사랑이란 누구나 할 수 있지만 아무나 할 수 없는 것

가난한 구둣방 주인 세묜은 어느 날 교회 옆에 알몸뚱이로 있는 미하일을 발견하고는 그를 집으로 데려온다. 세묜의 아내 마트료나는 남편이 돈을 벌어오기는커녕 노숙자를 데려와 화가 났다. 하지만 마트료나는 미하일을 집으로 들이고 식사도 제공한다. 세묜은 그에게 구두 수선 일을 가르쳐줬고 미하일은 능숙한 일꾼이 된다. 사실 미하일은 천사 미카엘이었는데, 아버지가 없는 두 자녀의 어머니를 데려오는 명령을 수행하던 중 차마 그 여인을 데려갈 수 없게 되자 하느님이 그 여인을 데려오면 세 가지 뜻을 알게 될 것이라는 말을 듣고 지상에 내려왔던 것이다. 그 세 가지 뜻 중 하나가 사람의 마음속에는 무엇이 있는가? 에 대한 질문인데 미카엘은 세묜을 통해 사람의 마음속에 사랑이 있다는 것을 알게 되었던 것이다. 톨스토이는 <사람은 무엇으로 사는가>를 통해 사랑한다는 것은 나의 작은 침대를 나눠주고 방을 내어주는 것이라고 말한다. 

밥 말리는 'Is This Love?'에서 싱글 침대를 함께 나눠 쓰는 걸 사랑이라고 노래했다.이것이 사랑인가요?라고 질문하지만 그는 이것이 사랑이라고 우리에게 강력하게 주장하고 있다. 전 세계인이 평화롭게 사랑하며 살아가길 바라는 마음이 노래로 잘 담아있다.

세묜은 가난했지만 자기가 가지고 있는 침대와 집을 내어줬다. 밥 말리도 침대를 함께 나눠 쓰는 게 사랑이라고 했다. 사랑이란 내가 가진 것을 나눠주는 일이라서 누구나 할 수 있는 반면에 이를 실천하기란 그 어떤 것보다 어려운 일이다. 누구나 할 수 있지만 아무나 할 수 없는 게 사랑이다.
