who am I?

일년에 두번. 나는 나를 소개하는 시간이 있다.

첫째로, the first day of school.

개학 첫날, 나는 아이들에게 내 소개를 한다.

이 시간은 단순히 아이들에게 나를 소개하는 시간이 아닌, 아이들을 끌어당겨야하는 가장 중요한 시간이다.

특수교육 수학교사로, 나에게 오는 아이들은 수학에 약하다.

이미 수학을 좋아하지 않는 아이들 마음 속에

나는 너희들에게 재미있게 가르쳐줄거야. 그리고, 우리는 1년동안 함께 즐겁게 공부할거야라는 것을 온 몸으로 느끼게 해야하는 시간이 바로 이 첫날 내 소개시간.

나의 이미지가 결정되는 순간이다.

둘째로, Back To School Night.

개학하고 학생들이 학교에 적응할만 한 3주정도후,

저녁 6시. 학교 전체 행사로 모든 학부모님들은 자신의 아이들의 시간표를 따라 학급을 방문한다.

이시간은 학부모들과 교사들의 만남의 시간으로, 교사들은 자신을 소개하고, 커리큘럼을 설명하면서 일년동안 어떻게 클래스가 운영될지를 간단히 설명한다.

그리고, 이 두 시간을 제외하곤,

나에게 나를 소개하는 시간은 그리 많지 않다.

그런 오늘….스피치 모임 첫시간으로, 자기소개 발표 숙제가 내려졌다.

마지막으로 직장 인터뷰로 내 소개를 한게 10년이 훌쩍 넘었으니, 나를 소개하는 이 시간이 부담스럽기만하다.

게다가, 단순히 목적이 있는 자기소개가 아닌, 내가 누구인지, 나만의 색을 표현하고 싶었기에 고민하고 또 고민하면서 준비한 자기소개를 공개해본다.

Who am I?

In order to prepare this speech, I started thinking about myself. Who am I?

It’s easy to describe myself by the roles I play. I’m a mother, a wife, and an educator.
But those roles don’t fully explain who truly I am.

Who am I?
What am I passionate about?

Like many of you here, I try to live my life the best I can live every day — because to me,

this life is a second chance.

Living in America is a second chance.
Working at my current school is a second chance.
Luckily, my marriage — that’s my first chance, and I hope it’s my only one.

But the person you see today is not the person I used to be.

I’ve failed more times than I can count.

But every time I failed, I learned something — and I moved on.

I tried to learn from my mistakes and not to repeat them.
I believed in myself, and I kept going.

That’s what made me who I am today.

Who am I?

I’m passionate about helping others believe that they can have a second chance, just like I did.

I want to be someone who helps people find their ways again.

I don’t have a magic wand to fix everything — but I can listen. I can believe in people.

And I can give hope. If I can do it, you can do it, too.

My passion is helping people rewrite their stories.
I don’t know if the story will have a perfect ending,
but I believe every story deserves a hopeful new chapter.
