논문은 어떻게 쓸까요?

 

   본 내용은 논문을 써야하는데 쓰지 못하고, 길이 보이지 않는 저자신과 논문을 쓰려고하는 분과 공유하고자 하는 글입니다. 다소 미숙함이 있으나 공감해주시고 지적해주시고, 함께 논문의 결과를 얻게 되기를 바라는 마음입니다.   

 논문(論文)은 자신이 학문적 주장을 통해서 가설을 논문 형식에 맞추어 논증하는 글이다. 논문은 영어로 'paper, thesis, dessertation, article'  등으로 영문을 쓴다. 

  

    논문은 정확성(正確性), 객관성(客觀性), 불편성(不偏性), 입증성(立證性), 평이성(平易性)의 구비여건을 갖추어야 한다.(1) 정확성이란 통계상의 잘, 면밀한 분석을 통한 결과를 발표하는 것이며, 객관성은 확인할 수 있는 증거를 뒷받침한 결과라야 하고 다수의 학자의 객관적 근거와 타당성을 근거한 내용이어야 한다. 또한 논문은 선입견과 편중됨이 없이 진리앞에서 치우침이 없어야하고, 장황하지 않는 명료하고, 증거에 입각한 는입증이 있어야 하고, 누구라도 납득이 가능한 객관적 기술이 필요하다. 

  논문은 저자가 입증하기를 원하는 논증을 펼쳐야 한다. 특히나 논문은 저작권이나 논증을 하기 위한 자료의 일체의 출처가 어디인지 분명히 밝혀야 한다. 

1. 무엇부터 시작을 해야할까?

  대체 무엇을 어디서 부터 시작해야할지 시작부터 엄두가 나지 않는다. 타이틀title, 즉 논문에서 제목은 논문의 전체를 아우를 수 있어야 한다. 논문을 제대로 쓰려면 무엇보다 제대로 논문을 읽어야 할 것이다. 수많은 책을 읽은 사람이 한 권의 책을 제대로 쓰기 어려운 일이다. 하지만 책의 장르가 어떻고, 어떤 책을 쓰고 싶어하는지는 알게 된다. 논문 또한 다양한 논문도 읽어야 하겠지만, 무엇보다 자신이 쓰고자 하는 범주안에 논문을 추려내고 방향을 잡아야 한다. 

 

  석사의 경우 논문을 논문을 어디서 시작해야할지 모르기 때문에 일종의 공포감으로 시작 조차 엄두를 내지 못한다. 하지만 그 공포감은 박사과정에 왔을 더 증강될 수 있다. 석사는 어떻게 해서 마무리 지었다고 하지만 박사는 소논문을 써내야 하고, 분량 또한 만만치 않다. 

   '석사 수료'와 '석사 졸업' 사이에는 '졸업graduation'을 했는가 아직 졸업을 못한 것인가에 대한 엄연한 차이가 있다. 석박사 논문을 통과하지 못한 사람은 석사도 박사도 졸업한 것이 아니기 때문이다. 

  

   논문을 썼는가 아닌가는 자신의 지적인 한계를 어떤 형태로든 넘어섰는가 아닌가를 가늠한다.  엄격한 기준과 형식이지만 구색을 갖추고 어떤 의식ceremony를 치루었는가 마는가는 엄청나다. 마치 함께 사는 부부가 결혼식을 했는가 말았는가가 별차이가 없겠으나 아무래도 결혼식을 했던 커플은 사회가 인식하고 모두에게 공적인 커플임을 인증하는 행사를 치뤘다는 점에서 엄연한 다름이 있다.

  석사논문과 달리 박사논문은 학술지에 발표를 해야한다. 소논문을 발표하고 이러한 과정을 통해서 학문적 인증(academic certification)이 있는가 그렇지 못한가에 따라 사회적 인정의 정도는 확연히 차이가 난다. 그런 까닭에 박사과정에서는 자신이 발표할 학술지를 잘 살펴보고, 학술지의 분위기와 학술지에서 제시한 절차에 따라서 논문을 써야 한다. 

 2. 논문의 형식

     

   논문은 제목title, 초록abstract, 목차目次contents (cf. index 색인; 혼동하지 말것), 서론(preface), 본론(main subject), 결론(conclusion), 참고문헌목록(references), 부록(appendix) 의 순으로 작성한다. 박사논문은 석사보다 두배가량 길며 보다 심도있는 논증을 제시해야한다. 학술논문은 학술지에서 제시한 논문의 규정에 따라 정해진 분량만큼 작성야 한다. 

논문은 보통 제목, 초록, 목차, 서론, 본론, 결론, 참고 문헌 목록으로 구성된다. 여기에 부록이 붙기도 한다. 학위논문의 논문 길이는 자유로운 편이나, 심도있는 연구를 요구하는 박사학위 논문은 학·석사학위 논문에 비해 긴 편이다. 한편 학술논문은 보통 학술지나 학술대회에서 게재 안내시 그 길이를 제한하고 있으며, 이때 쪽 수나 단어·글자 수를 명시하여 제한하기도 한다.

Whether you’re earning your PhD, DBA, or other doctorate, your dissertation is the pinnacle of your doctoral degree program. That’s why being aware of common—yet avoidable—issues beforehand will make the process smoother.

We've summarized six issues commonly experienced when preparing a dissertation for review, and what you can do to easily avoid them.

Your dissertation’s preliminary pages are missing, incomplete, or out of order.    Preliminary pages include all pages before your dissertation’s main text begins. While it’s tempting to overlook the importance of these pages, they’ll set the tone for your entire dissertation—and they’re the first pages your reviewers will see. As such, it’s essential that the preliminary pages are not only correctly formatted, but in the correct order. Be sure to refer to your doctoral degree program’s dissertation template rather than guessing how these pages should appear.  

Your dissertation’s abstract is longer than one page.    You've done lots of exciting research for your dissertation and reached unique conclusions you're ready to share with the world. This excitement, not to mention all the knowledge you’ve gleaned, can often make it difficult to summarize your research into a single-page abstract. However, regardless of whether you’re attending a traditional or online university, it’s essential for your abstract to conform to your school’s particular doctoral dissertation guidelines. Typically, this dictates that the abstract be no more than one page.  

Your dissertation contains multiple formatting problems.    Your dissertation’s formatting is just as important as its content. By the time you write your dissertation, you should be familiar with your PhD program’s formatting guidelines. But even at the culmination of your doctoral degree, mistakes can still be made—especially in a lengthy document. Refer to your program’s dissertation template to ensure all formatting is correct, including the preferred citation style, page numbering, margins, and indents.  

Your dissertation contains words from the proposal stage.    Because you’ve spent months, even years, looking at the same document, it can be surprisingly easy to overlook the changes in tense required as your dissertation progresses. Thankfully, this is an easy issue to fix. Using your word processing program’s “find” feature, search for words such as “proposal” or “proposed,” then change them to words that reflect completed study versus proposed study.  

Your dissertation contains academic integrity violations.    This may seem like an obvious one, especially for those at the doctoral level, but academic oversights can happen, even if you didn’t plan them. This holds especially true for plagiarism, which is more than just word-for-word replication of someone else’s prose. Ideas themselves can be plagiarized if they’re not properly cited. Carefully review your on-campus or online university’s doctoral program’s guidelines on academic integrity, then make certain to stick to them…with no exception. Failure to do so could not only have serious ramifications for your dissertation, it could put your entire doctoral degree in jeopardy.
