외국인이 꼽은 한국여행지 BEST5

한국거주 7년차 캐나다인 Greg이 전하는 영어칼럼 두 번째.

  한국에 산지 벌써 7년차. 캐나다인의 시선으로 한국에서 경험하고 느낀 것들을 공유해주는 외국인 친구 Greg 이 전하는 영어칼럼을, 한/영 버전으로 함께 브런치에 공유합니다. 서울 지역을 제외한, 외국인들이 좋아하는 한국 여행지를 꼽아봤어요.

1. 전주 막걸리타운  (Jeonju, Makkeoli Town)

Jeonju is a town that is most famous for its traditional Korean village and for being the originator of bibimbap. But the place that I enjoyed most was Makkeoli Town, which is basically a few small streets that contain traditional Jeonju style Makkeoli restaurants and offer a variety of side dishes.

전주는 전통적인 한옥마을과, 비빔밥이 유래된 곳으로 유명해요. 하지만 저에게 가장 좋았던 곳은 막걸리 골목으로, 몇 개의 골목에 전주의 전통적인 스타일의 막걸리 식당들이  있고, 다양한 반찬들을 먹을 수 있는 
곳이에요 !

막걸리 타운의 음식들

The restaurant that I went to, gave us more than 20 side dishes and a full large kettle of Makeolli for about 25,000\ per person. All of the restaurants were very busy in this area, and ours had a bunch of writing and pictures all over the walls as well as many red faced Korean patrons.

제가 갔던 식당은, 20가지가 넘는 반찬들과 큰 주전자를 가득 채운 막거리를 한 사람당 25,000원에 먹을 수 있는 곳이었어요. 이 골목에 있는 모든 식당들에는 사람들이 정말 많았고, 제가 갔던 식당도 술에 취해 빨개진 얼굴을 가진 한국 손님들이 많은 숫자만큼이나, 많은 유명인들의 싸인이나 사진들을 벽에서 확인할 수 있었어요.

The side dishes themselves were quite strange to me and I was surprised at home many filled the table. Some of the dishes included, pigs feet, tiny crabs, and silk worm larvae, all of which were new to me. I was brave however and tried all of them! The makkeoli itself was also delicious, and since my girlfriend is not a big drinker, I needed to drink most of it. Safe to say, I was feeling very good afterwards!

식당의 반찬들은 저에게는 약간 이상했고, 상을 가득 채운 반찬들로 놀라게 되었어요. 반찬에는 족발, 미니 게 튀김, 번데기와 같은 저에겐 정말 새로운 음식들도 포함되어 있었어요. 저는 용감했기 때문에 모든 걸 먹어봤어요! 막걸리는 그 자체로도 정말 맛있었는데, 제 여자친구는 술을 잘 못하기 때문에, 제가 대부분을 마셔야만 했어요. 그 이후론 정말 기분이 좋았다고 믿어도 돼요!

2. 협재 해수욕장 - 제주도 (Hyeopjae Beach - Jeju Island)

Last year in March I made my long awaited first trip to Jeju Island. At the Jeju airport, I took everyone's advice and I rented a car to make sure I could cover as much ground as possible in my two day trip. 

작년 3월 저는 오랫동안 기다렸던 저의 첫 제주여행을 다녀왔어요. 제주 공항에서, 저는 이틀동안 가능한 많은 곳을 보기 위해서는 꼭 차가 필요하다는 모두의 충고를 따라서 차를 렌트했어요.

In my research for Jeju I saw a beach that looked nice and was not too far from Jeju airport, so I thought it would be a good first stop on my trip. The beach was named Hyeopjae and I was certainly not disappointed. The water was blue-ish green and it was as if I was on an Island in Thailand or the Philippines.

제주여행에 대해서 찾아볼 때, 저는 정말 멋지고 공항에서도 멀지 않은 바다를 보게 되었고, 저의 제주 여행에서 첫 번 째 장소로 좋을 것이라고 생각했어요! 협재 해수욕장이라는 곳이었고, 저는 정말로 실망하지 않았어요. 바닷물은 마치 태국이나 필리핀에 있는 섬과 같은 에메랄드 빛이었어요.

It also has a nice view of Biyang island in the background and a lovely statue of Haenyeo(Korean female divers). So if you find yourself in Jeju, make sure to take a trip to this beautiful and less busy beach.

비앙도를 배경으로 정말 멋진 풍경을 볼 수 있는데, 사랑스러운 해녀동상 (한국의 여성다이버)도 확인할 수 있어요. 제주도 여행을 간다면, 아름답지만 그렇게 많이 붐비지않는 협재 해수욕장으로의 여행을 꼭 잊지 마세요

3. 안동 하회마을 (Ahndong- Ha hahoe village)

Ahndong is a small city in Northern Gyeongsang province. Being from a small isolated city myself, it feels like my hometown version in Korea in a way. Ahndong of course is famous in Korea for Jjimdak which as I've mentioned in a previous post, like a steamed soy sauce chicken stew.

