Seasons Greetings
That night, Joseph stayed by Elena's side as usual. After completing her experiment, she left Edward's mansion and smiled when she saw Joseph waiting. The two walked quietly. The stars were calm, the breeze gentle.
"The UV reaction experiment was very interesting today," Elena said. "Edward's proposal was a bit radical, but the results were amazing."
Joseph was silent for a moment. His eyes were heavier than usual, and his pace slowed.
"Miss Wintering," he began cautiously. "You must be careful about Edward Hawthorne."
Elena stopped. "What are you talking about?" Joseph looked at her and spoke slowly, as if recalling an old memory.
"He... was once my closest friend. We used to work together. But he... chose fame over truth."
Elena looked at him, surprised. “Edward…?” “He falsified experimental results, and as a result, a colleague was expelled from the society. I opposed it, and since then, we’ve had a falling out.”
Elena stared at his face in silence. Joseph’s eyes were filled with sadness, anger, and wounds that still lingered.
“His interest in you… isn’t just about his research. He’s always acted for his own benefit.”
Elena bowed her head. She recalled her conversation with Edward. His gaze, his tone, the rose he gave her. Was it sincere, or another calculation? “You’re worried about me,” she said. Joseph replied softly. “You… aren’t just a researcher. You’re a seeker of truth. I hope that truth… isn’t hurt.”
They continued walking. That night, for the first time, Elena felt a shadow of doubt in her heart. And Joseph’s quiet sincerity, shining softly within that shadow, shone.
