ZARATHUSTRA'S PROLOGUE - 3
When Zarathustra arrived at the nearest of the towns lying against the forest, he found in that very place many people assembled in the market square: for it had been announced
that a tight-rope walker would be appearing. And Zarathustra spoke thus to the people:
I teach you the Superman. Man is something that should be overcome. What have you done to overcome him?
All creatures hitherto have created something beyond themselves: and do you want to be the ebb of this great tide, and
return to the animals rather than overcome man?
What is the ape to men? A laughing-stock or a painful embarrassment. And just so shall man be to the Superman: a laughing - stock or a painful embarrassment.
You have made your way from worm to man, and much in you is still worm. Once you were apes, and even now man is more of an ape than any ape.
But he who is the wisest among you, he also is only a discord and hybrid of plant and of ghost. But do I bid you become ghosts or plants?
Behold, I teach you the Superman.
The Superman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: The Superman shall be the meaning of the earth!
I entreat you, my brothers, remain true to the earth, and do not believe those who speak to you of superterrestrial hopes! They are poisoners, whether they know it or not.
They are despisers of life, atrophying and self-poisoned men, of whom the earth is weary: so let them be gone!
Once blasphemy against God was the greatest blasphemy, but God died, and thereupon these blasphemers died too. To blaspheme the earth is now the most dreadful offence, and to esteem the bowels of the Inscrutable more highly than the
meaning of the earth.
Once the soul looked contemptuously upon the body: and then this contempt was the supreme good - the soul wanted the body lean, monstrous, famished. So the soul thought to escape from the body and from the earth.
Oh, this soul was itself lean, monstrous, and famished: and cruelty was the delight of this soul!
But tell me, my brothers: What does your body say about your soul? Is your soul not poverty and dirt and a miserable ease?
In truth, man is a polluted river. One must be a sea, to receive a polluted river and not be defiled.
Behold, I teach you the Superman: he is this sea, in him your great contempt can go under.
What is the greatest thing you can experience? It is the hour of the great contempt. The hour in which even your happiness grows loathsome to you, and your reason and your virtue also.
The hour when you say: What good is my happiness? It is poverty and dirt and a miserable ease. But my happiness should justify existence itself!'
The hour when you say: What good is my reason? Does it long for knowledge as the lion for its food? It is poverty and dirt and a miserable ease!'
The hour when you say: 'What good is my virtue? It has not yet driven me mad! How tired I am of my good and my evil! It is all poverty and dirt and a miserable ease!'
The hour when you say: 'What good is my justice? I do not see that I am fire and hot coals. But the just man is fire and hot coals!'
The hour when you say: What good is my pity? Is not pity the cross upon which he who loves man is nailed? But my pity is no crucifixion!'
Have you ever spoken thus? Have you ever cried thus? Ah, that I had heard you crying thus!
It is not your sin, but your moderation that cries to heaven, your very meanness in sinning cries to heaven!
Where is the lightning to lick you with its tongue? Where is the madness, with which you should be cleansed?
Behold, I teach you the Superman: he is this lightning, he is this madness!
When Zarathustra had spoken thus, one of the people cried: 'Now we have heard enough of the tight-rope walker; let us see him, too!' And all the people laughed at Zarathustra. But the tight-rope walker, who thought that the words applied to him, set to work.

짜라투스트라가 숲 가까이에 있는 타운에 도착했을 때, 시장 복판에 사람들이 많이 모여있는 것을 보았다: 왜냐하면 곧 외줄 타기 광대가 줄타기 묘기를 보여줄 것이라는 방송이 있었기 때문이었다. 그곳에서 짜라투스트라는 그 사람들에게 이렇게 말했다:

지금까지 모든 생물들은 자신들을 넘어서는 무언가를 창조해 왔다. 그런데 너희들은 이 거대한 밀물에서 썰물이 되고자 하는가? 자신을 넘어서려고 하지 않고 다시 짐승으로 되돌아가고자 하는가?
인간에게 있어 원숭이는 어떤 존재인가? 그저 웃음거리이고 부끄러운 존재이지 않나. 초인에게 있어서 사람도 꼭 이와 같다: 그저 하나의 웃음거리이고 부끄러운 존재인 것이다.
너희들은 벌레에서 인간으로 변해왔는데 너희 안에는 여전히 벌레의 속성을 많이 품고 있다. 예전에 너희는 원숭이들이었는데, 지금도 사람들은 원숭이 보다도 더 원숭이 같다.
또한 너희 중에서 가장 현명한 자도 단지 식물과 혼령의 결합으로 태어난 이상한 돌연변이 일뿐이다. 그러니 내가 너희들에게 식물이 되라거나 혼령이 되라고 강권하진 않는다.
보아라, 내가 너희들에게 초인에 대해 가르쳐주겠다.
초인은 대지의 뜻이다. 너희들 스스로의 의지로 외쳐라: '초인은 이 땅이 바라는 것이다'라고!
형제들이여 너희에게 간곡히 말하노니, 이 땅에 충실하고, 저 천상의 희망에 대해 말하는 자들을 믿지 말라. 그들은 너희에게 독을 퍼트리는 자들이다, 그들이 그것을 알면서 하던지 모르면서 하던지 간에.
그들은 삶을 경멸하는 자들이고, 스스로 독을 마시고 죽어가는 자들이다. 이들 때문에 대지는 너무 지쳤다: 그러니 이런 자들을 쫓아내라!
