우리 동네 영어반 수업에서 다루는 주제가 늘 새로워 기대된다. 시사성 있는 뉴스를 다루기도 하고, 다른 언어가 품는 문화의 차이로도 이따금 경이롭기까지 하다. 마침 뉴욕시장 뽑는 일이 빅뉴스였다. 영어선생님의 예고대로 조란 맘다니 뉴욕시장 당선자의 연설이 수업교재가 되었다. 그의 스피치는 짤막짤막하면서도 강렬하다. 목소리도 청아하다. 듣고 있으면 청중의 환호에 묻힐만했다. 물론 논란의 여지가 많은 정치인이요 정치실험이 될 것이다. 일부 부자들은 이미 마이애미로 옮겨가 그곳 부동산이 폭등하여 마이애미시장은 표정관리를 해야 할 정도라고도 하던가?
십수 년 전 오바마의 연설문이 영문 스터디의 대상이 되었던 기억도 떠올랐다. 띄엄띄엄 의미의 맥락으로만 이해하는 영어 리스닝인데도 그의 승리 연설은 이미 승리를 넘어섰다. 취임도 하기 전에 작지 않은 혁명이 들불처럼 번질 것 같은 느낌이다. 영어 선생님은 아마 교과서에 실릴지도 모르겠다며, 영어 표현을 소개하며 연신 추켜세웠다. 33세 예수님 나이의 연설이 노인 학생들의 심장까지 쿵쿵 울리며 고스란히 전염되었다.

또래들로부터 듣고 배운 언어들은 깜짝깜짝 놀라게 한다. "지구에서 던져버리고 싶은 영어수업"이라는 표현도 걱정인데, 네가 그렇게 가기 싫어하는 줄 엄마 아빠가 알면 섭섭하지 않을까? 하고 반응을 보는데, 녀석이 "엄마 아빠에게 말해도 괜찮아"라며 단호하게 말하는데 또 놀랐다. 호불호가 뚜렷한 이 여자아이를 어찌 설득시켜 영어에 흥미를 느끼게 하나 고민되었다. 할아버지도 영어와 친해지려고 공부한다는 설명을 하느라 급한 대로 조란 맘다니의 비디오영상을 보여주었다. 검은 턱수염 맘다니는 트럼프와는 대척점에 있는 사람일 거라는 예감이 들었을까? 손녀는 트럼프를 잘 안다는 듯이 나에게 공감을 표시하였다. 어린아이가 트럼프를? 느낌으로 전달되는 TV에서 어린이라고 그냥 지나치는 것이 아닌가 싶었다. 어색할 때는 그저 "Thank you, 친구"만 해도 돼. 맘다니의 스피치 분위기만이라도 전해주려 애쓴 아침 등원길이었다. 다행히도 그날 저녁 들은 바로, 영어반이 "쪼끔 재미있었다"라고 했단다.
아~... 아이를 교육시킨다는 일이 무서울 정도로 어려워진다. 성탄 대림절에 뜬금없어 보이지만 톨스토이가 말년에 저술한 <사람은 무엇으로 사는가>를 다시 읽으며, 그의 고뇌와 침잠이 공감이 되었다. 나이 들어 철들면 인생을 회의적으로 보게 되는 것 같다. 그래도 손녀는 맘다니의 스피치 서두에 나오는 "Thank you, my friends"는 "고마워 친구?" 하며 알아듣고 반응해 주었고, 감격한 할아버지는 '프렌즈는 친구들'이라며 영어의 단수와 복수를 슬쩍 알려주었다.
