There are preachers of death: and the earth is full of those to whom departure from life must be preached.
The earth is full of the superfluous, life has been corrupted by the many-too-many. Let them be lured by 'eternal life' out of this life!
Yellow men or black men: that is what the preachers of death are called. But I want to show them to you in other colours.
There are the dreadful creatures who carry a beast of prey around within them, and have no choice except lusts or self-mortifcation. And even their lusts are self-mortification.
They have not yet even become men, these dreadful creatures. Let them preach departure from life and depart themselves!
There are the consumptives of the soul: they are hardly born before they begin to die and to long for doctrines of weariness and renunciation.
They would like to be dead, and we should approve their wish! Let us guard against awakening these dead men and damaging these living coffins.
They encounter an invalid or an old man or a corpse; and straightway they say 'Life is refuted!'
But only they are refuted, they and their eye that sees only one aspect of existence.
Muffled in deep depression, and longing for the little accidents that bring about death: thus they wait and clench their teeth.
Or: they snatch at sweets and in doing so mock their childishness: they cling to their straw of life and mock that they are still clinging to a straw.
Their wisdom runs: 'He who goes on living is a fool, but we are such fools! And precisely that is the most foolish thing in life!'
'Life is only suffering' - thus others of them speak, and they do not lie: so see to it that you cease to live! So see to it that the life which is only suffering ceases!
And let the teaching of your virtue be: 'You shall kill yourself! You shall steal away from yourself!
'Lust is sin' - thus say some who preach death - 'let us go aside and beget no children!'
'Giving birth is laborious' - say others -
'why go on giving birth? One gives birth only to unhappy children!' And they too are preachers of death.
'Men are to be pitied' - thus say others again. 'Take what I have! Take what I am! By so much less am I bound to life!'
If they were compasionate from the very heart they would seek to make their neighbours disgusted with life. To be evil-
that would be their true good.
But they want to escape from life: what is it to them that, with their chains and gifts, they bind others still more firmly to it?
And you too, you to whom life is unrestrained labour and anxiety: are you not very weary of life? Are you not very ripefor the sermon of death?
All of you, to whom unrestrained labour, and the swift, the new, the strange, are dear, you endure yourselves ill, your industry is flight and will to forget yourselves.
If you believed more in life, you would devote yourselves less to the moment. But you have insuficient capacity for waiting - or even for laziness!
Everywhere resound the voices of those who preach death: and the earth is full of those to whom death must be preached.
Or 'eternal life'; it is all the same to me - provided they pass away quickly!

죽음의 설교자들에 대하여
죽음의 설교자들이 있다: 그리고 이 땅에는 죽어야 한다는 설교를 들어야 할 사람들로 가득 차 있다.
세상에는 불필요한 사람들로 넘치고, 생명은 너무나 많은 사람들에 의해 오염되어 왔다. 이런 사람들은 '영생'이란 미끼를 물고 그냥 죽도록 내버려 두어라!
황색인들 또는 흑인들이라고: 이 죽음의 설교자들이 불리우지만, 난 그들을 다른 색깔로 보여주겠다.
내면에 맹수를 데리고 다니는 끔찍한 생물들이 있는데, 그들은 색욕 또는 금욕 외의 어떤 선택지도 가지고 있지 않다. 그런데 그들의 색욕 조차도 금욕인 것이다.
그들은 아직 인간도 되지 못한 끔찍한 생물인 것이다. 이들이 죽음을 설교하는 것을 그냥 놔두고 그들 스스로도 죽으라고 놓아둬라!
영혼이 소진된 자들이 있다: 그들은 태어나기도 전에 이미 죽기를 시작하고 피곤과 포기의 교리를 갈망하기 시작한다.
이들은 죽고 싶어 한다, 그러니 우리는 그들의 소원을 들어주어야 한다! 이 죽은 인간들이 깨어나지 못하도록 잘 지키고 이 살아있는 관들을 부수지 못하게 잘 지키자.
이들이 병든자나 늙은이나 시체를 볼 때; 그들은 곧바로 '인생은 헛되다!'라고 말한다.
하지만 단지 그들과 인생의 단면만 보는 그들의 눈이 헛된 것이다. 그들은 깊은 우울증에 숨이 막혀서 죽음을 가져올 작은 사고를 이를 악물고 기다린다.
아니면: 그들은 사탕을 잡아채고선 그렇게 하는 자신의 어리석음을 조롱한다: 이들은 그들의 생명줄을 붙들고 있으면서 여전히 생명줄을 붙잡고 있다는 것을 조롱한다.
그들의 지혜는 이렇게 말한다: '계속 살아가는 자는 바보다, 하지만 우리가 그런 바보들이 아닌가! 바로 이것이 인생에서 가장 어리석은 것이다!'
'인생은 단지 고통이다' - 이렇게 또 다른 자들은 말한다, 그리고 그들은 거짓말하지 않는다면: 그렇게 살기를 그만두는지 보자! 단지 고통뿐인 삶을 중단하는지 보자!
그러니 너희의 덕의 가르침을 실천하여라: '너 자신을 살인하라! 너 자신을 도둑질하라!
'색욕은 죄다' - 죽음을 설교하는 어떤 자들은 이렇게도 말한다 - '색욕을 버리고 아이를 낳지 말자!'
'출산은 힘들다' - 또 다른 자들이 말하기를 - '왜 계속 아이를 낳느냐? 사람은 계속 불행한 아이들을 낳는 것이다!' 이들도 역시 죽음의 설교자들이다.
'사람을 긍휼히 여겨야 한다' - 또 다른 사람들은 말한다. '내 소유물을 가져가라! 내 자신도 가져가라! 그렇게 함으로 나는 훨씬 덜 인생에 얽매이게 된다!'
만약 그들이 이런 마음으로 진정 이웃들에 대한 동정심을 갖고 있다면, 그들 이웃들이 산다는 것을 아주 역겨워하도록 만들려고 해야 할 것이다. 악을 행하는 것 - 그것이 그들의 진정한 선이 될 것이다.
하지만 그들은 사는 것으로부터 도망가길 원하면서: 왜 여전히 관계와 선물들로 다른 사람들을 더 단단히 삶에 묶으려고 하느냐?
그리고 삶이 끝없는 수고와 근심인 너희 역시: 삶이 아주 피곤하지 않느냐? 죽음의 설교를 들을 때가 무르익지 않았느냐?
끝없는 수고를 하는 너희들 모두와 재빠른 사람들과 새롭고 낯선 사람들은 모두 소중하다, 너희는 아픔을 견디고 있고, 너희의 근면함은 자신을 도피하고 잊으려는 의지이다.
만일 너희가 삶을 더 믿는다면 현재의 순간에 덜 헌신할 것이다. 하지만 너희는 기다릴 수 있는 능력이 부족하다 - 게으름 조차도 부릴 능력이 없다.
죽음을 설교하는 자들의 목소리가 여기저기서 울려오고 있고: 세상엔 죽음의 설교를 들어야 할 사람들로 가득하다.
또는 '영생'이란 소리가 들리는데; 나에겐 모두 똑같은 소리이다 - 그저 그들이 빨리 사라지기를 바랄 뿐!
