Why All Koreans Should Travel More

Last year, I went on an 8 month solo backpacking trip. It was the most unique, interesting, and educational experience of my entire life. I traveled to 9 countries in total. I made countless friends from all over the world. I experienced things I will never forget. I learned a lot about the world, but I learned even more about myself.

작년에, 저는 8개월동안 혼자 베낭여행을 했어요. 그건 제 인생에서 가장 독특하고, 흥미롭고 교육적인 경험이었어요. 저는 모두 9개 나라를 여행했어요. 저는 전 세계에서 셀 수 없는 친구들을 만나고, 절대 잊지 못할 경험들을 했어요. 저는 세계에 대해서 많이 배웠고, 무엇보다도 저 자신에 대해서 더욱 배우게 되었어요.


Upon returning to my everyday life, I found myself not being able to contain my excitement when talking to everyone about my experiences. I wanted to encourage everyone to travel more. Before my trip, I had lived in Korea for 2 years. I am now returning to Korea for my 3rd year. I feel Koreans specifically would benefit greatly from traveling abroad more. One of my main criticisms of Korean culture is that it is too focused on work and education. There is not enough time away from work and school. I specifically want to encourage all Koreans to travel more. Here's why...

 제 일상으로 돌아와서, 제 경험에 대해서 모든 이들에게 말할 때 저의 흥분된 감정을 참을 수가 없는 제 자신을 발견하게 되었어요. 저는 모든 사람들에게 더욱 여행을 하라고 권장하고 싶어요. 여행을 하기 전에, 저는 한국에서 2년동안 살았어요. 지금 저는 한국에 다시 돌아와서 한국에서의 3년차가 되었어요. 저는 한국인들은 분명히 다른 나라를 여행하는 데 더욱 좋은 혜택을 가지고 있다고 생각해요. 제가 한국문화에 대해서 비판하고 싶은 한 가지는, 바로 한국인들은 일과 교육에만 너무나도 집중하고 있다는 거에요. 일과 학교를 벗어난 충분한 시간이 많이 없어요. 그런 이유로 저는 특별히 한국사람들에게 더욱 여행을 많이 하라고 권장하고 싶어요.

1. 엄청난 것들을 직접 보고 직접 해보기

The main reason I love to travel is to experience things I wouldn't be able to otherwise. The world is filled with amazing sites to see, things to do, and people to meet. The list is endless. I've seen the Taj Mahal. I've been in a water fight with thousands of Thai people. I've been paragliding in the Himalayas. I've eaten tarantulas in Cambodia. I've swam with whale sharks in the Philippines. These are only some of the many experiences I've had while traveling that I will never forget. And I know there are many more that are waiting for me.


제가 여행하는 걸 정말 좋아하는 이유는, 제가 여행하지 않았으면 할 수 없던 것들을 경험할 수 있다는 거에요. 세계는 놀라운 볼 것들, 할 것들, 만날 사람들로 가득차 있어요. 그 목록은 끝이 없어요. 저는 타지마할을 봤어요. 저는 수천명의 태국 사람들과 물싸움을 했어요. 저는 히말라야에서 패러글라이딩을 했어요. 저는 캄보디아에서 타란튤라(독거미의 일종)을 먹었어요. 저는 필리핀에서 고래상어와 수영을 했어요. 이것들은 제가 여행하면서 절대 잊지 못할 수많은 경험들 중에서 일부분일 뿐이에요. 그리고 저는 아직도 많은 것들이 저를 기다리고 있다는 걸 알아요.

Traveling allows us to learn all kinds of new things. It is much more educational than a high school or university course. This is first hand experience. Immersing yourself in a new culture allows you to experience everything the locals do. I learned how to make spring rolls in Vietnam. I learned the brutal history of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. I learned that 4 religions peacefully coexist on one street in Malaysia. I learned how to count in Chinese. I learned how to play criquet in India. The possibilities for learning are endless.

여행은 우리가 새로운 종류의 것들을 배울 수 있도록 해줘요. 그건 고등교육이나 대학교육보다도 훨씬 더 교육적이에요. 이건 직접적인 경험이에요. 새로운 문화에 자신을 내던지는 건 그 지역 사람들이 하는 모든 것들을 경험할 수 있도록 해줘요. 저는 베트남에서 스프링 롤 만드는 법을 배웠어요. 저는 캄보디아에서 크메르 르주의 잔인한 역사에 대해서 배웠어요. 저는 말레이시아에서 하나의 거리 위에 4개의 종교가 평화롭게 공존하는 것에 대해서 배웠어요. 저는 중국어로 어떻게 숫자를 세는지 배웠고, 인도에서 크리켓을 하는 법을 배웠어요. 배움의 가능성은 끝이 없어요.

3. 새로운 친구 사귀기 You make new friends

Meeting new people at home can be difficult. People will think you are weird if you just try to strike up a conversation with them on the bus or subway. While you are traveling, it is much easier. If you stay in a hostel, everyone is looking to make friends. I would just strike up a conversation in the common room. Locals were always introducing themselves to me as well. They wanted to meet foreigners and show them around their country. I haven't been to a country that didn't have welcoming people. Meeting people from all over the world is an amazing experience.

새로운 친구들을 고향에서 사귀는 건 어려울 수 있어요. 버스나 지하철에서 대화를 시작하려고 한다면, 사람들은 당신을 이상하게 생각할 거에요. 여행중에는, 이것들은 훨씬 쉬워져요. 호스텔에서 머문다면, 모든 사람들은 새로운 친구들을 만나기를 바라고 있을 거에요. 저는 휴게실에서 그냥 대화를 시작했어요. 지역주민들은 항상 자신들에 대해서 소개해줬어요. 지역주민들은 외국인들을 만나서 자신들의 나라를 보여주는 걸 좋아했어요. 저는 여행자들을 반기지 않는 그 어떤 나라도 만나보지 못했어요. 전세계 곳곳에서 사람들을 만나는 건 정말 놀라운 경험이에요.

