1. Public Transportation 대중교통

Since I come from a part of Canada where public transportation is almost non-existent, I was and still am amazed by the scope and convenience of public transportation in this country. Whether it's the bus, subway or taxi, Korea is in my opinion, the best place in the world for these services. The subway is super clean, it's usually quiet and is accessible from almost anywhere in Seoul or Gyeonggido. Not to mention it's warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

저는 대중교통이라고는 전혀 찾아 볼 수 없는 지역의 캐나다 출신이기 때문에, 여전히 한국의 대중교통으로 어디든지 편리하게 갈 수 있다는 사실에 놀라곤 해요. 제 생각엔, 버스, 지하철, 택시를 고려해보았을 때, 세계에서 가장 최고의 대중교통 시스템을 가지고 있다고 생각해요. 지하철은 정말 깨끗하고, 보통 조용하며, 서울이나 경기도의 그 어느 지역이든지 갈 수 있어요. 겨울에는 따뜻하고, 여름에는 시원하다는 건 말할 필요도 없어요.

Even more ubiquitous than subway stations, is the bus system which is also amazing, there are so many buses going in every direction at all times. This is the best way to go as close to your home as possible and in some areas they even have bus lanes so they don't have to wait it traffic.

버스는 지하철보다 더 많은 지역에 갈 수 있는데, 이 또한 놀라워요. 같은 방향으로 가는 버스를 동시에 확인할 수 있어요. 집으로 가는데 가장 가깝게 갈 수 있는 최고의 방법이고, 심지어 버스전용도로가 있어서 교통체증으로 기다릴 필요도 없어요.

Taxis in Korea

Lastly, taxis also can be found in any urban or suburban area at any time of day. The best part is how cheap they are. Compared to Japan, North America or Europe, taxis in Korea are very cheap so you can stay out as long as you want! Another good thing about all three of these methods is that there are a variety of reliable applications that tell you exactly when and where they will arrive, as well as transit cards you can use to insure timeliness and convenience!

마지막으로, 택시는 모든 도시나 시골 지역에서 언제 어느 때나 찾아볼 수 있어요. 가장 좋은 부분은 바로 가격이 정말 싸다는 거에요. 일본, 북미, 유럽 지역과 비교해 보았을 때, 한국의 택시들은 정말 싸기 때문에, 당신이 원하는 만큼 밤늦게까지 놀 수가 있어요! 이외에도 또 좋은 건 바로, 믿을 만한 대중교통 앱을 통해서 확인해 볼 수 있다는 거에요. 정확히 언제 어디에 시간 맞춰 도착할지를 알 수 있어 편리해요.

2. Korean food (한국음식)

Before coming to Korea I had tried Korean food a total of 0 times in my life. So really I wasn't sure what to expect. To be honest the first few months there weren't many things I liked very much. I thought kimchi was disgusting, BBQ was boring, fried chicken was the same, and cold noodles were insane.

 한국에 오기 전에, 저는 제 인생에서 한국음식이란 단 한번도 먹어본 적이 없었어요. 그래서 저는 무엇을 기대해야 할지 사실 몰랐어요. 솔직히 말해서, 처음 한국에 와서 몇 달 간은 제가 좋아하는 한식은 많지 않았어요. 저는 그 때, 김치는 역겹고, 고기는 그냥 지루하고, 치킨도 그저 똑같고 냉면은 말도 안되는 음식이라고 생각했어요.

Then as time went on, and the fact that I lived in Uiwang, I was forced to eat Korean food almost every day. From then on I started to love it. Not only was it generally quite healthy, it was also by far the cheapest option available.

시간이 지나면서, 저는 의왕시에 살았기 때문에, 거의 매일 한국음식을 먹을 수 밖에 없는 상황이었어요. 그때부터, 저는 한국음식을 정말 좋아하게 되었어요. 한국음식이 대체로 건강에 좋은 음식이라는 것도 그렇고, 가장 싼 가격에 먹을 수 있는 음식들이라는 점들 때문이었어요.

These days I crave Korean food and eat it almost every day. My favorite type is traditional style meal, or "baek ban". I never knew how good Korean food could be until I tried this. It combines so many different flavors and types of food, which somehow all taste great together. I also really love naengmyeon in the summer time and sambap, which is meat/lettuce wraps and other fillings together. So in other words, I realized Korean food is not about the individual dishes, it's about how all of the food, side dishes, and various sauces work together to make an amazing overall eating experience!

