유럽과 미국은 왜 사과하지 않나?
가끔 제국주의와 관련된 책을 읽으면, 이런 생각이 든다. 나치가 유럽 사람들에게 저지른 만행을 사과하듯이, 유럽인과 미국인은 아시아와 아프리카, 아메리카의 주민들에게 자행한 범죄에 사과해야 한다고.
남아메리카에서 스페인 사람들이 벌인 만행은 끔찍하다. 고무나무의 수액을 얻기 위해 인디오 남자들을 잡아다가 일을 시키고 마구잡이로 죽였다.
일꾼이 부족해지자, 인디오 여자들을 가두고 임신할 때까지 강간했다. 아이가 태어나면 남자애는 일꾼으로 쓰고 여자애는 버렸다.
그래서 인디오의 한 부족은 여자들만 아마존 정글 깊이 도망을 갔다. 그들은 남자를 멀리 하고 여자끼리만 사는 전통을 세웠다. 그들이 바로 “아마조네스” 여전사의 모델이 되는 야르보 부족이다.
아시아에서 벌인 만행도 끔찍하다. 신사의 나라를 자처하는 영국은 “아편”을 들여와 청나라를 무너뜨렸다. 미국과 소련은 조선 사람들에게 묻지도 않고 나라를 반으로 갈라 아직도 우리에게 고통을 준다.
아프리카 사람들을 끌고 가 노예로 부린 일은 어떻고… 미국의 영토를 넓히기 위해 멕시코 사람들을 학살하고 멕시코의 영토였던 캘리포니아, 텍사스, 플로리다 지역을 19세기 모조리 장악했다.
이런 일에 대해서 유럽/ 미국인들은 왜 함구하고 있을까. 독일처럼 역사 시간에 학생들에게 계속 가르치고 앞으로 같은 잘못을 저지르지 않도록 노력해야하지 않을까?
Sometimes when I read books about imperialism, I wonder something. Just as the Germans apologize for the atrocities committed to Europeans, Europeans and Americans should apologize for the crimes committed against the residents of Asia, Africa, and America.
The atrocities committed by Spain in South America are terrible. In order to get the sap from the rubber tree, they caught the Indio men, made them work, and killed them recklessly.
When the number of workers became little, Indio women were locked up and raped until they became pregnant. When a child was born, the boy was used as a worker and the girl was abandoned.
So women of one tribe ran deep into the Amazon jungle. They established a tradition of staying away from men and living only with women. They are the Yarbo tribe, the model of the "Amazones" female warrior.
The atrocities committed in Asia are also terrible. Britain, which claims to be a gentleman's country, brought in "opium" and destroyed the Qing Dynasty. The United States and the Soviet Union still cause us pain by dividing Korea in half without asking the people of Joseon.
What about dragging African people and slaving them in USA? To expand the territory of the United States, it slaughtered Mexicans and took control of all of Mexico's territories- California, Texas, and Florida, in the 19th century.
Why are Europeans and Americans silent about this? Shouldn't they continue to teach students their crimes in history classes like Germany and try not to do the same thing in the future?