안동은 경상북도의 작은 도시에요. 저는 작은 고립된 시골 출신이기 때문에, 안동은 마치 저의 고향의 한국 버전 같았어요. 안동은 물론 한국의 찜달으로 유명해요. 찜닭은 이전 칼럼에서도 언급했지만, 간장으로 졸인 한국의 닭 요리에요.

One thing foreigners might not know however is that they also have a beautiful Hahoe village near the city. The village is located in the countryside and is along the Nakdong river. It is a replica of one that was owned by Ryu family, who were famous scholars from the Joseon dynasty period.

하지만 외국인들이 잘 모르는 사실은 바로, 안동에는 아름다운 하회마을이 있다는 거에요. 마을은 낙동강을 따라서 시골에 위치해 있어요. 마을은 조선시대에 유명한 학자였던 풍산 유씨 가문의 씨족마을이에요.

I was lucky enough to stay in one of the traditional houses. It was a great experience, and a good way to see what traditional life in Korea might have been like.

저는 전통 가옥 중에 하나에서 지낼 수 있어서 정말 운이 좋았어요. 정말 특별한 경험이었고, 또한 전통적인 한국의 삶이 어떠하였을지 확인할 수 있어서 좋았어요.

4. 송도 센트럴 파크 - 인천 (Songdo Central Park - Incheon)

Songdo is an interesting addition to this list, because although I fell like many Koreans know about it, few actually make the trip and visit. People from Seoul that I've talked to about it act like it's a 10 hour plane ride away, bu in reality, it's only about an hour and a half from anywhere in Seoul.

송도는 베스트로 꼽기에 흥미로운 곳인데, 많은 한국인들이 알고는 있지만 실제로 여행을 하거나 방문하는 경우는 적기 때문이에요. 서울에 사는 사람들과 송도 센트럴 파크에 대해서 이야기를 해보면, 그들은 마치 10시간 비행을 해야 도착할 것처럼 이야기를 해요. 하지만, 실제로 송도는서울 그 어느 곳에서나 한시간 반 밖에 걸리지 않아요.

I recently visited Songdo this most recent Children's day and I was amazed at how nice it was. It seemed as if I were in another very modern city like Dubai.

저는 가장 최근의 어린이날 송도에 갔었는데, 얼마나 멋진지 정말 놀랐어요. 송도에서 마치 제가 두바이와 같은 다른 현대적인 도시들에 와 있는 것 같은 느낌이 들었어요.

Central park was filled with tall, shiny business towers and hotels. Something I wouldn't have expected so far from Incheon and Seoul city centers. It was also very surprising to see very few cars on the road and not even many pedestrians, almost like a modern utopian ghost town. 

센트럴 파크는 크고 빛나는 회사 건물들과호텔들로 가득차 있었어요. 제가 여태까지 인천이나 서울 시내에 대해서 전혀 기대하지 않았던 것들이었어요. 또한 놀라웠던 것은 도로에서 차나 걸어다니는 사람들을 거의 볼 수 없던 것들이었는데, 마치 유토피아 유령도시 같았어요.

5. 춘천 (Chuncheon)

This one again might seem like an odd choice for this list, but it's another one of those places that is very close to the Seoul metropolitan area but not often visited by most Seoulites. In my opinion, people from Seoul love Nami Island, or Gapyeong, but making it to the last stop on the ITX is a bit of a rarity.

춘천 역시 여기 리스트에 넣기에 이상한 선택으로 보일 수도 있지만, 서울 대도시 지역에서 매우 가까운 곳임에도 서울 사람들이 자주 방문하지 않는 곳이에요. 제 생각에는, 서울 사람들은 남이섬이나 가평에 가는 건 좋아하지만, ITX의 마지막 역인 춘천에 가는 건 흔하지 않은 것 같아요. 

막국수 Makguksu

Chuncheon of course is famous for one of my favorite Korean foods : Dak galbi, and as I found out another dish that I really enjoyed : Makguksu (which is essentially a mix of Naemgmyeon and Soba noodles).

춘천은 역시 제가 좋아하는 한국 음식인 닭갈비로 유명하지만, 또한 제가 정말 좋아했던 다른 음식으로는
냉면과 소바면을 섞어서 만든 막국수가 있어요.

I didn't know what to expect before visiting the city but it turned out to be really quiet and peaceful and we found from a local Chuncheon resident to avoid the touristy Myeongdong dak galbi street and instead opt for a local chain located closer to the Gangwon NAtional University area.

저는 춘천에 방문하기 전에 춘천에 대해서 아무것도 알지 못했지만, 지역 주민들이 거주하는 지역을 돌아보며정말 조용하고 평화로운 곳이라는 걸 알게 되었어요. 명동 닭갈비 골목은 관광객들이 너무 많기 때문에, 그 대신 저는 강원국립대학교 근처에 위치한 현지식당에 갔어요.

It turned out to be great advice and we were not disappointed as it was likely one of the best meals I've ever had in Korea.

정말 좋은 선택이었고, 제가 한국에서 먹어본 것들 중에서 가장 맛있었던 음식들 중 하나였기 떄문에, 절대 실망스럽지 않았어요.
