한국거주 6년차 캐나다인이 전하는 한국 생활 이야기 첫 번째

1. 자기소개 Introduction
캐나다에서 온 Greg Bessette (앞) 과 그의 캐나다 친구들My name is Greg Bessette. Actually my full name is Gregory Anthony Raymond Bessette.
I am an English teacher from Canada and I have lived in Seoul 4 years and Korea for 5 years
(My first year I lived in Anyang).
I currently live in Nonhyeon-Dong and work in Gangnam at an academy that teaches adults.
In my free time, I like to play hockey (a very popular Canadian hobby),
as well as drinking with friends, trying new restaurants and travelling to many places
in Korea and abroad.
제 이름은 Greg Bessette 이에요. 전체 이름은 Gregory Anthony Raymond Bessette 이에요. 저는
캐나다에서 온 영어강사에요. 한국에서 5년 살았는데, 첫 1년은 안양에 살았고, 나머지 4년은 서울에 살고 있어요.지금은 논현동에 살고, 강남에 있는 성인 대상 영어학원에서 일해요. 자유시간에는 하키 하는 걸 좋아해요.
하키는 캐나다에서 정말 유명한 취미에요. 또한 친구들과 마시면서 놀기, 맛집 탐방하기, 한국 및 해외로 여행하는 걸 좋아해요.
2. 고향에 관한 이야기 Hometown
캐나다 Saskatchewan ProvinceAs I mentioned I'm from Canada, Canada is a very huge country with many different climates,
landscapes and weather. I am from a city called Saskatoon, which is in the province of Saskatchewan. Usually if people ask me "where are you from?" I tell them I'm from the "middle part" of Canada because my hometown area is not well known among Korean people
or anyone outside of Canada! Saskatchewan is in a part of Canada that is called the prairies.
The land is completely flat with almost no hills at all, mostly known for farming and resources such as oil and potash. Saskatoon is the largest city in the province and is about the same size as Wonju in terms of population. Also in the winter it gets very very cold.
It can get as low as -45 degrees celcius in the winter. However there are also 4 seasons like in Korea so it can get to about 35 degrees in the summer as well. If you want to visit it's only about a 16 hour drive from Vancouver or a 28 hour drive to Toronto!
앞에서 언급했던 것처럼, 저는 캐나다 사람이에요. 캐나다는 매우 큰 나라로, 기후도 다양하고, 풍경들도 다
다르고 날씨도 천차만별이에요. 저는 캐나다 Saskatchewan 주에 있는 도시 Saskatoon에서 왔어요.
주로 사람들이 "어디 출신이야?" 라고 물으면 저는 "캐나다 중부 출신" 이라고 말해요. 왜냐하면 제 고향은
한국 사람들이나 캐나다인을 제외한 다른 나라 사람들 모두가 잘 모르는 곳이거든요. Saskatchewan은
캐나다의 평지 중에 하나에요. 땅은 언덕이라곤 단 하나도 없는 완전한 평지이고, 농업 그리고 석유와 탄산 칼륨 같은 자원들로 유명해요. Saskatoon은 주에서 가장 큰 도시로, 인구로 따지자면 한국 강원도의 원주와 비슷해요. 또한 겨울에는 정말 정말 추워요. 겨울에는 영하 45도까지 내려갈 수 있어요. 하지만 한국에서처럼 4계절이 있는데, 여름에는 35도까지 올라가요. 만약 Saskatoon을 방문하고 싶다면, 밴쿠버에서는 16시간, 토론토에서는 단지 28시간 운전해서 가면 돼요!
3. 한국에 오게 된 이유 Why did you come to Korea ?
오로라를 볼 수 있는 그의 고향 캐나다 SaskatoonThe story of why I came to Korea is not very exciting, but it is a common reason why many foreigners come here to teach English. I came here for two reasons. I wanted to live in a foreign country and it was the best deal economically out of all the countries in Asia.
Korea offered housing, and flights paid by the company. Japan usually offers only one of the two, or sometimes non at all. Also the cost of living in Japan is higher. China was another option but China is a little bit more unstable and untrustworthy in terms of jobs and housing.
제가 한국에 오게 된 이야기는 그렇게 흥미롭진 않아요. 하지만 많은 외국인들이 영어를 가르치려고 한국에
오는 공통된 이유일 거에요. 저는 두 가지 이유로 한국에 왔어요. 외국에서 살고 싶었고, 아시아에 있는 모든
나라 중에서 경제적인 조건이 가장 좋았어요. 한국은 집세와 비행기 표까지 모두 회사에서 지급해줘요.
일본은 주로 두 가지 중 하나만 제공하거나, 가끔은 전혀 제공해주지 않을 때도 있어요. 또한 일본에서의 생활비는 훨씬 비싸요. 중국도 다른 조건 중 하나였는데, 중국은 직업이나 집을 가지는 데 있어서 조금 더 불안정하고 믿을 수 없었어요.
