난 연주만 할 거라... 연주하기도 벅찬데... 음악이론을 공부해야 하나? 이런 질문을 반복적으로 하는 이유는 아무리 여기저길 찾아봐도 '그래, 안 해도 된다'라는 답변이 나오지 않기 때문이 아닐까? 다시 말하면 필요 없다는 얘기를 듣고 싶은 거다.가급적 권위 있는 사람이면 더 좋다. 즉, 답을 찾는 게 아니라 자신의 생각에 동조해 줄 지원군을 찾고 있는 것은 아닌지 반성해야 한다. 내가 그랬으니까.
하지만 안타깝게도 그런 답은 없었고 앞으로도 찾으면 언젠가 나올 거라는 기대는 오래전에 버렸다. 그러니 더 이상 안 해도 된다는 답을 찾는데 시간을 낭비하지 않았으면 하고 이제 그 시간에 연습이나 하라고 피아노를 힐끗 바라본다. 그런데, 내가 원하는 답이 있고 없고를 떠나서 피아노 공부를 제대로 해 보겠다는 초보자가 음악의 그 어떤 이론이든 한 번쯤 들여다볼 생각을 하지 않는 것은 일단 자세가 바르지 않은 것 같다.
조성은 작곡가가 어떤 색깔의 곡을 쓰려했는지, 작곡가의 생각은 무엇인지를 알 수 있게 해 준다. 자, 내가 작곡을 한다고 상상해 보자. 어떤 느낌을 전달하려는 곡을 쓰고 싶은가? 동요처럼 밝고 화사한 곡, 애잔한 사랑 노래, 신나게 하고 싶은 활기차고 웅장한 곡, 바로 이러한 감정의 기초를 정하는 첫 단추가 조(key)가 된다. 작곡가는 왜 하필 그 키를 사용할까? 샵도 플랫도 없는 C장조로 일렬종대 통일하면 저 같은 초보자들에게 오죽이나 좋겠습니까만 왜 그걸 안 할까? 조성, 음정은 모두 인간의 만들어낸 소리를 표현하고자 한 것이니 순서는 이론이 먼저가 아니고 소리가 먼저임은 당연지사이고 그걸 체계적으로 정리해 놓은 것이 화성학 이론이다. 곡이 물 흐르듯 잘 흘러가다 조성을 벗어난 음을 만나면 뭔가 불편함을 재깍 알아채는 게 사람의 귀와 뇌이며 그걸 불협화음이라고 부른다 - 대장간의 망치질 소리에서 듣기 좋은 소리와 그렇지 않은 소리의 차이를 구분하는데서 음악 이론이 탄생하였다는 사실을 상기해 보면 됩니다 - 인간의 감각이 단순하다면 색상은 무지개 7색이면 충분하지만 아프리카 어느 부족은 무지개 색을 9개를 상식으로 부른다거나, 디자이너들이 색상에수십 가지의 이름을 붙여가며 색을 연구하지는 않았을 것입니다. 음악도 마찬가지고 모든 예술이 그렇다고 생각한다.
장조 곡(major)은 대체로 밝고 산뜻하다. 반면에 단조 곡 (minor)은 슬프고 어둡다. 좀 더 세분화하여 모든 조에서 오는 느낌을 정리한 자료는 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. (감정표현의 영어는 어렵다!) 물론 지극히 주관적이기에 모든 사람들이 비슷한 감정을 불러일으킨다고는 할 수 없을 것이지만 확률적으로 대부분의 사람들이 유사하게 떠올리는 감정일 것으로 생각한다. 다른 생각이 떠오르면 나 이상한 건가? 맞다. 이상한 거다. 하지만 오히려 남들과 다르고 평균에서 벗어나 있는 대단히 자유분방하고 창의적인 사람이라고도 생각한다.

D MINOR: Serious, Pious, Ruminating
Melancholy, feminine, brooding worries, contemplation of negativity.
E MAJOR: Quarrelsome, Boisterous, Incomplete Pleasure
Shouts of Joy, Complete Delight, yet Bickering, Short-fused, Ready to Fight.
E MINOR: Effeminate, Amorous, Restless
This key can carry grief, mournfulness, restlessness. Like a princess locked in a tower longing for her rescuer and future lover.
F MAJOR: Furious, Quick-Tempered, Passing Regret
Complaisance, Controlled calmness over the readiness to explode. Deeply angry but composed and sociable still. Religious sentiment.
F MINOR: Obscure, Plaintive, Funereal
Deepest depression, lament over death and loss, groans of misery, ready to expire. Harrowing. Melancholic.
G MAJOR: Serious, Magnificent, Fantasy
Rustic, Idyllic, Poetic, Lyrical. Calm and satisfied. Tenderness and Gratitude. Friendship and Faith. It is a gentle key full of peace.
G MINOR: Discontent, Uneasiness
Worry of the future, of a failed plan, gnashing of teeth. Concern over a failed plan. Struggling with dislike and malcontent.
A MAJOR: Joyful, Pastoral, Declaration of Love
Innocent Love, Satisfaction with the current state of affairs. Optimistic. Belief in Heaven and reuniting with lost loved ones. Youthful and cheerful. Trusting in the spirit of the divine.
A MINOR: Tender, Plaintive, Pious
Womanly, Graceful in character. Capable of soothing.
B MAJOR: Harsh, Strong, Wild, Rage
Uncontrolled passions. Angry, Jealous, Fury, Despair, Burdened with negative energy. Prepared to fight.

새로운 곡을 배우려 할 때 곡 분석을 먼저 시작하게 된다. 해당 곡에 대한 자료를 찾으면서 조(key), 조성(tonality), 조표(key signature), 장도(major key), 단조(minor key), 3화음(triad), 음정(interval), 음이름(note), 화음(chord)이 나올 때 무슨 얘기를 하는지 정도는 알아야 기초적인 곡 분석이 된다. 여기에 더하여 어떤 감정이 떠오르는지를 상상해 보는 것도 소소한 재미일 수 있을 듯하다. 나의 느낌과 같을 수도 있고 다를 수도 있겠지만연습하는 순간만큼은 잠시 작곡자로 빙의하여보는 것도 작품을 표현하는데 많은 도움이 될 것 같다.
