그는 느낀다. 그의 몸이 움직이기 시작한다는 것을.
그의 뇌에 산소와 포도당 공급이 촉진되고 심박수와 일회박출량이 늘어난다. 동공이 넓어지고 혈당 수준이 오른다. 신경 세포가 예민해지고 손 마디마디 근육이 민감하게 반응하기 시작한다.
그리고 그를 몰입과 쾌락으로 몰아넣는 고마운 녀석이 나타난다.
도파민. 마우드가는 도파민 중독자이다. 그의 삶의 궁극적 목적. 해킹의 목표는 도파민 분비 촉진이었다.
그는 시스템 침입을 시작했다. 정보 수집단계에서 수집한 정보를 바탕으로, 서버의 원격 버퍼 오버플로(buffer overflow) 취약점을 공격하였다. 단단하였다. 마치 피라미드 속에 홀로 갇힌 느낌이었다.
당연하다. 쉽다면 애초에 하지도 않았을 것이다.
어려움. 이것만이 그를 춤추게 했다. 인생이 쉽고 편안했다면 그는 진작에 자살했을 것이다.
그를 고통에 몰아넣는 녀석은, 알고 보니 안락함이었다.
세상이 부러워하는 금수저의 자식. 온갖 사치와 향락을 다 누리고 살았다. 그 끝을 알 수 없는 권력과 금력의 정점 속에 늘 널브러져 있었다. 하지만 쾌락이라는 허기진 배는 채워도 채워도 끝없는 갈증뿐이었다.
인간이 상상할 수 있는 온갖 기행이 시작되었다. 그러나 늘 고통이 아귀처럼 달라붙어 그의 육신과 정신을 갉아먹었다. 수렁이었고 끝이 없는 늪이었다.
그가 자학의 단계에 이르렀을 때 비로소 주위 사람들이 인식하기 시작했다.
길고 지루한 정신 병원을 들락날락했다.
그리고 그곳에서 아놀드 내시를 만났다. 같은 병동에 처음으로 친구가 생겼다.
둘은 거의 모든 시간을 같이했다. 사실 같이 있는 것 외에는 딱히 할 것도 없었다.
그의 만남은 새로운 시작이고, 출발은 그게 무엇이었던지 간에 약간의 긴장과 설렘을 그에게 주입하며 살아 있음에 대한 애착을 조금씩 느끼는 단계로 진행이 되었다.
마우드가는 아놀드가 사피엔티아의 형제이며 그의 별칭이 아니룻이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그는 아니룻의 도움으로 해킹의 세상에 푹 빠지게 되었다. 비로소 그가 고통을 느끼지 않는 시간이 늘어났다.
그것은 몰입이었다.