4. 한국에서 사는 게 좋은 이유
What do you like living in Korea ?

There are many things I like about living in Korea, and especially Seoul. I would say the best thing about it is the convenience. Public transportation is everywhere, convenience stores and restaurants and pubs are walking distance and often opened 24 hours and anything can be delivered at any time. Second, I love how easy it is to travel domestically and abroad.
Many countries are only a few hours flight from Korea. In Canada, the only places a few hours away are other Canadian cities and American ones. (And let's be honest, with Trump as president nobody wants to go there!) Lastly I really like Korea because it is a metropolis at a discount price. If you look at other countries around the world that are as developed as Korea and as big as Korea, they are usually much more expensive! The cost of living in Korea,
including price for food and housing is very reasonable considering all the factors!
And of course one more thing... the many many beautiful girls!
제가 한국에서 특히 서울에서 사는 게 좋은 많은 이유들이 있어요. 가장 좋은 점은 살기 편해서에요.
대중 교통은 어디에나 있고, 편의점, 식당 그리고 술집은 모두 걸어갈 수 있는 거리에 위치해 있어요.
그리고 종종 24시간 문을 열고, 언제 어디서나 배달을 시킬 수도 있어요.
두 번째로는, 국내에서나 해외로 나갈 때 쉽게 여행할 수 있다는 거에요. 많은 나라들은 한국에서 몇 시간만 비행하면 갈 수 있어요. 캐나다에서 몇 시간 비행한다고 하면 다른 캐나다 지역이나 미국 밖에 갈 수 없어요.
(하지만 사실, 트럼프가 대통령인 이상 아무도 미국에 가고 싶지 않을 거에요!)
마지막으로 저는 서울은 대도시이면서 그렇게 많이 비싸지 않다는 게 정말 좋아요. 다른 나라에서 한국만큼
크고 발전된 곳을 찾아본다면, 훨씬 더 비싸다는 걸 알 수 있어요! 한국 생활비는 식비와 집세를 포함해서
모든 요소를 따져봤을 때 모두 합리적이에요. 물론 다른 또 하나의 이유는, 예쁜 여자들이 정말 많이 있다는
거에요!
5. 바뀌었음 하는 한국문화
If you want to change one thing in Korea,
what would it be?
겨울에 흔히 볼 수 있는 Saskatoon의 모습As a foreigner I enjoy most of the benefits of Korea without many of the negative aspects.
I work less hours and get paid more money than Koreans who do the same jobs as I do
(basically the opposite of most economic immigrants). Therefore I understand I am privileged to live and work in Korea. I do however have experience working in Korea so I have witnessed working culture and the way hierarchy permeates all aspects of Korean culture.
If I could change something about Korea it would be related to the conservative/Confucian culture that Koreans follow. I think that too much hierarchy leads to inefficiency and confusion when there are a lot simpler solutions to problems. Also the inability of Korean workers to question their bosses or superiors makes their lives more difficult and stressful
than it needs to be.
외국인으로서 부정적인 것들보다는 한국의 모든 좋은 점들을 누리면서 살고 있어요. 같은 일을 하는 한국인들보다 더 적은 시간 일하고 더 많은 돈을 받아요. (이는 또한 다른 나라의 외국인노동자들의 경제적인 상황과
전혀 반대에요). 그래서 저는 한국에서 사는데 조금 더 혜택을 받고 있다는 것을 이해해요. 하지만 한국에서
일을 하며, 한국의 일하는 문화나 한국문화 전반에서 볼 수 있는 위계질서를 경험할 수 있었어요.
제가 한국문화를 바꿀 수 있다면, 저는 많은 한국인들이 따르는 보수적인 유교문화를 바꾸고 싶어요.
너무 많은 위계질서는 비능률적이고, 문제가 있는 유교사상들을 해결할 수 있는 간단한 방법들이 많이 있다고 생각해요. 또한 한국인 노동자들이 그들의 관리자나 사장님들께 이야기를 하거나 질문을 하는 것을 어렵게
만드는 문화는 그들의 삶을 더욱 힘들고 스트레스를 받게 만든다고 생각해요.
6. 한국에서 가장 기억에 남는 장소
Favorite place that you have traveled in Korea
한국에서 가장 인상적인 곳으로 꼽았던 경주
아름다운 경주의 모습Since I have lived in Korea for 5 years and my hobby is travelling, I have tried to visit as many places as possible during that time. I've been to most major cities and a lot of the tourist areas in the country. Busan is a big city with a beautiful beach, great food and thriving night life, and Jeju feels like you are in a totally different country on a tropical paradise!
