보통 졸업이라고 하면 2월을 떠올리기 마련이지만 요즘 학교들은 봄방학이 사라지면서 12월 말에서 1월 초, 겨울방학에 들어가는 방학식 날이 곧 최고학년에게는 졸업식이 됩니다.

When people think of graduation, February usually comes to mind. But these days, as spring break has disappeared from the school calendar, the winter break ceremony held between late December and early January has effectively become graduation day for students in their final year.

제가 살고 있는 충북혁신도시는 면적은 크지 않지만 학령인구 비율이 높은 지역으로 초등학교 3개교, 중학교 2개교, 고등학교 2개교를 품고 있습니다. 그래서 이번 주 내내 꽃다발을 들고 걷는 학생들과 그 가족들을 심심치 않게 마주치게 될 것 같습니다.

Where I live, in Chungbuk Innovation City, the area itself is not very large, but it has a relatively high proportion of school-aged children. The city is home to three elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Because of this, throughout this week, I find myself frequently encountering students walking with bouquets of flowers, accompanied by their families.

미국에서는 졸업식에 명사를 초청해 연설을 듣거나 졸업생 대표가 연단에 올라 자신만의 이야기로 졸업 연설을 하는 것이 하나의 관례이지요. 맷 데이먼이나 코난 오브라이언 같은 유명 인사들의 졸업 연설은 한 번쯤 들어보셨을 것 같아 오늘은 조금 다르게 ‘평범한 한 학생’의 졸업식 연설을 가져와 보았습니다.

In the United States, it is customary for graduation ceremonies to feature speeches by distinguished guests or memorable addresses delivered by student representatives. You may already be familiar with graduation speeches by well-known figures such as Matt Damon or Conan O’Brien, so today I wanted to share something a little different: a graduation speech given by an ordinary student.

평범하다고 하기에는 참 반듯하게 잘생긴 데다, 말도 참 잘하는 청년이더군요. 그는 동료 졸업생들에게 우리는 ‘평범한 사람’ 일지도 모르지만, 평범함 역시 충분히 위대함에 도달할 수 있다고 말합니다. 그것이 세상 모두에게 인정 받든, 소수에게만 알려지든 그 자체는 중요하지 않다고요.

“Ordinary,” however, may not be quite the right word. The young man is handsome and an eloquent speaker as well. In his speech, he tells his fellow graduates that although we may be “average people,” being average does not prevent us from reaching greatness. Whether that greatness is recognized by the entire world or only by a few, he says, is not what truly matters.

그가 말하는 위대함이란 타인에게 먼저 손을 내밀고, 번거로움을 마다하지 않으며 배려를 실천하는 것, 그리고 그것은 이름 없이 빛나는 ‘숨은 영웅들’로부터 비롯된다고 이야기합니다. 부자가 되고 사회적으로 성공하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 스쳐 지나간 사람들의 삶에 조금 더 많은 행복과 희망을 남기는 것, 그것이 곧 유산을 남기는 일이며 위대함의 진짜 의미라고 말하는 이 청년의 연설을 여러분과 함께 나누고 싶어 이렇게 가져왔습니다. 사심을 조금 보태서요. ㅎㅎ

According to him, greatness lies in reaching out to others first, in choosing to be thoughtful even when it is inconvenient—and it is born from the actions of quiet, unseen “unsung heroes.”

Rather than becoming wealthy or achieving social success, he says, true greatness and the real meaning of leaving a legacy lie in leaving a little more happiness and hope in the lives of those we happen to cross paths with. I wanted to share this young man’s speech with you—perhaps with a touch of personal bias.

가족 중에 졸업을 맞은 학생이 있는 학부모님들, 그리고 아이들을 가르치고 또 한 번의 배웅을 해내신 모든 교사 여러분, 정말 수고 많으셨습니다. 졸업을 진심으로 축하드립니다.

Today is an exciting day: today I'm going to give you a speech.

