내가 쓴 '혼자 화난 래퍼들'이 지난 주말 영어로 번역돼 발행됐는데, 어느 페이스북 외국인 그룹에 그 글이 공유된 걸 발견했다. 아마도 재한 외국인 그룹인 것 같은데, 많은 사람이 댓글을 쓰며 의견을 냈다. 그중엔 미국 흑인들이 다수였다. 그들은 특수한 인종적 정체성이 강한 힙합이란 장르 문화의 당사자적 자리에 있다. 한국에 관한 견문도 있으면서 장르 문화와 특별한 관계에 있는 이들이 힙합과 한국 힙합을 어떻게 생각하는지 들어보는 건 의미 있는 기회일 것 같다. 그중 가장 많은 추천을 얻은 댓글 하나를 번역해 옮겨 놓는다.

"한국인들 뿐 아니라 많은 미국인들이 훌륭한 힙합은 자신의 삶의 경험과 생각에서 비롯한다는 걸 몰라. 꼭 터프할 필요도, 게토적일 필요도, 흔히들 'black'이라고 생각하는 어떤 관념일 필요도 없어. 만약 한 래퍼가 교외에 살고 있는 괴짜 백인이라면, 그 역시 괴짜스러움과 백인에 관한 힙합을 만들 수 있어. 보다 중요한 건 자신의 작사 기술에 전념하는 거지. 젠장, 내가 좋아하는 래퍼 중엔 MF 둠과 쿨 케이스, 우탱 클랜이 있어. 게토에 관한 랩을 하는 건 우탱 하나지만 만화책과 쿵후 영화의 렌즈를 통해 그걸 한다고. 한국 힙합은 어떤 모습과 형식에서도 진정성이 없어. 만약 한국인들이 삶의 고난에 관해 랩 하고 싶다면 얼마든지 많은 걸 묘사할 수 있어. 박정희 독재 치하에서 자란 경험과 광주 항쟁과 민주화 운동, 과거 공장에서 일하던 사람들의 삶(산업화 시대를 말하는 듯), 군 입대, 북한, 성매매, '헬조선', 이민 같은 무엇에 관해서든 랩 할 수 있다고. 너무나 많아. 하지만 그들 자신과 한국인의 경험을 진정성 있게 표현하는 대신, 한국 래퍼들은 검은색 코스튬을 걸쳐 입지. 이게 내가 조금도 그들을 진지하게 생각할 수 없는 이유야."

"What Koreans, even a lot of Americans, fail to get is that good hiphop must come from your lived-in experience and thoughts. It does not have to be tough, ghetto, or some idea that people think of as “black”. If a rapper happens to be a nerdy, white guy from the suburbs, then he can still make hiphop about nerdy, white stuff. What is more important is ones dedication to their lyrical craft. Shit, some of my favorite rappers are MF Doom, Kool Keith, and Wu Tang; only one raps about ghetto life but does so through the lens of comics and kung-fu movies. Korean hiphop simply has no authenticity in any way shape or form. If Koreans wanted to rap about hardship, they sure have a lot they could draw from: they could rap about anything from growing up in Park Chang Hee’s dictatorship, Gwangju and the democracy movement, the lives of people working in factories back in the day, being in the army, North Korea, sex trade, “Hell Joseon”, being an immigrant; there is so much. But instead of authentically expressing themselves and the Korean experience, Korean rappers just wear blackness as a costume. It is because of this that I just can not take it seriously ever."
