요즘 날씨가 정말 춥죠? 주말 동안 설경에 잠시 취해 있다가, 월요일이 되어 다시 일터로 향하시느라 모두 고생 많으셨습니다. 오늘은 오후에 잠깐 눈보라도 흩날렸고, 주말 동안 내린 눈이 응달에 얼어붙어 있어 길이 꽤 위험한 하루이기도 했어요.
그런 날씨 때문이었을까요. 이번 주에는 어떤 영상으로 영어 공부를 해볼까 고민하다가, 몇 년 전 인상 깊게 보았던 이 다큐멘터리가 문득 떠올랐습니다. 휘몰아치는 바람 소리와 어딘지 비극적으로 들리는 내레이션 속에서 엄마를 찾아 오들오들 떨고 있는 아기 펭귄을 보다 보니 저도 모르게 눈물이 맺히더라고요. 그래도 해피엔딩이라 다행이지요? ^^
우리도 펭귄들처럼 서로의 온기를 나눌 수 있겠지요. 거창한 일이 아니어도 괜찮습니다. 우연히 마주친 사람에게 건네는 따뜻한 미소 하나, 친절한 말 한마디도 이 겨울을 버티게 해주는 온기가 될 수 있으니까요. 뒤따라 들어오는 사람을 위해 문을 잠시 잡아 주는 일, 엘리베이터에서 몇 초쯤 기다려 주는 작은 행동들 또한 소중한 온기입니다. 내일도 날씨는 여전히 춥겠지요. 서로에게 작은 온기를 건네며 이 겨울을 함께 살아가면 어떨까요.

It’s been really cold lately, hasn’t it? After briefly soaking in* the beautiful snowy scenery over the weekend, many of us had to head back to work on Monday, and I know it wasn’t easy. This afternoon, a few snow flurries drifted through the air, and the snow that fell over the weekend has frozen in the shaded areas, making the roads quite slippery and dangerous in places.

Maybe it was the weather, but as I was thinking about what kind of video we should use for our English study this week, a documentary I watched a few years ago suddenly came to mind. Listening to the howling wind and the somber*, almost tragic narration, and watching a baby penguin shivering as it searches for its mother, I found myself tearing up without realizing it. Thankfully, it has a happy ending.

Couldn’t we, like penguins, share our warmth with one another? It doesn’t have to be anything grand. A warm smile shared with a stranger, or a single kind word, can be enough to help someone endure the cold of winter. Holding the door for the person coming in behind you, or waiting a few extra seconds for someone in an elevator—these small gestures, too, become quiet forms of warmth. Tomorrow will likely be cold again. So perhaps, this winter, we might choose to live it together by passing along small bits of warmth to one another.

Already the blizzard has reached the colony. The chick's only protection is his overcoat of down, and at -40 degrees, it's simply not enough. Unfortunately, the other mothers care only for their own.
이미 거대한 눈보라가 펭귄들의 서식지에 도달했습니다. 아기 펭귄을 보호해 주는 것은 솜털로 된 얇은 털옷뿐이라 영하 40도의 추위 앞에서는 턱없이 부족합니다. 안타깝게도 다른 어미들은 오직 자신의 새끼만을 돌볼 뿐입니다.
The chick's mother calls one last time. But her cries are lost on the wind.
아기 펭귄의 어미는 마지막으로 새끼를 부르며 울부짖습니다. 하지만 그 절박한 울음소리는 거센 바람 속으로 사라지고 맙니다.
At last he's found—and not a moment too soon. Within a few hours, the full force of* the storm engulfs* the colony. The chick may be safe, but as temperatures drop to -60, his mother's warmth is no longer enough.

She needs to find refuge in the shared warmth of the other penguins. As 100-kilometer-an-hour winds lash the colony, the penguins huddle together. Sheltered from the storm, they're snug at last.

But out on the ice, the lone father is still paying the price for his mistake. His only hope is to reach the safety of the colony in time.

In the comfort of the huddle, the penguins have all the shelter they need. In the center, temperatures can even reach a toasty 37 degrees. To cool down, they shuffle to the outside, letting others take their place.
펭귄 무리의 중심에서는 필요한 모든 보호가 이루어집니다. 중앙의 온도는 무려 영상 37도까지 올라가기도 합니다. 너무 더워지면 바깥쪽으로 이동하고 다른 펭귄들이 그 자리를 대신하며 자리를 순환합니다.
By sharing body heat, they weather any storm*. Desperate for the warmth of the family, the lone father struggles on for the sake of his chick. He simply has to make it back.

Then, through the blizzard—salvation. Against the odds, he's made it home.
그리고 눈보라 속에서 마침내 구원이 찾아옵니다. 불가능해 보였던 상황 속에서도 그는 결국 집으로 돌아옵니다.