솔직히 말해서, 관객을 벌거벗은 모습으로 상상하면 긴장이 풀린다는 말은 전혀 이해가 되지 않습니다. 지금 저는 그냥 더 불편할 뿐이에요. 특히 워들 선생님 앞에서는요. 음, 아무튼. 이 ‘소셜 미디어 세대’와 원활한 소통을 위해 해시태그와 대중문화 레퍼런스를 사용하도록 하겠습니다. #천만에요. 신사 숙녀 여러분, 안녕하세요. 오늘은 정말 특별한 날입니다. 왜냐하면 오늘, 제가 연설을 하게 되었기 때문입니다.

Now, graduates, I don't know if you know me, but I'm Chase. We went to High School together. That was good times, follow me on Twitter. And I want to give a big congratulations to everyone --including myself-- for being here today. The world we live in is plagued with* dangers: Ebola, ISIS, Global Warming, facial acne. And despite all the odds, we still managed to graduate, so let's give us a big round of applause.

졸업생 여러분, 혹시 저를 아시는지 모르겠지만 저는 체이스입니다. 우리 고등학교를 함께 다녔죠. 참 좋은 시절이었습니다. 트위터 팔로우도 잊지 마시고요. 그리고 오늘 이 자리에 함께한 모든 분들, 저 자신을 포함해서 모두에게 큰 축하를 전하고 싶습니다. 우리가 사는 세상은 수많은 위험으로 가득 차 있습니다. 에볼라, ISIS, 지구 온난화, 그리고 얼굴 여드름까지요. 그 모든 역경 속에서도 우리는 결국 졸업에 성공했습니다. 그러니 우리 자신에게 큰 박수를 보내봅시다.

It was only three years ago that we came to the labyrinth known as Weber High. As young, timid sophomores we found ourselves lost in its halls like they were the changing stair cases of Hogwarts. We danced to lyrics we did not understand in the song "Gangnam Style". We said "YOLO" and "cray-cray*" as if we were supposed to. Thank goodness we have "yeet*" now. We anticipated our cataclysmic* doom at the end of 2012. And back then, Weber High School had no windows. Oh wait, it still doesn't. Ooh. I know, I know, it was a cliché joke but it was still necessary, #sorrynotsorry.

불과 3년 전, 우리는 ‘웨버 고등학교’라는 미로에 발을 들였습니다. 풋풋하고 소심했던 10학년이었던 우리는, 마치 호그와트의 움직이는 계단처럼 복잡한 복도에서 길을 잃곤 했죠. 우리는 가사의 의미도 모른 채 ‘강남스타일’에 맞춰 춤을 췄고, ‘YOLO’와 ‘크레이지’라는 말을 당연하다는 듯 사용했습니다. 다행히 지금은 ‘yeet’라는 단어가 있네요. 우리는 2012년의 종말을 진지하게 걱정했고, 그 당시 웨버 고등학교에는 창문이 없었습니다. 아, 잠깐만요. 지금도 없네요. 알아요, 알아요. 진부한 농담인 거 압니다. 그래도 꼭 필요했어요. #미안하지만미안하지는않아요

Though nervous as sophomores, we started getting a hang of things, and Junior year for many of us brought experience, and for many more of us it meant Stage 1 Senioritis. And now, here we are: done with High School! As Charles Dickens put it, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." But now we are through with the stressful days of AP and ACT testing.

처음에는 긴장에 떨던 우리였지만, 점점 학교생활에 익숙해졌습니다. 11학년은 누군가에게는 경험의 해였고, 또 다른 누군가에게는 ‘1단계 시니어병’이 시작된 시기였죠. 그리고 지금, 우리는 여기 있습니다. 고등학교를 끝냈습니다! 찰스 디킨스의 말처럼, “그 시절은 최고의 시간이자 최악의 시간이었습니다.” 하지만 이제 AP 시험과 ACT 시험이라는 스트레스의 나날도 끝났습니다.

We have raised tens of thousands of dollars for Quarters & Cans, and inhaled hundreds of pounds of baby powder during football. We have survived "WHS Screenshots*". And last but not least, we have realized that we are the most attractive class ever. As our Student Body President, Mikah Meyer, has observed, quote, "One might say we've aged well."

