내 이름 My name

어제의 이름 외우기 게임을 하고 나서 내 이름에 대해서 좀 더 생각을 하게 되었다. 내 이름은 한국어와 영어로 둘 다 똑같다. Juno, 준오. 내 호주 친구들 중 몇몇은 이름이 두 개였다, 하나는 호주 이름, 다른 하나는 한국 이름. 엄마 아빠는 나에게 두 개의 다른 이름을 주고 싶어 하지 않았다. 그것보다는 두 나라에서 다 괜찮은 하나의 이름을 더 원했다. 그런데 호주 이름도 되고 한국 이름도 되는 이름이 별로 많이 없었다고 했다. 그런데 가까스로 마음에 드는 걸 하나 찾았는데 그건 바로, 준오 (Juno). '주노'가 아니고 '준오'다. 두 이름을 빨리 발음하면 소리가 같지만 다르게 적는다. 엄마는 '준오'가 '주노'보다 더 일반적인 한국 이름이라고 했다.
한국어로는 괜찮은 남자 이름 같지만 사실 영어로는 슬프게도 ‘남신'이 아닌 '여신’의 이름이다. 그리고 옛날에 나온 영화 ‘JUNO’(어떤 임신한 여자의 이름!)도 도움이 되지 않았다. 나는 그 영화를 본 적이 없지만 누가 그걸 공짜로 준다고 해도 보기를 거부한다! 다행히도, 1804년에 발견된 작은 행성의 이름이 JUNO라고 한다. 그해에 그걸 누가 발견했는지 진짜 고맙다. "정말 고마워, 그 행성을 발견한 누. 군. 가." 그리고 알래스카의 수도도 주노(Juneau)인데 물론 이건 스펠링은 좀 다르지만 소리는 같으니까 나는 그냥 그게 그거인 걸로 치기로 했다. 그러고 보니 그렇게 나쁘지는 않은 거 같다, 내 이름이.
'준오'가 엄마 때는 한국적인 이름이었는지 몰라도 요즘은 '주노'도 나쁘지 않을 것 같다. 한국 이름도 이젠 특이한 이름들이 많아졌다. 그리고 그 보고 싶지 않던 영화도, 이젠 찾아볼까 생각한다. 어쩌면 내가 몰랐던 내 이름의 유래가 더 나올지도 모르니까.... 하지만, 아직은 아니고. 조금 더 있다가. ㅎㅎ
Yesterday’s name memorizing game made me think about my name a bit today. My name is Juno, both in English and in Korean. Some of my Korean friends in Australia had two names, one Australian and one Korean. My parents said they didn’t want to give me two different names. They preferred one name that could sound ok in both countries. They said there were not many names that could be both Australian AND Korean. But, they managed to find one name they liked: Juno (준오). Many people spell my name differently in Korean (주노). It’s like saying Ju-No, instead of Jun-O. They both sound the same when I say it quickly, but written differently in Korean. My mum said Jun-O sounds more typical Korean than Ju-No.
It seems like a fine name for a boy in Korea, but unfortunately in English it happens to be a Goddess, not a God. The movie, JUNO (a GIRL who was pregnant!) didn’t help, either. I didn’t actually watch it and I still refuse to watch it even if someone gave me the movie for free! Luckily though, JUNO is also the name of a small planet that was discovered in 1804. I am so thankful to whoever found the planet in that year. “Thank You So much, Whoever-found-the-planet!” The capital of Alaska is ‘Juneau’, it’s spelt differently but it sounds the same as my name. So, it’s considered pretty much the same as my name. After all, it's not too bad, my name.
