마이크로소프트, 틱톡 인수 협상 9월 15일까지 마무리
마이크로소프트는 지난 2일(현지 시간) 중국 소셜미디어 앱 틱톡과의 인수 협의를 진행했으며 9월 15일까지 협상을 마무리할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
만약 해당 인수가 성사된다면 마이크로소프트는 최근 워싱턴에서 벌어지고 있는 논란을 해결함과 동시에 소비자 기술에서 힘을 얻을 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
CNBC에 따르면, 두 회사는 미국을 비롯해 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드에서의 틱톡 운영권을 인수하기 위한 협상을 진행했다. 마이크로소프트는 공식 성명을 통해 최고경영자(CEO)인 사티아 나델라가 이와 관련해 트럼프 대통령과 대화를 했으며, 다른 미국 투자자들과 공동 인수를 논할 수도 있다고 전했다. 구체적인 인수 조건은 공개하지 않았다.
마이크로소프트는 “틱톡의 새로운 운영 구조는 세계적인 보안, 프라이버시, 디지털 안전 보호 기능을 추가하면서 틱톡 사용자들이 현재 이용하는 경험을 바탕으로 구축될 것”이라고 말했다.
트럼프 대통령은 인수 건에 대한 협상 기한으로 45일을 통보했다. 마이크로소프트는 미국 틱톡 사용자에 대한 데이터를 모두 미국으로 이전할 것이며, 다른 곳에 저장된 데이터는 이전 후 모두 삭제할 것이라고 말했다. 틱톡의 대변인은 지난 2일(현지시간) CNBC를 통해 미국 틱톡 사용자에 대한 모든 데이터가 미국에 저장되어 있다고 밝혔다.
한편, 마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관은 폭스뉴스를 통해 틱톡과 또 다른 중국 인기 앱인 위챗이 “중국 공산당에 직접 데이터를 공급하고 있다”라고 말한 바 있다. 앞서 CNBC는 미국 외국인투자심의위원회(CFIUS)가 바이트댄스에 손을 내민 것은 틱톡의 뮤지컬리(Musical.ly) 인수가 국가 안보 리스크를 내포하고 있다는 우려 때문이라고 보도하기도 했다.
Microsoft on Sunday confirmed that it has held talks with Chinese technology company ByteDance to acquire its trendy social app TikTok in the U.S. Microsoft said in a statement that it will keep working with the U.S. government on a deal and that it intends to conclude talks by September 15.
If it were to complete the deal, Microsoft could simultaneously resolve a recent controversy in Washington and gain power in consumer technology.
The two companies have looked at Microsoft buying TikTok in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Microsoft might offer other American investors to get involved in the acquisition, Microsoft said, adding that its CEO, Satya Nadella, has spoken with Trump. The company did not disclose deal terms.
“This new structure would build on the experience TikTok users currently love, while adding world-class security, privacy, and digital safety protections,” Microsoft said.
Trump agreed to give ByteDance 45 days to cut a deal with Microsoft over TikTok, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. Microsoft said it would make sure that data on TikTok users in the U.S. would be located in the country and that data stored elsewhere would be deleted after it has been moved. A TikTok spokesperson told CNBC on Sunday that data on TikTok users in the U.S. is stored in the U.S.
Earlier on Sunday U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Fox News that TikTok and another popular Chinese app, Tencent’s WeChat, are “feeding data directly to the Chinese Communist Party.” CNBC reported earlier that CFIUS had reached out to ByteDance because of concerns that the company’s Musical.ly acquisition posed a national security risk.
