Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
웃어라, 세상이 너와 함께 웃을 것이다.
Weep, and you weep alone.                                  
울어라, 너 혼자 울게되리라.
For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth,            
낡고 슬픈 이세상에서의 환희는 빌려야 하지만,
But has trouble enough of it's own.                        
고통은 그 자체만으로 가득하기에.
Sing, and the hills will answer;                             
노래하라, 언덕들이 화답하리라.
Sigh, it is lost on the air.                                      
탄식하라, 허공에 흩어지리라.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,                     
메아리는 즐거운 소리에 울려퍼지지만
But shrink from voicing care.                                 
근심의 소리는 외면하리라.
 
Rejoice, and men will seek you;                            
기뻐하라. 사람들이 너를 찾을 것이다.
Grieve, and they turn and go.                                
슬퍼하라, 그들은 너를 떠나리라.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,           
사람들은 너의 즐거움을 원하지만
But they do not need your woe.                             
너의 고통은 필요로 하지 않는다.
Be glad, and your friends are many;                       
즐거워하라, 친구가 늘어날 것이다.
Be sad, and you lose them all.                              
슬퍼하라, 그들을 모두 잃으리라.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,        
누구도 달콤한 와인은 거절하지 않지만
But alone you must drink life's gall.                        
인생의 쓴맛은 너 혼자 마셔야만 한다.
 
Feast, and your halls are crowded;                        
잔치하라, 네 집은 사람들로 넘쳐나리라.
Fast, and the world goes by.                                 
굶주려라, 세상은 너를 지나치리라.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,                 
성공과 베풂은 네 삶을 도와주지만
But no man can help you die.                                
너의 죽음은 아무도 도울수 없다.  
There is room in the halls of pleasure                    
즐거움의 복도는 넓어서
For a long and lordly train,                                    
길고 화려한 행렬을 들일수 있지만
But one by one we must all file on                         
우리가 좁은 고통의 통로를 지날땐
Through the narrow aisles of pain.                        
모두 한줄로 지나가야만 한다.
