A mother’s love is very touching, of course, but it is often curiously selfish. I mean, there is a good deal of selfishness in it. The longer I live…… the more likely I feel that whatever was good enough for our fathers is not good enough for us. ✦ Children begin by loving their parents. after a time they judge them. Rarely, if ever, do they forgive them.

물론 어머니의 사랑은 감동적이지만 이상하게도 이기적일 때도 많다. 내 말은, 어머니의 사랑 속에는 상당한 이기심이 포함되어 있다는 거다. 살아갈수록......내가 절실히 느끼는 것은, 우리 아버지들에게 충분히 좋았던 것은 그게 무엇이든 우리에겐 충분히 좋은 게 아니라는 사실이다. ✦ 아이들은 부모를 사랑하면서 인생을 시작한다. 그러다 얼마 지나지 않아 부모를 판단한다. 그리고 간혹 있긴 하지만 거의 부모를 용서하지 않는다.