예전엔 하나님에 대한 모독이 가장 큰 모독이었지만 신이 죽었으니, 신성모독자들도 다 죽은 것이다. 이제는 이 땅을 모독하는 것이 가장 끔찍한 모독인데, 그 알 수 없는 존재의 내장을 이 땅의 뜻보다 더 높이는 것이다.
예전엔 영혼이 육체를 아주 멸시했는데, 이런 육신의 멸시가 최상의 선이었다 - 영혼은 육체가 깡 마르고 혐오스럽고 굶주리기를 바랐다. 그렇게 해서 영혼이 이 땅으로부터, 육체로부터 해방될 수 있을거라고 생각했던 것이었다.
아! 그런데 그 영혼이 사실은 깡 말랐고 혐오스럽고 굶주렸던 거였다: 잔인함이 이 영혼의 기쁨이었다니!
그러니 형제들이여, 너희 몸이 너희 영혼에 대해서 뭐라고 말하고 있는가? 너희 영혼은 궁핍하고 불결하고 비참한 안락이 아닌가?
인간은 더럽혀진 강물이다. 그 더러운 강물을 받아들이면서도 더럽혀지지 않기 위해서는 바다가 되어야 한다.
보아라, 내가 너희에게 초인에 대해 가르쳐주겠다: 이 바다가 초인이고, 그 안에서 너의 위대한 경멸도 아래로 흘러 들어간다.
너희가 경험할 수 있는 가장 위대한 것이 무언인가? 그건 바로 위대한 경멸의 시간이다. 그 시간에는 너의 행복도 너에게 역겨운 것이 되며, 너의 이성이나 너의 덕성도 또한 그렇게 역겨워진다.
그때 너는 이렇게 말한다: '나의 행복이 뭐가 좋다는 건가? 그저 궁핍과 불결함과 비참한 안락일 뿐. 하지만 나의 행복은 존재한 적이나 있었나!'
그때 너는 또 이렇게 말한다: '나의 이성이 뭐가 좋다는 건가? 사자가 먹이를 갈망하듯이 나의 이성 또한 그 사자처럼 지식을 갈망하고 있지 않은가? 그저 궁핍과 불결함과 비참한 안락일 뿐!.
그때 너는 또 이렇게 말한다: '나의 덕성이 뭐가 좋다는 건가? 나를 광기로 내 몰지도 못했다! 나는 나의 선과 악에 대해 지쳤다! 그저 모두 궁핍과 불결함과 비참한 안락일 뿐!
그때 너는 또 이렇게 말한다: 나의 정의로움이 뭐가 좋다는 건가? 내가 타는 불도 되지 못하고 뜨거운 숯불도 되지 못했지 않았나? 하지만 정의로운 자는 타는 불이요 뜨거운 숯불이다!'
그때 너는 또 이렇게 말한다: 나의 동정심이 뭐가 좋다는 건가? 동정심이란 인간을 사랑해 못 박힌 십자가가 아닌가? 그러나 나의 동정심은 십자가도 못된다!'
너는 이렇게 말해 보았느냐? 이렇게 소리쳐 보았느냐? 아, 너희가 이렇게 외치는 것을 내가 들었었더라면!
하늘을 향해 부르짖어야 할 것은 너의 죄가 아니고 너의 적당히함이다, 죄를 짓는 너의 그 비열함이 하늘을 향해 부르짖는 것이다!
혀로 너를 핥아 줄 번개는 어디에 있는가? 너의 더러운 것들을 씻겨 줄 그 광기는 어디 있단 말인가?
보아라, 내가 너희에게 초인에 대해 가르쳐주겠다: 이 번개가 초인이고, 이 광기가 초인인 것이다!
짜라투스트라가 이렇게 말했을 때 군중 속에서 한 사람이 소리쳤다: '이제 우리가 외줄 타는 자에 대해 충분히 들었으니 그를 보여주시오!' 그때 모든 사람들이 짜라투스트라를 보고 웃었다. 그런데 이때 외줄 타는 광대가 사람들이 자기를 부른다고 생각하고 줄을 탈 준비를 했다.
덧) 이 땅에서 태어나 다시 이 땅으로 돌아갈 인간이 대지의 뜻에 따라 자신을 극복하는 삶을 살아가야 하는데도, 하늘의 헛된 소망을 바라며 살아가면서 이 땅에서의 삶을 경멸한다는 것은 정말 불행한 일이다.
그런데 이것은 신이 죽었단 사실을 알면서도, 아니면 정말 몰라서, 허망한 하늘나라와 영혼의 구원을 위해 육체를 미워하고 이 땅의 삶을 포기하도록 가르쳐온 종교인들의 죄가 크다고 할 것이다.
그들은 스스로의 삶도 망치면서 수많은 사람들에게 치명적인 죽음의 독을 뿌리는 자들이다.
매 순간 기억하자.
인간은 극복되어져야 할 그 무엇이다.
나는 오늘도 나 자신을 극복하기 위해 무엇을 하였는가?
천상의 가치를 말하는 자들을 믿지 말고 대지의 뜻에따라 매 순간 더 나은 존재로 나아가는 초인이 되자.
인간은 더럽혀진 강물이다. 그 더러운 강물을 받아들이면서도 더럽혀지지 않기위해서는 바다가 되어야 한다. 초인이 되어야 한다.
