Korean Dutch? Korean British?

EURO 2012

Last night, the Netherlands, one of the big favourites of Euro 2012, got out of the tournament at the group stage, far too much earlier than expected.

“Cheer up, mate. You know I’m a fan of those hopeless England, such lousy lads.”

I’ve just left a consoling message for a friend living in Amsterdam on the wall of his Facebook. But his timeline was showing that his heart had already been broken to tiny pieces. How odd! He’s no Dutch to feel so sorry about the early exit of the country. He’s a Korean by birth and he’s just living in the lowland.

What about me who supports the hopeless England? I’m nothing close to English. Although I’ve taken a degree course in the UK, that was in Cardiff, Wales. (Though Cardiff is only over a river from Bristol, England.) Possibly I've come to have a kind of sympathy for ‘Britain’ as a whole, since I’ve lived in the land of hope and glory for a substantial period of time.

Living in a certain place for a while gives one a new identity. Some of those living in a foreign country for a certain period of time even have a similar identity with that of indigenous people. Korean Americans or Korean Japanese are apt to speak and act very differently from those living in the motherland all along. They even seem to feel more at home as Americans or Japanese.

By the way, when it comes to a football match,  like Korea vs. Japan, it gets somewhat complicated. Largely it is history and ethnicity rather than current residence that matter in such a case. Therefore Korean Japanese are generally very supportive to Korean team in the rival matches.

However, Korean Chinese are not quite the same. Though they care as much about national identity and ethnicity as Korean Japanese do, a number of them tend to support China in such cases as Korea vs. China.

Korea is in the Far East as it’s considered extremely far from Europe. However it’s a small world after all as Koreans all over the world are enjoying the European football feast passionately engaging themselves even with some identity factors.

I’m just curious in what country Koreans are most enthusiastic in supporting the country they’re living in.

형편없고 가망도 없는 잉글랜드 팬이라는 나는 또 어떠한가? 나 또한 잉글랜드 사람이 전혀 아니다. 영국에서 유학을 하기는 했지만, 실은 그것도 잉글랜드가 아닌 웨일즈 카디프에서였다. 물론 잉글랜드 브리스톨에서 강만 하나 건너면 웨일즈 카디프이기는 하지만.. 정리하자면, 그 ‘희망과 영광의 나라’에 일정기간 살면서 대충 영국 전체에 대한 유대감이 생겼달까..

한곳에 오래 살면 새로운 정체성이 생긴다. 외국에 가서 일정기간 살다 보면 현지인과 비슷한 정체성이 형성되기 마련이다. 재미동포나 재일동포들의 말이나 행동은 한국에서 죽 산 사람들과 비교해 볼 때 아무래도 꽤 다르기 십상이다. 심지어 미국인이나 일본인이라 생각할 때 더 편한 경우마저 있다.

그런데 이 모든 일이 그렇게 간단하지 않다. 축구 한일전 같은 경우 재일동포들은 심사가 매우 복잡해진다. 이 경우 크게 작용하는 것은 역사와 민족 문제 같은 것이다. 그래서 한일전의 경우 재일동포들은 흔히 한국을 응원하곤 한다.

그러나 재중동포의 경우는 좀 다르다. 재중동포들이 재일동포들만큼 민족 문제에 관심을 많이 갖는다고 해도, 한중전의 경우 오히려 적잖은 이들이 중국을 응원한다고 한다.

한국은 유럽에서 지극히 멀어 극동이라고 불린다. 그러나 전세계에 흩어져 사는 많은 한국인들이 나름의 정체성 요소를 갖고 이 유럽의 축구제전을 마음껏 즐기는 것을 보면, 결국 세상은 참으로 좁기만 하다고 하겠다.

어느 나라에 사는 한국 사람들이 각기 자기가 사는 나라를 가장 열정적으로 응원할지 정말 궁금하다.
