프로레슬링 칼럼 ⑧ - 그보다는 편지
WWE 슈퍼스타들께 한국에서 보냅니다.
기본적으로 레슬링은 상대와 겨뤄 승부를 내는 데 그 목적이 있습니다. 넘치는 힘, 화려한 기술, 비상한 두뇌… 어느 쪽으로 발달되었든 모든 레슬러는 자신의 재능을 이용해 상대를 꺾어야 합니다. 그게 레슬링이고 또한 대립의 이유입니다. 그 과정에서 우리는 수많은 기적을 경험했습니다. WrestleMania, Summerslam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble. 그리고 굉장히 오랜 시간에 걸친 에피소드를 자랑하는 Monday Night Raw나 Friday Night Smackdown까지… 그렇게 셀 수 없는 기적을 보고서도 그 경험을 이어가기 위해 저를 포함한 많은 팬들은 아직도 WWE를 시청하나 봅니다.
그러나 한편으로는 WWE 안에서 벌어지는 기적만을 보기 위해 시청하는 것은 아닙니다. WWE라는 울타리 바깥에서 나타나는 기적을 보기 위함도 있습니다. 모두가 부정하지 않는 사실 하나는, WWE가 지상 최대의 쇼라는 점입니다. 위대한 엔터테인먼트 산업이죠. 하지만 만일 ‘쇼’ 혹은 ‘엔터테인먼트’라는 단어에 집중한다면 절대 이 같은 찬사를 들을 수 없습니다. 다만 팬들이 저 단어들보다 더 깊이 집중하는 것은 WWE 슈퍼스타들의 노력과 링 위에서 흘리는 땀입니다. 그것들이 진짜인 것을 알기 때문에 환호하는 것입니다.
그런데, 그보다 더 놀라운 것이 뭔지 아십니까? 여러분들의 노력을 보고 많은 환우들이 병마와 힘 있게 싸워 나가고 있고, 또한 그걸 넘어 이겨내고 있다는 점입니다. 그리고 동시에 그 놀라운 현장을 세계 곳곳에 전파하고 있다는 것 또한 WWE 외부에서 일어나는 기적입니다.
여러분들이 하고 있는 일은 단순히 자신의 근육과 힘을 자랑하거나 몇 번의 스플래시. 몇 번의 해머링을 연신 퍼붓는 퍼포먼스가 아닙니다. 여러분의 헌신이 누군가에게는 병을 이기는 힘이 될 수 있고, 혹은 꼭 병을 가진 자가 아니더라도 실의에 빠진 이를 구할 수 있는 행동이 될 수 있습니다.
홀 오브 페이머 Connor Michalek, 최연소 WWE 슈퍼스타 Elijah "Drax Shadow" Mainville, 강직한 7살 소녀 Kiara Grindrod 등 이들을 비롯해 수많은 사람들이 여러분의 노력을 보고 영감을 얻어 포기하지 않는 것입니다.
앞으로 이런 일은 계속되어야 합니다. 세상에 얼마나 강한 사람들이 많은지 알려져야 합니다. 그리고 그들을 통해 ‘WWE 슈퍼스타’라는 이름이 얼마나 자랑스러운 것인지 증명되어야 하며 우리 모두는 계속해서 전진해야 합니다.
Make A Wish, Connor's Cure와 같은 단체와 함께해 주셔서 고맙습니다. 그리고 바라는 것은 오래된 WWE 역사만큼이나 지금과 같은 선행이 오래도록 지속되기를 바랍니다. 그럴 것을 믿고 기쁜 마음으로 편지를 맺습니다.

We must still go forward
To WWE superstars from South Korea.
Basically, the goal of the professional wrestling is to decide victory or defeat by competing their opponents. All wrestler defeat their opponents by utilizing their own abilities like powerful strength, high-flying techniques, or extraordinary brain. That is the wrestling and the reason for the fight. In the process, we experienced a lot of miracles. WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and historic weekly TV show Monday night RAW, and Friday night Smackdown. After watching those amazing miracles, WWE fans around a world including me still watching WWE to continue these experiences.
Meanwhile, it is not the only thing to see the miracles inside of the WWE. There is more reasons to see miracles outside of the WWE. Everybody agree that WWE is the biggest entertainment show in the world. The greatest entertainment industry. However, if WWE only focused on the “show” or the “entertainment”, they couldn’t hear those praises. The thing that WWE fans more focus on is the efforts of the WWE superstars and sweats of the WWE superstars in the ring. They cheer because they know these are real.
Do you know more surprising thing? Many patients are trying to battle diseases by watching your efforts, and they even overcome their diseases. It is the miracle that happens outside of the WWE that they propagate these amazing scenes to all around the worlds.
What you are doing is not just boasting of your strength and performing some splashes or some hammerings. Your devotions can become the power to overcome their disease, or rescue for someone who feels discouragement.
Including hall of famer Connor Michalek, The youngest WWE superstar Elijah “Drax Shadow” Mainville, upstanding 7 years old girl Kiara Grindrod, tremendous people never give up by getting inspired and watching your efforts.
It must go on. It must become generally known how many strong people are in the world. Also, it must be proved how the name “WWE superstar” is proud of, and we must still go forward.
We are absolutely grateful for WWE because of sharing with charities like Make a Wish and Connor’s Cure. The only thing that we wish is that continuing these virtues as long as historic WWE history. We are closing a letter happily believing you do so.
