영주권 그게 뭐라고 이리 긴장되나요

이제 영주권의 마지막 단계를 지났다.

3월 중순에 영주권 진행을 위한 신체검사 결과(I-693)가 없다는 pink letter를 받고 부랴부랴 신체검사를 받으러 갔다. 피 몇 통 뽑고 소변검사하고 Tdap(10년 내에 맞은 기록 있으면 통과)과 플루백신(3월까지 플루시즌이라 안 맞은 사람은 반드시 맞아야 한다고 하네요)을 맞고, 일주일 뒤 병원에 다시 가서 밀봉상태의 I-693을 의사로부터 받았다.

그리고 3월 말에 interview notice letter(REQUEST FOR APPLICANT TO APPEAR FOR INITIAL INTERVIEW)를 받았다. 인터뷰 날짜는 아주 중대한 사유가 아니면 바꿀 수 없고, 적시한 것들을 인터뷰에 들고 나타나지 않으면 영주권이 거절될 수 있다고 굵은 글씨로 적혀 있었다.

인터뷰 지참 목록은 다음과 같다.

This Interview Notice and your Government issued photo identification.

A completed medical examination (Form I-693) and vaccination supplement in a sealed envelope (unless already submitted within the last year).

If required, confirmation of Bona Fide Job Offer or Request for Job Portability (Supplement J) (unless already submitted).

All documentation establishing your eligibility for Lawful Permanent Resident status.

Any immigration-related documentation ever issued to you, including any Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and any Authorization for Advance Parole (Form I-512).

All travel documents used to enter the United States, including Passports, Advance Parole documents (I-512) and I-94s (Arrival/Departure Docurnent).

Your Birth Certificate.

If you have children, bring a Birth Certificate for each of your children.

If your eligibility is based on your marriage to the principal beneficiary of a petition, in addition to your spouse coming to the interview with you, bring:

    - A certified copy of your Marriage Document issued by the appropriate civil authority;

    - If either you or your spouse were ever married before, all divorce decrees/death certificates for each prior marriage/formner spouse;

    - Birth Certificates for all children of this marriage, and custody papers for your children and for your spouse's children not living with you;

    - Supporting evidence of your relationship, such as copies of any docunrntation regarding joint assets or liabilities you and your spouse may have together. This may include; tax returns, bank statements, insurance documents (car, life, health), property documents (car, house, etc.), rental agreements, utility bills, credit cards, contracts, leases, photos, correspondence and/or any other documents you feel may substantiate your relationship.

Original and copy of each supporting document that you submitted with your application. Otherwise, we may keep your originals for our records.

If you have ever been arrested, bring the related Police Repon and the original or certified Final Court Disposition for each arrest, even if the charges have been dismissed or expunged. If no court record is available, bring a letter from the court with jurisdiction indicating this.

A certified English translation for each foreign language document. The translator must certify that s/he is fluent in both languages, and that the translation in its entirety is complete and accurate.

In addition to the above, if you are applying based on an Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker (Form I-140) that was filed by a relative who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident or by a for-profit entity where 5% or more of the ownership interest is held by a relative or lawful permanent resident, bring completed Affidavit(s) of Support (Form I-864) with all required evidence for each of your sponsors (unless already submitted). One sponsor must be the relative who petitioned for you. The required evidence includes:

    - Your sponsor(s)' Federal Income Tax returns and W-2s, or certified IRS printouts, for the most recent tax year;

    - Letters from each of your sponsor(s)' curent employer(s), verifying current rate of pay and average weekly hours, and pay stubs for the past 2 months;

    - Evidence of your sponsor's and/or co-sponsor's United States Citizenship or Lawful Permenent Resident status.
 

우리가 가져간 것들은 다음과 같다.

- 각자의 Interview Notice와 워싱턴주운전면허증

- 각자의 여권 (과거 여권 포함)

- 각자의 EAD카드 (AP는 H비자 소지자에게는 의미가 없어 우리는 받지 못했음)

- 각자의 I-94 (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home 여기서 출력)

- 각자의 기본증명서 및 가족관계증명서 번역공증원본&사본 (18년 2월 스캔해서 제출하고 원본이 남아 있어서 새로 증명서를 떼지는 않고 그냥 들고 갔음)

- 혼인관계증명서 번역공증사본 (16년에 H비자 신청할 때 준비했던 서류 스캔해둔 게 있어 뽑아서 갔음)

- 자녀 출생증명서

- 남편의 Job Offer Letter

- 남편의 3년 치 W-2와 최근 4개월 pay stub

- 남편의 졸업증명서, 이전 직장 경력증명서(영문)

- H1B 연장 Approval Notice

1년 지난 증명서를 가져가도 되는지, AP카드 받은 거 없는데 어떻게 해야 하는지 등에 대해 담당 변호사에게 문의했으나 아무런 답변을 받을 수 없어서 구글 검색 및 지인 경험담을 통해 준비했다. 그래서 나는 계속 검색을 하며 모르는 정보가 나오면 남편에게 공유하고, 자꾸 정보를 던지는 내가 본인을 더 불안하게 한다며 남편은 툴툴거리고, 그렇게 인터뷰 전야가 지나갔다.