요즘 저는 한식이 엄청 땡기고, 거의 매일 한식을 먹다시피 해요. 제가 좋아하는 전통스타일의 한식은 "백반"이에요. 백반을 먹어보기 전까지는, 한식이 이렇게 맛있을 거라는 생각은 해본 적이 없어요. 백반은 다양한 맛과 다양한 음식들이 합쳐져 나오는 형태인데, 모든 맛들이 함께 어우러져서 정말 최고의 맛을 내요. 여름에는 냉면을 정말 좋아하고, 밥과 상추, 다른 것들도 함께 싸 먹는 쌈밥도 좋아해요. 한마디로, 한국 음식은 그 자체로 즐길 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 모든 반찬과 소스들이 함꼐 어우러져서 전체적으로 최고의 맛을 낸다는 것을 알 수 있을 거에요!

3. Drinking/Going out (음주가무)

Korea is a very densely populated country and therefore live in quite small accommodations. Korea is also a country where people usually live with their families. For these reasons Koreans have many bars and restaurants everywhere, and there are a lot of busy areas all over Seoul that are constantly busy because people don't like staying at home. There are a couple reasons why drinking in Korea is so good.

한국은 인구가 밀집된 나라로 꽤 작은 집에 대부분 살고 있어요. 한국에서는 사람들이 주로 가족들과 함께 살아요. 이런 이유들 때문에 한국에서는 많은 호프집이나 레스토랑들을 어디에서나 찾아볼 수 있어요. 그리고 서울에는 붐비는 지역들이 많은데, 사람들이 집에 있기를 싫어하기 때문이에요. 한국에서 음주가무가 좋은 이유들이 몇 가지 있어요.

First, it is accessible. In Korea, you can buy alcohol anywhere, drink alcohol anywhere and even find bars and restaurants that serve alcohol on basically every street. In Canada, we can only buy alcohol at special government stores that close early at night. Second, you don't need to drive to get anywhere. Taxis are plentiful and many pubs and bars are in walking distance of people's homes. 

첫 번째로, 가깝다는 점이에요. 한국에서는 어디에서나 술을 살 수 있고, 어디에서나 마실 수 있어요. 모든 거리에서 술을 파는 호프집이나 식당을 쉽게 발견할 수 있어요. 캐나다에서는, 특별한 정부 기관 가게에서만 술을 살 수 있는데, 가게는 일찍 문을 닫아요. 두 번째로, 운전해서 갈 필요가 없다는 거에요. 택시는 정말 많고, 사람들의 집에서 걸어서 가도 될만큼 술집들은 가까이에 있어요.

Third, it is very cheap to drink and get drunk if you drink Korean alcohol. A bottle of soju is only 3-4000won in a restaurant and even cheaper at a sotre, which means you won't spend too much money at the end of the night. In Canada, a night out with dinner or drinks and taxi can easily cost $100-200, whereas in Korea a night can easily be under $50 if you don't spend frivolously.

세 번째로, 한국 술을 마신다면 많은 돈을 내지 않고도, 술에 취해 놀 수 있다는 거에요. 소주 1병은 식당에서는 3-4천원이지만, 가게에서는 더 싸게 살 수도 있어요. 그래서 밤에 놀면서 돈을 많이 쓰지 않을 수 있어요. 캐나다에서는 나가서 저녁을 사먹거나 술을 마시고 택시를 타려면, 한 번 노는데 10만원에서 20만원 정도 들거에요. 한국에서는 밤에 음주가무를 즐기는 데 5만원 아래로 돈이 들게 늘 수 있으니까, 돈을 마구 쓸 필요가 없어요.

4. Travelling domestically and abroad (한국 국내 여행 혹은 한국에서 떠나는 해외 여행)

One of the reasons I originally came to Korea was to travel. Korea itself is a small country but it has surprisingly a lot to see. IT has cities, mountains, beaches and historical sites all within a few hours by bus or train, and the transportation itself is very easy to access from almost anywhere, as well as reasonably cheap. Since I'm from a very isolated place in Canada, it is almost impossible to travel domestically or abroad at a reasonable price. I'm forced to fly to other majou cities first before I can leave the country and even to fly to Toronto or Vancouver can cost $300-500.