Sokcho also combines a small town Korean atmosphere with nice beaches and a beautiful national park minutes away. Jeonju is a big city with a fun tourist area (Hanok village),
and also the best food and makeoli you will eat anywhere in the country! Those are 4 of my top 5 places to visit in Korea, but if I had to pick my number 1 place, I would have to choose Gyeongju. Gyeongju has a unique traditional atmosphere and history that I didn't feel anywhere else in Korea. The entire city feels like a historical artifact and even though
there were many school children taking tours when I went, it didn't feel overly touristy.
한국에서 5년째 살고 있고, 저의 취미가 여행인 점을 고려해보면, 저는 가능한 한 많은 장소들을 여행해왔어요.
저는 한국에서 많은 대도시들과 관광지들을 방문했어요. 부산은 아름다운 바다, 맛있는 음식, 번화한 밤 문화를 가지고 있는 큰 도시에요. 제주도는 마치 다른 열대 지방에 와 있는 것 같은 느낌이에요. 속초는 아름다운 바다와 국립공원이 몇 분 거리에 있는 한국의 작은 도시에요. 전주는 한옥마을과 같은 재미있는 관광지가 있는
대도시이면서, 한국에서 먹을 수 있는 최고의 음식들과 막걸리를 특별하게 맛볼 수도 있어요! 제가 한국에서
가장 좋아하는 곳 top5 중에서 위에 4곳을 꼽았어요. 그렇지만 제가 가장 좋아하는 곳은 바로 경주에요.
경주는 매우 독특하고 전통적인 곳으로, 한국의 다른 어떤 곳에서도 느낄 수 없는 역사를 느낄 수 있는 곳이에요. 모든 도시는 매우 역사적인 유물들을 가지고 있고, 그래서인지 제가 갔을 때 많은 학교에서 수학여행을 왔었어요. 저 혼자만 관광객인것처럼 느껴지지 않을 정도로요.
7. 가장 좋아하는 한국음식은?
What is your favorite Korean food?
When I first arrived in Korea I thought Korean food was very strange. Korean food had many unfamiliar vegetables, strange smells and even exotic seafood that I had never seen before and certainly didn't want to eat! But the longer I've lived here, the more I've come to appreciate Korean food, and the importance Korean food/meals in Korean culture.
My favorite Korean food these days is not so much one dish but more than harmony of many dishes that Koreans call Baek Ban. Korean food is good to me because it combines many different flavors and foods into 1 meal.
제가 처음에 한국에 왔을 때, 저는 한국 음식은 매우 이상하다고 생각했어요. 한국 음식은 저에게 익숙하지 않은 많은 야채들이 있었고, 이상한 냄새와 심지어 제가 그 전에 한 번도 보지 못했고 절대 먹어보고 싶지 않게 생긴
정말 이상한 해산물들이 많았어요! 하지만 제가 한국에서 쭉 살면서, 저는 더욱 한국음식을 좋아하게 되었고,
한국에서 음식문화의 중요성을 알게 되었어요. 제가 요즘에 좋아하는 한국 음식은 하나의 음식이 아니라
많은 음식들이 조화를 이루는 음식, 한국어로 백반이라고 불리는 것이에요. 백반은 많은 다양한 음식들과
맛을 한 번에 즐길 수 있어서 정말 좋아요!
8. 한국에 있으면서 꼭 해보고 싶은 것은?
What do you want to do in Korea later?
한국에서 매주 하고 있는 아이스하키
매주 일요일마다 CBHK에서 열리는 볼하키경기As I mentioned earlier, I like living in Korea. Compared to my hometown, Korea is a bustling metropolis and is convenient to do things all hours of the day. I don't plan to leave Korea
in the near future. I like my current job teaching adults and might continue to do it for a couple more years. That being said, I would also like to one day teach at a university or even become a professor. To do that I would need to get my master degree, or perhaps work in the Korean countryside. If not a professor I would also like to open my own business.
Perhaps a restaurant, bar or cafe. Other than work related things, I would also like to continue travelling around Korea. I'd love to rent a car drive around the entire peninsula one day!
제가 앞에서도 얘기했듯이, 저는 한국에서 사는 걸 좋아해요. 저의 고향과 비교해봤을 때, 한국은 복잡한 대도시이고 하루에 많은 다양한 것들을 할 수 있을 정도로 편리한 곳이에요. 저는 가까운 미래에 한국을 떠날 계획을 가지고 있지 않아요. 저는 지금 성인들을 가르치는 직업을 좋아하고 아마 몇 년 더 할 거에요. 그리고 언젠가는 대학교에서 가르치는 교수가 되고 싶어요. 그러기 위해서, 저는 석사학위가 필요할 것이고
아마 서울이 아닌 곳에서 일해야 할 지도 몰라요. 교수가 되지 않는다면, 저는 제 사업을 하고 싶어요.
아마 레스토랑, 바, 혹은 까페일거에요. 일과 관련되지 않은 것을 이야기해보자면, 저는 한국의 모든 곳을 계속 여행하고 싶어요. 언젠가는 차를 렌트해서 한국의 모든 곳을 모두 둘러 볼 거에요!
