EP.03 - 저수지의 화려한 변신

저수지의 화려한 변신

천안 업성저수지는 오랫동안 농지에 용수를 공급하던 시설이었으나 천안시의 지원 아래 생태공원으로 변신 중이다. 이 소식을 들은 많은 자본들이 저수지 주변으로 모여들며 앞다투어 건물을 올린다. 비즈니스의 관점상 새로운 개발 지역에서 선점은 매우 중요하기 때문에 본능에 가깝게 움직인다. 하지만 디자인 관점상, 디자이너에게 기회가 주어진다면 저수지가 생태공원으로 변신한 원래의 취지를 잊어서는 안 된다. 생태공원, 자연의 모습을 최대한 유지하며 인공적인 부분을 최소화하여 조성한 공원, 즉 사람과 자연이 공존하는 곳을 만들기 위해 노력해야 한다.

다시 프로젝트로 돌아와 나에게 건물을 디자인할 기회가 왔다. 이미 현지 건축가 및 시공사에 의해 철골 골조가 완성된 상태로 입면을 수정하고 카페 공간을 디자인할 수 있는 기회가 주어졌다. 나는 어떠한 메시지를 전달할 수 있을까? 건물 주변의 건물을 살펴보니, 도심에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 벽돌과 철재 건물들이 주를 이루고 있었다. 저수지 및 자연생태와는 거리가 느껴졌다. 앞서 서두에서 이야기한 사람과 자연의 공존을 이야기하고 싶어졌다.

Transformation of a reservoir. Cheonan Eopsung reservoir was a facility supplying water for agricultural land for a long time, but it is transforming into an ecological park with the support of Cheonan-si since 2016. This new development starts hitting people up for the money and building up in haste. In the view of business, preoccupancy in the competitive market is so important that there is no reason to wait and hesitate. But from a design perspective, designers should keep sticking to the original intent of this development and design to make a better place. Ecological park, securing the natural environment to the greatest possible limit and minimizing the artificial facilities, is the place coexisting of both human beings and nature.
Back to a project, I got a chance to design this store. On site, the steel framework was done already by a local architect and contractor so I took a facade design and cafe interior work. I asked myself several times 'what type of design should be suitable on this site?' When I was looking around the site, there were lots of building composed of bricks and metals. It was a scene easily found in most cities and standing away from ecological parks even from the reservoir. And this condition encourages me to bring out the coexisting story of humans and nature.

모두를 위한 둥지

저수지에 오래 살던 새를 이 프로젝트의 페로소나로 설정했다. 이 새는 생태공원 주변을 날아다니며 일어나고 있는 변화들을 목격하고 있다. 갑자기 등장하는 새로운 인공물과 사람들을 바로보며 낯설음을 느끼고 이전의 저수지를 그리워 하게 된다. 이 페로소나에게 낯설지 않은 친근함이 담긴 건물을 보여주고 싶었다. 새의 둥지를 닮은 건물은 어떨까? 태어나면서부터 가장 친근한 공간이 바로 둥지는 아닐까? 둥지로부터 받은 영감을 건축적 요소로 풀어나가며, 하늘을 나는 새에게 우리 또한 노력하고 있음을 전달하고 싶다.

The nest. I set up a bird as a perosona which is living this reservoir for a long time. This bird was flying around looking down the development of the ecological park and feeling unfamiliar and homesick. How we can deliver more familiar place to this perosona? What about the nest-looking building? The nest should be familiar place to them because they were born and raised in there. Design motif inspired from the nest would be the good way to get along with them and hope this message can be delivered.

나무 위에 올린 나뭇가지

새가 나무 위에 둥지를 만들때, 구조적으로 두 가지 중요한 요소가 고려된다. 우선, 둥지가 놓일 안정적인 나무의 가지를 찾아야 하며, 이 후에는 그 위에 안정적으로 작은 가지들을 쌓아야 한다. 구조를 안정적으로 받쳐주는 나무의 가지는 건물의 입면에 형상화하고, 둥지를 실체적으로 구성하는 촘촘한 작은 가지들은 카페 내부 디자인에 형상화하기로 했다. 재료는 나무와 땅을 연상시키는 패턴 및 마감을 선정하여 친숙함과 따뜻함을 전달하길 의도했다. 도시에 면하는 건물의 입면은 어두운 배경색을 통해 대비효과를 만들며 가지의 수직성 강조하고 생태공원을 향하는 건물의 입면은 내부에서 통창을 통해 경관의 가시성을 확보하는 한편 외부의 가지 구조를 볼수 있는 재미를 더했다. 내부는 바 카운터 상부와 2층으로 연결하는 계단 및 복도 부분을 작은 나무 가지가 쌓인 모습을 형상화 시켜 이야기를 완성하였다.

Wood bracing and stacking. When a bird is building the nest, there are two criteria; one is finding stable tree branches and another is stacking sticks carefully on the top of tree branches. These two criteria is representing the overall design, outdoor and indoor space. Tree branches are presented on the building facade and stacked sticks are configured in the cafe area. Materials are brought up from wood and earth in tone and texture, and they are enhancing familiarity and warmness. The wood bracing facade along the road has a dark grey background tone in order to create contrast and highlight wood branches. And another facade to the lake was composed of wood bracings and full-height windows, it ensure to create an open view to the lake and also an interesting moment by looking at the bracing structure from indoor seating. Last but not least, the ceilings of coffe bar and 2nd floor corridor were designed with stacking woods to make a dramatic moment when approaching the bar and 2nd floor.
