경기도 과천은 관악산, 우면산, 청계산으로 둘러싸인 도시로 전통과 현대가 조화를 이루는
문화예술의 중심지입니다.
나무꾼놀이와 경기소리 등 무형문화재를 품은 예술인의 고장이기도 합니다.
이러한 지역적 특수성은 과천사료박물관의 정체성을 규정하는 중요한 기반이 됩니다.
과천사료박물관은 과천의 역사와 문화를 보존하고 이를 현재와 미래 세대가 함께 향유하도록 하는
문화적 허브로 기능합니다.
Nestled among Mt. Gwanak, Mt. Umyeon, and Mt. Cheonggye, Gwacheon harmoniously
blends natural beauty with a vibrant cultural spirit.
It is home to intangible cultural assets such as Namukkun Nori (Lumberjack Play) and
Gyeonggi Sori (Gyeonggi folk songs).
This distinctive regional character shapes the identity of the Gwacheon Archive Museum.
The museum preserves Gwacheon’s history and culture and serves as a cultural hub for
present and future generations.
설립과 발전 / Foundation and Growth
과천사료박물관은 2011년 과천향토사료관으로 출발하여 지역의 역사와 생활문화를 집대성해
왔습니다.
지속적인 연구, 전시, 교육 활동을 통해 지역 정체성을 강화했고 2023년 9월 경기도로부터 1종
전문박물관으로 승격되었습니다.
이 승격은 과천문화원의 오랜 노력과 성취를 보여주는 상징적 결과물로 미래지향적 문화기관으로
성장할 발판이 되었습니다.
Established in 2011 as the Gwacheon Local Archives, the museum has documented the
city’s history and everyday culture.
Through ongoing research, exhibitions, and educational programs, it strengthened local
identity and, in September 2023, was upgraded by Gyeonggi Province to a Type 1
Specialized Museum.
This milestone, enabled by the dedication of the Gwacheon Cultural Center, positions the
museum for forward-looking growth.
무형문화유산의 보고 – 줄타기 전승과 전시 / A Treasury of Intangible
Heritage – The Legacy of Jultagi
과천사료박물관의 대표 전시는 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 등재된 한국의
줄타기(2011)입니다.
전시실에는 줄타기 명인 고(故) 김영철 선생이 사용했던 실제 줄과 제자 김대균의 공연 모습을
형상화한 인형이 함께 전시되어 있습니다.
줄타기는 단순한 곡예가 아니라 노래, 춤, 재담, 풍자가 결합된 종합 공연예술로 관객과의 쌍방향
소통이 특징입니다.
A signature feature is the exhibition of Korean Tightrope Walking (Jultagi), inscribed on
UNESCO’s Representative List in 2011.
On display are the tightrope used by the late master Kim Young-cheol and a figurine
depicting a performance by his disciple Kim Dae-gyun.
Jultagi is not mere acrobatics but a comprehensive performing art that blends song,
dance, banter, and satire, characterized by interactive engagement with audiences.
무형문화유산 보호를 위한 지역사회의 비계(Scaffolding) / Institutional
Scaffolding for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage
과천사료박물관과 과천문화원은 무형문화유산의 지킴이이자 선구자로서 지역사회에서 중요한
비계(scaffolding) 역할을 수행합니다.
사료관에서 전문박물관으로 성장한 여정은 지역의 역사와 무형문화재가 제도적 문화적 기반
위에서 어떻게 꽃필 수 있는지를 보여줍니다.
이는 ICOM 두바이 2025의 주제인 빠르게 변화하는 지역사회에서의 박물관의 미래를 실천적으로
구현하는 사례입니다.
The Gwacheon Archive Museum and the Gwacheon Cultural Center act as guardians and
innovators, providing institutional scaffolding within the community.
The museum’s evolution from a local archive to a specialized museum demonstrates
how heritage flourishes with institutional and civic support.
This trajectory embodies the theme of ICOM Dubai 2025: the future of museums in
rapidly changing communities.
한국의 인류무형문화유산 네트워크와 과천의 역할 / Korea’s Intangible
Heritage Network and Gwacheon’s Role
한국은 종묘제례 및 제례악, 판소리, 강릉단오제, 남사당놀이, 김치와 김장문화, 제주해녀문화,
연등회, 씨름, 한국의 탈춤 등 23건의 인류무형문화유산을 보유하고 있습니다.
그 가운데 줄타기는 관객과의 소통을 핵심으로 한국인의 공동체적 정서와 해학 정신을 보여주는
유산입니다.
과천사료박물관은 이를 보존, 교육, 홍보하는 국제적 플랫폼으로 자리매김하고 있습니다.
Korea holds 23 elements on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list, including Jongmyo
Ancestral Rites and Music, Pansori, Gangneung Danoje Festival, Namsadang Nori,
Kimchi-making culture, Jeju Haenyeo, Lotus Lantern Festival, Ssireum, and Korean Mask
Dance Drama.
Among them, Jultagi is distinguished by its audience interaction, expressing communal
humor and resilience.
The museum serves as a global platform for the preservation, education, and promotion of
this heritage.
