* 쉬라 와 쉬라즈의 클론은 어떻게 다를까?

캐나다에 Okanagan 지역의 탑 와인 생산자 Painted Rock's syrah 와인을 마셨는데 갑자기 클론은 도대체 어떤걸 써야 프랑스 론 스타일의 우아한 쉬라 스타일 와인이 나오는걸까 라는 생각에 메일을 와이너리 관계자에게 쓰게 되었습니다.

그들은 쉬라의 포도품종 중에서 floral 스타일 클론(99)과 pepper 스타일의 클론(100)을 프랑스로 부터 공수해온다고 합니다. 보르도 스타일의 다양한 포도를 블랜딩해서 맛을 창조한다는 사실은 알고 있었지만, 같은 품종의 여러가지의 클론들을 사용해서 개성 있는 스타일의 와인을 만든다는 그 사실이 매우 흥미로웠습니다.

Hello Parker,

Thank you for your email and for your interest in Painted Rock’s Syrah.

Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape varietal, just called by different names in different regions.

We have two clones of Syrah planted in our estate vineyard, clones 99 and 100. All of our vinifer comes from France.

One clone is a feminine, floral clone and the other is a peppery, spicy clone. We essentially blend wines together from the two clones to get the desired balance.

All of our wines are aged in French oak barrels. The Syrah is the only wine we make that is aged in a combination of French and American oak.

Alain Sutre is our Bordeaux consultant. He comes to the vineyard 6 times per year and blends all of our wines.