제가 한국에 온 이유들 중 하나는 한국을 여행하기 위해서에요. 한국은 작은 나라이지만 놀랍게도 많은 볼 것들이 있어요. 도시들, 산들, 바다들, 그리고 역사적인 장소들이 버스나 기차, 지하철을 타고 몇 시간 안에 갈 수 있어요. 그리고 대중교통으로 거의 모든 곳에 갈 수 있고, 또한 가격도 정말 싸요. 저는 캐나다에 고립된 지역 출신이기 때문에, 착한 가격에 캐나다 국내 여행을 한다거나 해외 여행을 한다는 건 거의 불가능해요. 그래서 제가 여행을 하려면 대도시로 먼저 비행기를 타고 가야만 해요. 또한 토론토나 벤쿠버에 
비행기를 타고 가는 것도 30만원에서 50만원 정도 들어요. 

Travelling abroad is also made easy in Korea because there are two international airports not far away from Seoul, and even one of the best in the world (Incheon). This combined with the fact that there are many world class Asian destination under 5 hours flying distance from Seoul, makes travelling abroad a delight. Lastly, there are several low cost airlines that fly in and out of Seoul on a daily basis, so travelling to other countries can be relatively cheap as well!

한국에서 해외여행을 가는 건 정말 쉬운데, 서울에서 멀지 않은 곳에 두 개의 국제공항이 있기 때문이에요. 인천 공항은 세계에서 최고의 공항들 중 하나로 뽑히는 곳이에요. 이뿐 아니라, 서울에서 다른 아시아 지역으로의 여행은 모두 5시간 이내로 갈 수 있기 떄문에, 기쁘게 여행할 수 있어요. 마지막으로 서울로 들어오거나 서울에서 다른 나라를 갈 때, 몇몇의 저가항공들을 이용할 수 있다는 거에요. 그래서 해외 여행 가격이 상대적으로 쌀 수 밖에 없어요. 

5. Expat community  (이방인 커뮤니티)

Having lived in Korea for several years now, I have seen many friends come and go. Most teachers stay for one or two years then travel around and head back to their home countries. It's one of the best and worst things about living in Korea. It's good because it's so easy to meet new people who are in the same situation as you. They are generally young, and looking to travel, have fun and meet new people. There are also many social communities and clubs that are for and run by expatriates in Korea.

한국에서 몇 년동안 살면서, 저는 많은 친구들이 한국에 오고 다시 고국으로 돌아가는 것을 많이 봤어요. 대부분의 강사들은 1~2년 정도 한국에 있다가 다른 아시아 국가들을 여행하고, 고국으로 돌아가는 경우가 많아요. 그래서 이건 한국에 살면서 좋기도 하고 나쁘기도 한 것 중에 하나에요. 왜냐하면 한국에 오는 당신의 상황과 같은 사람들을 새롭게 만날 수 있기 때문이에요. 그들은 대체적으로 어리고, 여행하는 걸 기대하며, 재미있게 놀며 새로운 사람들을 만나기를 좋아해요. 또한 한국에는 이방인들을 위한, 그리고 이방인들이 운영하는 많은 커뮤니티나 모임들이 있어요. 

CBHK, 2017 Spring Season

The one that I am most involved in and know most about is the hockey community. Especially a hockey league called the CBHK, which stands for: Canadian Ball Hockey Korea. This league is a group of 120 or so Canadians, Americans and Koreans and it is played every spring and fall at Jamsil sports complex. It has been a great way for me to meet friends and play the sport I really enjoy.

제가 가장 많이 참여하고 잘 아는 단체는 바로 하키 커뮤니티에요. 특히 하키리그는 CBHK라고 불리우는데, Canadian Ball Hockey Korea(캐나다인 볼 하키 한국)의 약자에요. 이 커뮤니티에는 120명이 소속되어 있고, 캐나다인, 미국인, 그리고 한국인들이 함꼐 경기를 하며 매번 봄과 가을 시즌에 잠실 종합운동장에서 경기를 해요. 저에겐 이 커뮤니티가 친구들을 만나고 제가 정말 좋아하는 스포츠 경기를 할 수 있는 기회가 되었어요.
