉발되던 2020년이 되었습니다. 이태원 클럽 '집단 감염'으로 한 번에 54명이 확진되며 밤의 유흥가가 서서히 활기를 잃어가기 시작했는데요... 그림에서는 밤의 유흥가에서 놀러 나온 남녀가 마스크를 쓰지 않고 거리를 배회하자 이 구역의 경찰이 마스크를 쓰라는 주의를 주고 있는 모습입니다. 지나가던 아이도 뒤돌아서서 이들에게 눈총을 주고 있습니다. 여자는 담뱃대 대신 사탕을 들었네요.
The backdrop of the painting is set in the year 2020 when concerns over COVID-19 mass infections were triggered. The Itaewon club 'cluster infection' led to 54 confirmed cases at once, causing the nightlife district to gradually lose its vibrancy. In the artwork, a man and a woman, having just come out for entertainment in the nightlife district, are wandering the streets without wearing masks. In response, a police officer in the area is cautioning them to wear masks. A passing child also turns around to cast a disapproving glance at them. Interestingly, the woman is holding a Chupa Chups instead of a cigarette.
오늘은 비가 오는 수능날입니다. 오래전 저의 기억으로는 시험을 마치고 나오며 홀가분함과 동시에 약간의 배고픔, 스쳐갔던 부모님의 얼굴, 채점의 압박에도 오늘 저녁은 모두 잊고 놀자 하는 여러 가지 감정들이 한꺼번에 밀려왔던 것으로 기억이 나는데요...ㅎㅎ 수험생분들 모두 수고하셨고 오늘 밤은 마스크 없이 홀가분하게 '야금모행' 하셔도 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

Today is the day of the Korea S.A.T, and it's raining. From my distant memories, I remember the mix of emotions as I came out of the test— a sense of relief, a slight hunger, the faces of my parents crossing my mind, and the pressure of the upcoming grading. Despite all that, I recall feeling the desire to forget everything and just enjoy the evening.
To all the students who took the exam, well done! Tonight, perhaps you can relax without a mask and indulge in a bit of "Yageum Mohaeng" after all the hard work.