4. 새로운 관점 갖기 Gain a new perspective

Travelling allows you to see the world from new perspectives. It helps you realize that there is more than one way to live life. You will be amazed at how different another person's life can be compared to your own. It is amazing to see where people live, what people eat, what people believe, what people do for work, where people go to school, how people get around, and what people do in their leisure time. Traveling will allow you to gain fresh new idea about life.

여행은 새로운 관점으로 세상을 볼 수 있도록 해줘요. 하나의 방법으로 인생을 사는 것보다 더 많은 것들을 깨닫게 해줘요. 다른 사람들의 인생을 자신의 인생과 비교해보았을 때 얼마나 다른지에 대해서 깜짝 놀라게 될 거에요. 사람들이 어디에 살고, 무엇을 먹고, 무엇을 믿고, 어떻게 일하고, 어디로 학교를 가고, 어떻게 사람들과 어울리고, 여가 시간에 무엇을 하는지 알게 되는 건 정말 놀라운 일이에요. 여행은 삶에 대해서 정말 새로운 생각들을 할 수 있도록 해줘요

5. 깊은 감사 Appreciation

Growing up in the United States, I knew I was lucky. But until I started traveling to third world countries, I didn't know how lucky. I now consider myself one of the luckiest 1% of people on the planet. After visiting countries like India, Nepal, Cambodia and the Philippines, I realize how amazing it is to live in a first world country. Clean water, an abundance of food, paved roads and sidewalks, a quality education, access to healthcare, and simply the ability to travel at all are all things that I used to take for granted. These are not things that are guaranteed in all countries around the world. Traveling to these places shows you how lucky you really are to be able to live in a modern developed country. It will give you a new appreciation for daily life when you return home.

미국에서 자라는 것은 행운이라는 것은 알고 있었어요. 하지만 제가 제 3세계 국가들로 여행을 시작하기 전까지는, 저는 얼마나 운이 좋은 것인지 알지 못했어요. 이제 저는 지구상의 운이 좋은 1%의 사람으로 여기고 있어요. 인도, 네팔, 캄보디아, 필리핀과 같은 나라들을 방문하고 난 후에, 저는 제1세계(부유한 선진국들)에 사는 게 얼마나 놀라운 일인지를 알게 되었어요. 깨끗한 물, 풍부한 식량, 포장된 도로와 인도, 질이 좋은 교육, 건강보험, 여행을 하고 싶으면 단순히 떠날 수 있다는 것 등 모든 것들을 저는 당연한 것으로 여겼어요. 하지만 전세계에 모든 나라에서 이 모든 것들은 당연하게 보장되지 않았어요. 이런 곳으로 여행을 하면서, 저는 제가 얼마나 운이 좋고, 현대화된 선진국에 사는 것이 얼마나 행운인지를 알게 해 주었어요. 이것들은 당신의 일상에서 새롭게 감사할 수 있도록 해줄 거에요.

6. 도전정신 Challenge yourself

Traveling is not always easy. There are always little things that don't go according to plan or are harder than you would have liked. Something as simple as booking a bus ticket in a foreign land can be an adventure. I've been stuck in airports because my flight was cancelled. I've ordered random dishes just by pointing at a Chinese menu that I didn't understand at all. I've gotten food poisoning in Myanmar. Traveling is going to be difficult at times. All these little headaches are more than worth all the amazing experiences I have had. Challenging times like these help you grow and become a more seasoned traveler. You get better with experience, just like anything else. Most of the time something unexpected happens, I end up with an interesting or funny story to tell anyway.

여행하는 것은 항상 쉽지만은 않아요. 항상 계획하지 않았던 어떤 일이 발생하거나, 당신이 좋아하는 것보다 훨씬 힘든 일들이 생겨요. 버스 티켓을 예매하는 것처럼 간단한 것도 외국에서 한다면 도전이 될 수 있어요. 저는 결항이 되어서 공항에 갇혀있어야만 했어요. 저는 전혀 이해할 수 없는 중국어 메뉴판에서, 단지 무작위로 손으로 찝어서 주문을 했어요. 저는 미얀마에서 식중독에 걸렸어요. 여행하는 것은 때로는 어려울 수 있어요. 이러한 작은 두통들은 제가 경험했던 놀라운 경험들보다도 훨씬 더 가치 있었어요. 도전정신은 당신이 더 성장하게 해주고, 더 노련한 여행자가 되게 해줘요. 다른 것과 마찬가지로, 여행으로 더 나아질 수 있어요. 대부분 계획하지 않은 일들이 발생하면, 어쨌든 나중에 재미있게 말할 수 있는 에피소드로 남게 되었어요.

Thee are just some of the many reasons I encourage everyone to travel more. I realize I am very fortunate to be able to have traveled as much as I have. Everyone's circumstance are different. Depending on your individual situation, traveling for the first time can be overwhelming. I plan to write several articles in the future to help anyone that is interested in starting a life of adventure.

이것들은 제가 더욱 여행하라고 권장하는 많은 이유들 중에 몇 가지에요. 저느 제가 갈 수 있는 최대한 많이 여행을 할 수 있어서 정말 행운이었다는 걸 알게 되었어요. 모든 사람들의 상황은 달라요. 각자의 상황에 따라서, 처음 여행하는 건 당황스러울 수도 있어요. 저는 추후에 몇몇 글들로 인생에서의 모험을 시작하는데 흥미가 있는 사람들을 모두 도울 계획을 가지고 있어요.