아이에게 오늘 어떤 사람을 만나러 갈 건데 중요한 이야기를 할 거니까 그때만 조용히 있어 달라고 몇 번 부탁을 했다. 차에 태우니 낮잠도 딱 맞게 자 주어 순조롭게 인터뷰에 임할 수 있을 것 같았다. 인터뷰 시간은 12시 45분이었고 30분 이상 일찍 오지 말라고 쓰여 있어서 15분에 들어갔다. 공항 검색대처럼 신발까지 벗고 입구를 지나, interview notice letter를 직원에게 보여주면 이렇게 생긴 번호표를 준다.

번호표를 받았습지요

아이가 "안녕"하고 인사했더니 "안녕하세요" 대답이 돌아왔다. 오! 한국분이 일하고 계셨다. 2층으로 올라가서 대기하고 번호 부르면 따라 들어가면 된다고 친절하게 한국어로 설명해 주셨다. 45분이 되자 2개의 문에서 면접관이 나와 번호를 부르고 사람들이 들어가기 시작했는데, 모두 들어가고 두 팀이 남은 상황에서 우리 번호가 불렸다. 1시 25분에. 번호는 식별자일 뿐 순서가 아니다.

면접관을 따라 방으로 들어가서 인사를 나누고 오른손을 들고 진실만을 말하겠다고 선서(영화처럼 Yes, I do)하고 자리에 앉았다. 여권과 운전면허증 및 EAD를 꺼내놓고 아이에게 과자를 좀 줘도 되겠냐고 양해를 구했다. 면접관이 인터뷰에 참석했다는 서명을 하라고 해서 각자 서명하고 인터뷰가 시작됐다.

이름, 생일, 출생지, 현거주지, 현거주지 거주기간, 배우자 이름 및 생일, 결혼기념일, 아이 이름 및 생일, 아이 출생지, 미국 최초 입국일, 미국 최근 입국일 등을 우리 각자에게 동일하게 물으면서 면접관이 서류에 확인 표시를 했다. 이때 미국 최근 입국일이 면접관이 갖고 있던 I-94와 달라서 우리가 준비해 간 서류를 제출했다. 그리고 한국은 결혼기념일과 혼인관계증명서의 날짜가 다르다고 하니 면접관이 자신이 갖고 있던 서류에서 확인하고 넘어갔다.

그 외 남편에겐 업무에 대한 질문이 있었고, 나에겐 생뚱맞게 남편과 어떻게 만났는지를 물어봤다. 결혼 영주권도 아닌데 왜 묻나 싶었지만 대충 말했더니 찰떡같이 알아듣고 넘어갔다.

그러고 나서 우리가 미국에 해 끼치지 않고 살 인간들인지 확인하는 질문이 있었다. 아주 오오오오래. 아이가 이때부터 나가자고 보채기 시작해서 진땀이 났다. 대부분 No라고 대답할 내용이지만 군대를 다녀온 남자들은 몇 가지 답변할 것들이 있다. 이를테면 무기를 다뤄본 적이 있고 얼마나 다뤘는지 등에 대해서 말이다.

모든 질문이 끝나고 면접관이 물어볼 거 있냐고 해서 전화번호가 변경되었다고 말했고, 면접관은 요구하지 않았지만(제출하지 않으면 영주권 못 받는 건 우리니까요) I-693을 제출했다. 인터뷰하면서 변경된 항목들이 몇 개인지 다시 알려주고 그 부분에 대해 우리의 서명을 받았다. 그리고 120일 이내에 인터뷰 결과가 통보될 거라는 Notice of Interview results를 받아왔다.

면접관을 따라 다시 대기장소로 나와 시계를 보니 2시. 그제야 허기가 몰려왔다.

우리는 2017년 4월에 영주권 절차를 밟기 시작해서 18년 2월에 I-485와 I-140을 접수했고, 같은 해 4월 30일에 핑거프린트, 6월에 EAD카드와 나의 SSN을 받았다. 올해 초 H1B 및 EAD 연장 신청을 해서 H1B 연장은 승인받은 상태이고, 19년 4월 30일에 인터뷰를 했다. 영주권 주면 좋고 안 주면 22년까지만 일하고 안녕하자, 가볍게 마음(만) 먹고 인터뷰 다녀온 후기를 마쳐볼까 한다.

... 이 날은 우리 결혼기념일이기도 하다. 챙기지 않은지 오래됐지만. 선물로 영주권 카드 빠르게 보내주신다면 감사히 받겠어요.

+ 5월 4일에 카드가 곧 발송될 거라는 우편물을 받았고, 8일에 그린카드가 왔습니다. 선물 주셨네요.
