“천일홍이 변하지 않는 사랑 이래.” 나는 도자기 같은 커피 컵과 케이크 조각, 샐러드를 그녀 앞에 놓았다. 통통한 보라색 꽃이 눈설다. 벽걸이 액자에는 하늘하늘 힘없이 팔랑이는 코스모스가 애처롭다.
<Cigarettes After Sex>의 <Apocalypse>가 흐른다. 지나치게 달짝지근하다. 베이스의 강약에 따라 진동이 느껴진다.

미자는 좀 순진한 면이 있다. 그녀는 하느님을 믿지 않으면서도 죄를 지으면 신에게 벌을 받을 것이라는 막연한 두려움을 지녔다. 그러면서 숫자 4나 혹은 13과 같은 것을 싫어하는 미신을 지녔고, 놀랍게도 점쟁이에게 찾아가 돈을 주고 거짓 예언을 귀담아듣곤 한다. 하지만 그래서 내가 싫어하는 것은 결코 아니다.
오히려 나는 그래서 좋아한다. 지나치게 깊이가 있거나 사려 깊고 점잖은 인간은 같이 하기가 힘들기 때문이다. 우리가 늘 얘기하는 <인간적인>이라는 말에는 따스한 마음과 동시에 약간의 단순함도 깃들어 있기 마련이다.
“그런 걸 믿어?” 게시판에 붙은 메모지 한 장이 떨어질 듯 달싹거린다. 마을에는 복사꽃이 노을처럼 퍼졌다.
여자는 커피 한 모금을 입에 넣고 웅얼거린다. 바리스타 같은 모습. 그러더니 꿀꺽 삼키고 나를 뚫어질 듯 쳐다본다. 영화 <봄날은 간다>에서 남자 주인공이 이렇게 말했지.
‘어떻게 사랑이 변하니?’ 이 세상에서 가장 멍청한 대사. 이렇게 물어야지.
‘어떻게 사랑이 안 변하니?’
“여기 커피 아주 좋아!” 여자의 엄지손가락이 정신없이 춤을 춘다. 그녀의 팔로워를 위한 친절한 안내문. 그녀는 벅찬 마음으로 마침표를 찍고 확인 버튼을 누른다. 지금, 이 순간 그녀의 삶은 축제다.
솜털 같은 하얀 털이 홀에 가득 내리는 상상을 한다.
