구글 홈 1주일 써보니.

구글 뮤직 스트리밍만으로도 대 만족, 콩글리시도 대략 잘 알아듣네.         

블랙 프라이데이에 할인 가격으로 질렀다. 아직 한국은 지원이 안 된다고 하지만 방법이 있다. 어차피 음악 듣는 용도로 쓸 계획이었는데 구글 뮤직은 VPN으로 우회하면 가입할 수 있고 한 번만 가입하면 스트리밍 음악을 무제한 들을 수 있다.

설정은 아주 간단하다. 그냥 전원을 꽂고 와이파이 연결된 상태에서 스마트폰으로 구글 계정만 지정해 주면 끝이다. 음원 소스나(구글 뮤직이 디폴트고 유튜브 뮤직이나 스포티파이, 판도라 등) 뉴스도(NPR이 디폴트고 폭스와 블룸버그, BBC 등이 지원된다) 고를 수 있고 지역은 자동으로 잡는 것 같고 섭씨와 화씨 단위 설정도 할 수 있다.

구글 홈을 들여놓아야겠다고 생각했던 가장 큰 이유는 첫째, 스트리밍 방식으로 맞춤 음악을 무제한 들을 수 있는 서비스가 구글 뮤직 밖에 없기 때문이었다. 둘째, 애플 뮤직의 라디오가 공짜였던 시절이 있었으나 유료로 전환됐다. 셋째, 과거 라스트에프엠만한 취향을 골라주는 스트리밍 서비스가 아쉬웠다.

구글 뮤직을 들을 수 있다는 것만으로도 구글 홈을 구입해야 할 이유는 충분했다.

한국어 지원이 안 되지만 두 가지만 말할 줄 알면 된다.

“OK, Google.” 이게 구글 홈 기본 명령어고,
“Play Music.” 이건 음악을 틀라는 거다.

구글 뮤직에 가입할 때 좋아하는 취향을 입력해 놓기 때문에 그냥 적당히 내가 좋아할 것 같은 음악을 골라서 계속 틀어준다. 내가 원하는 게 바로 이런 서비스였는데 게다가 공짜다. 애플 뮤직을 끊으면 그것만으로도 몇 달만에 본전을 뽑을 수 있다.

“Volume Down”이나 “Volume UP”, 또는 “Volume level five” 같은 명령어로 볼륨을 조절할 수 있고 음악이 맘에 안 들면 “Next”로 넘길 수 있다. 음악을 듣다가 “What is name of this music?”이라고 물으면 곡명과 연주자, 녹음연도 등을 알려준다. 콩글리시지만 대략 알아듣는다.

구글 홈이 하루종일 귀를 쫑긋 세우고 언제 나를 부르나 하고 대기하고 있다고 보면 된다.  (도청 장치로 변질하거나 개인정보를 수집하지 않는다는 기본적인 신뢰가 있어야 한다.) 말 중간에 나지막하게 “OK, Google.”해도 금방 알아 듣고 명령 대기상태가 된다. 꽤나 멀리서 말해도 반응한다.

물론 다른 것도 된다. “Good Morning”이라고 말하면 날씨와 뉴스를 읽어준다. 기본은 NPR 뉴스인데 다른 뉴스로 설정할 수도 있다. 한국 뉴스는 아직 서비스가 안 되지만 영어 공부하기에도 좋을 듯.

아래와 같은 명령어들이 가능하다고 한다. 대충 엉터리 발음을 해도 알아 듣는다. 알람을 맞출 수도 있고 시간을 물어보거나 생일 축하 노래를 해달라고 할 수도 있다. 지루하다고 말하면 농담을 해준다. 짐바브웨의 대통령이 누구냐, 원숭이를 프랑스어로 뭐라고 하느냐, 뮤지컬 레미제라블의 타이틀 곡 제목이 뭐냐 등의 검색형 질문을 던질 수도 있다. 스마트 전구나 스위치 등을 켜거나 끄거나 할 수도 있는데 이건 설치하기가 굉장히 성가실 것 같다. 네스트를 이용한 실내 온도 조절 등도 그냥 그림의 떡.

아마존 에코나 SK텔레콤 누구도 고민했으나 일단 음악 지원이 우선이라 생각했고 누구의 우리말 인식과 멜론 지원은 솔깃했으나 발음이 너무 닭살스러워서(너무 귀여운 척 안 했으면 좋았을 텐데) 견디기 어려울 것 같아 패스. 게다가 멜론은 클래식 라인업이 약하다. 피자 배달 등도 편리하긴 할 것 같으나 실수로 주문하게 될 가능성이 더 걱정스러워 역시 패스. 일정 안내 등도 온 가족이 공유하는 디바이스로 쓰기에는 약간 애매할 듯. 적당히 영어로 명령어를 받고 어느 정도 거리감을 두는 게 좋겠다는 판단 끝에 구글 홈을 선택했다.

구글 홈은 소프트웨어는 구글 어시스턴트, 하드웨어는 구글 크롬캐스트+스피커라고 생각하면 된다. 혹시 내 영어 발음을 제대로 알아들을 수 있을까, 명령어 인식 정도가 궁금하면 Allo라는 앱을 깔아보면 테스트 해볼 수 있다.

음질은 쏘쏘. 20만원 미만의 블루투스 스피커와 비교하면 무난한 정도다. 의외로 괜찮네 정도의 느낌이었는데, 음악을 들으려면 외부 스피커와 연결이 되면 더 좋겠다 싶다. 이게 원래 크롬캐스트와 연동을 감안해서 만들어진 거라(이번에 크롬캐스트가 구글 홈으로 통합됐다) 외부 스피커를 쓰려면 크롬캐스트 오디오를 통해야 할 것 같은데 (구글 홈이 크롬캐스트 기반이라) 뭔가 중복에 낭비라는 생각도 들고.

Smart home

Google works with only a few smart home devices/platforms at present: Philips Hue, Nest, SmartThings, Chromecast and IFTTT. The roster of integrations will likely expand as time goes on. Even with these limited integrations, though, the flexibility of SmartThings and especially IFTTT allow the Google Home to control a wide variety of gadgets using 3rd-party triggers. For now, here are the built-in Google Home commands for smart home gadgets.

    Turn Philips Hue lights on/off: "OK Google, turn on/off my lights."
    Dim Hue lights: "OK Google, dim my lights to fifty percent."
    Change Hue colors: "OK Google, turn my lights [color]."
    Control Nest thermostat: "OK Google, turn the temperature to [temp]."
    Make incremental changes: "OK Google, raise the temperature 1 degree."