우리는 ‘Quarters & Cans’를 위해 수만 달러를 모았고, 미식축구 시즌 동안 수백 파운드의 베이비파우더를 들이마셨습니다. ‘WHS 스크린샷’ 사건도 무사히 살아남았죠. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 사실 하나를 깨달았습니다. 우리는 역사상 가장 잘생기고 예쁜 졸업반이라는 사실입니다. 우리 학생회장 미카 마이어의 말에 따르면, “우리가 꽤 잘 늙은 것 같다고 말할 수도 있겠죠.”

Now at the end of our careers as students, we have an opportunity: now is our time to take on the world, and to find and pursue our passions; to quote unquote, "Leave a Legacy." William Shakespeare, and also Channing Tatum, once said, "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."

이제 학생으로서의 삶의 끝에 서 있는 우리는 하나의 기회를 맞이했습니다. 세상에 도전하고, 우리의 열정을 발견하고 추구할 시간입니다. 흔히 말하는 ‘유산을 남기는 것’ 말이죠. 윌리엄 셰익스피어와, 그리고 채닝 테이텀도 이런 말을 했습니다. “어떤 이는 위대하게 태어나고, 어떤 이는 위대함을 이루며, 또 어떤 이는 위대함을 떠안게 된다.”

In life, we can't always count on being born great, or having greatness thrust upon us, but always, always remember that the opportunity to achieve greatness is within our grasp. Keep in mind that many of our social and political leaders and heroes started their lives as an average person; as just one of you and me.

인생에서 우리는 항상 위대하게 태어나거나, 위대함이 자동으로 주어지기를 기대할 수는 없습니다. 하지만 언제나, 언제나 기억해야 할 것은 위대함을 이룰 기회는 우리 손이 닿는 곳에 있다는 사실입니다. 우리 사회와 정치의 수많은 지도자와 영웅들 역시 처음에는 평범한 사람이었다는 점을 기억하세요. 바로 여러분과 저처럼 말입니다.

Despite the failures and mistakes we will make, and although we may be "average", we find that the average can achieve greatness, whether recognized by the world or just a few. Greatness comes from our friends reaching out to us, those who go out of their way* to be thoughtful; the "unsung heroes".

앞으로 우리는 수많은 실패와 실수를 겪게 될 것입니다. 우리가 ‘평범한 사람’ 일지도 모릅니다. 하지만 평범함 역시 위대함에 도달할 수 있습니다. 그것이 세상 모두에게 인정 받든, 소수에게만 알려지든 말이죠. 위대함은 친구들이 먼저 손을 내밀어 줄 때, 번거로움을 마다하지 않고 배려를 실천하는 사람들, 이름 없이 빛나는 ‘숨은 영웅들’로부터 비롯됩니다.

If there's anything you take from today, remember that to "leave a legacy" and to "achieve greatness" is not to get money and recognition, it's to leave those with whom you cross paths with a little more happiness and hope. Our time here together as a senior class will not be remembered by grades, popularity, likes, or favorites, but by our relationships. The kind of person you were. These are legacies, the kind we must leave.

오늘 이 자리에서 단 하나만 기억해 간다면, ‘유산을 남긴다’ 거나 ‘위대함을 이룬다’는 것은 돈이나 명성을 얻는 일이 아니라는 점을 기억해 주세요. 우리가 스쳐 지나간 사람들의 삶에 조금 더 많은 행복과 희망을 남기는 것, 그것이 진짜 의미입니다. 우리의 고등학교 마지막 시간은 성적, 인기, 좋아요 수, 즐겨찾기로 기억되지 않을 것입니다. 우리가 어떤 사람이었는지, 어떤 관계를 맺었는지로 기억될 것입니다. 이것이 바로 우리가 남겨야 할 유산입니다.

Class of 2015, it's been a #splendid 3 years with you, and from the bottom of my heart I wish you all the very, very, very best. Thank you.
