Highway to Heaven

-- A Hell called Heaven

If you step in this clean-looking, bridge-like road.

you might think it would lead to a place like a paradise

where a blue sky adorned with streaking little cloud

welcomes you trying to go to Heaven with no price.

However, at the end of the elegant wooden highway

a beach infested with human footprints leads the way

to the Atlantic Ocean often ravaged by furious hurricanes

and always teeming with container ships full of war pains.

This handsome bridge is not a short-cut to promised land,

but rather it could be an escape route from Savannah

where flowers are fighting to bloom with flying colors, at hand

and you are coming back from Tybee Island to Nirvana.

It’s true that this bridge is a highway to Heaven,

but in opposite direction.

나무로 만든 이 다리 같은 길은 타이비 섬 비치로 가는 길이다. 보통 비치는 도시의 바쁜 삶을 잠시 내려놓고 여유를 즐기려는 사람들이 오는 곳이라면, 비치는 지옥 같은 도시에서 탈출해서 오는 천국이 아닐까 시인은 상상력을 동원해 본다. 교통체증과 빽빽한 고층 건물, 쉴 틈을 주지 않는 비즈니스와 시시때때로 신경을 거스르는 인간 관계에서 도망나와 끝없이 펼쳐진 비치에서 모래성을 쌓고 망망대해를 보며 파도소리를 음악삼아 비키니의 여인들을 감상할 수 있는 곳이 천국이 아니면 무엇이랴! 그러나 천국이 이렇게 지루한 곳이라면, 시인은 차라리 삶의 진흙탕에 뛰어들어가 꽃을 피우는 곳이 진정한 천국이 아닐까 생각해 본다. 그래서 이 나무 길은 지루한 비치에서 벗어나 살아 움직이는 지옥이라는 이름의 천국으로 다시 들어오는 길이다.
