The Epistle of Seungdon to the Japanese
Hello. My name is Seungdon Choi. I am a broadcaster (an announcer in Korean and Japanese) working at Korean Broadcasting System, KBS, which is a public broadcaster like NHK in Japan and BBC in Britain. I am extremely happy to meet you from all around the world here at the beautiful campus of ICU. I came to Tokyo yesterday as a Samil Church member for a week-long Christian mission trip.
안녕하십니까? 제 이름은 최승돈입니다. 저는 일본의 NHK, 영국의 BBC와 같은 공영방송, KBS에서 일하고 있는 아나운서입니다. 아름다운 ICU 캠퍼스에서 세계 각국에서 오신 여러분들을 만나게 됨을 참으로 기쁘게 생각합니다. 저는 삼일교회 선교대원으로 일주일간의 기독교 단기 선교를 위해 어제 도쿄에 왔습니다.
A couple of weeks ago, I received an e-mail from Japan asking why I would come to Japan for a mission trip, even though I might have taken a lot of anti-Japanese education. (Actually Koreans do not take anti-Japanese education at school. Koreans only deal with the truth of history.) It is true that Korea and Japan have not enjoyed the very best relationship with each other for a long time, although both the countries are geographically close. And it is also true that all the Korean people, more or less, have ill feelings against Japan, owing to the bitter and regrettable history between the two countries.
몇 주 전 저는, 한국에서 반일교육을 많이 받았을 사람이 왜 일본으로 선교를 오는지를 묻는 이메일을 받았습니다. (사실 한국사람들이 학교에서 반일 교육을 받지는 않습니다. 한국인들은 오직 역사의 진실을 다룰 뿐입니다.) 한국과 일본이 지리적으로 가까운 나라임에도 불구하고 오랜 세월 좋은 관계를 유지하지 못한 것은 틀림없는 사실입니다. 또 가슴 아픈 역사적 사실로 인해 많은 한국인들이 일본인들에 대해 적잖이 악감정을 가지고 있는 것도 사실입니다.
Even though here I am in Japan now, I would like to make it very clear that I don't have any intention to yield or concede in historic or political terms, not even a single step. Koreans have suffered too much to yield or to concede in the matters of history and politics, without any proper official apology yet from the Japanese government. Then, why did I come to Japan, even for a mission trip? Delivering good news to evil Japanese?
저는 지금 일본에 와 있음에도 불구하고, 역사적, 정치적으로는 단 한 발자국도 물러서거나 양보할 뜻이 없음을 밝혀 두고자 합니다. 한국인들은 아직 일본 정부의 충분한 공식 사과도 받지 못한 채 양보하거나 물러서기에는 너무도 큰 고통을 당해 왔기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 저는 왜, 그것도 선교를 위해서 일본에 왔을까요? 흉악한 일본 사람들에게 좋은 소식(복음)을 전한다는 게 말이나 됩니까?
In fact, I had very few options this time. For 3 years I have regularly taken part in the mission trips to Taiwan. The relationship between Korea and Taiwan is much more enjoyable than that of Korea and Japan, and for last 3 years I have made lots of dear Taiwanese friends in Taipei. 'Oh, how much do I miss my beloved Taiwanese pengyoumen!' However, God forbade me from going to Taiwan this summer. The fact is that my work schedule for the Olympic Games in Beijing just clashes with the schedule of the Taiwanese mission trip this summer.
사실 이번에는 선택의 여지가 거의 없었습니다. 저는 지난 3년 동안 대만 선교에 매번 참여해 왔습니다. 한국과 대만의 관계는 한일관계에 비해 무척 좋은 관계이며, 지난 3년 동안 저는 타이베이에서 많은 대만 친구를 사귀어왔던 것입니다. '아! 너무도 보고 싶은 나의 대만 친구들!' 그러나 올여름엔 하나님께서 제가 대만에 가는 것을 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 올여름엔 베이징 올림픽 중계방송 일정과 대만 선교 일정이 정확히 겹쳤기 때문입니다.
I was sad very much that I cannot come to Taiwan this summer, but soon afterwards I began to seek another mission trip that I could join, which was this mission trip to Japan. Although I might be less happy at the moment than to be in Taiwan, I am full of joy and hope eagerly looking forward to seeing what God has prepared in Japan.
이번엔 대만에 갈 수 없다는 사실을 알고 저는 매우 슬펐지만, 이내 제가 참여할 수 있는 다른 선교 일정을 찾기 시작했고, 결국 선택하게 된 것이 바로 이 일본 선교였던 것입니다. 비록 대만에 가지 못하는 현실에 일순간 좌절했던 것도 사실이지만, 지금 저는 하나님께서 일본에 예비해 놓으신 은혜를 기대하면서 기쁨과 희망으로 가득 차 있습니다.
As a Korean citizen I am still hesitant, though. However, there is something that makes me extremely happy to come to this country. It is my double citizenship. Great apostle, Paul said in Philippians 3:20, "Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." As Paul said my citizenship is in heaven as well as on earth. No matter how uneasy I feel it to be in Japan as a Korean citizen, I can be happy more than enough to deliver good news here in this country to those who would be my compatriots, my fellow citizens in heaven by believing our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
한국사람으로서 제게는 여전히 껄끄러움이 있습니다. 그러나 제가 이 나라에 온 것을 너무도 기뻐하게 하는 무엇인가가 있습니다. 그것은 바로 저의 또 다른 국적입니다. 위대한 사도 바울은 빌립보서 3장 20절을 통해 '그러나 우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있는지라 거기로부터 구원하는 자 곧 주 예수 그리스도를 기다리노니'라 말씀하였습니다. 이 이야기에 따르면, 제 시민권은 땅에도 있지만 하늘에도 있는 것입니다. 제가 한국 사람으로서 일본에 와 느끼게 되는 마음의 불편함은 여전하지만, 이 나라에서 우리 구주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로써 결국은 같은 천국의 시민권을 누리게 될, 결국은 같은 나라 사람이 될 많은 이들에게 복음을 마음껏 전할 수 있으니 저는 기쁘고도 남음이 있는 것입니다.
Someone may say, "What if I don't believe the Bible? How can you assure me that your citizenship is in heaven without any visible evidence? Seeing is believing. That's what everybody says, isn't it?" In response I would like to quote Saint Exupery as saying in 'Le Petit Prince', "What is essential is invisible to the eyes." Just as the fox in the story says, "the secret is very simple" All you should do is to see what is essential rightly with your heart and believe, which will lead you to a totally new life in Christ.
어떤 사람은 '내가 성경을 믿지 않는다면 어떻게 하겠느냐? 당신은 어떻게 눈에 보이는 아무런 증거도 없이 당신의 천국 시민권을 이야기할 수 있느냐? 백문이 불여일견이다. 다들 그렇게 얘기하지 않느냐?'며 반문할지 모릅니다. 저는 생텍쥐페리의 '어린 왕자' 중 '가장 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않는다'는 얘기를 인용하며 대답하고 싶습니다. 책 속의 여우가 이야기하듯 '비결은 아주 간단합니다'. 지금 여러분이 해야 할 일은 가장 중요한 것을 마음으로 정확히 보고 믿는 것입니다. 그렇게 하면 당신은 그리스도 안에서 새 삶을 살게 될 것입니다.
In 2nd Corinthians (4:18), Paul also said, "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Everybody seeks as many visible evidences as possible for their knowledge. But the wise clearly know that visible evidences are not always enough and, what is more, what is essential is invisible to our eyes.
사도 바울은 고린도후서 4장 18절 말씀을 통해 '우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라'고 말하였습니다. 모든 사람들은 지식을 구하면서 눈에 보이는 증거를 되도록 많이 얻고자 노력합니다. 그러나 지혜로운 사람은 눈에 보이는 증거가 늘 충분한 것만은 아니라는 사실을 명확히 알고 있습니다. 게다가 가장 중요한 것은 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다는 사실도...
Have you heard of Jesus? Surely you have. Who is Jesus? Jesus is the son of God. Then who is God? He is the One that created the world. He not only loves the world in large but also loves each and every one of you in person. However, all (men) have sinned and fall short of Glory of God.(Romans 3:23) So no one can go to heaven and enjoy the Glory of God. There is a way though. Jesus, son of God, came to this world and delivered us from sin by being crucified as a sacrifice, although he himself had not sinned at all. He died but rose again to give us the hope that we may also rise again like Him. Once you believe Jesus, you can certainly go to heaven and share the Glory of God. By the way, what is your response to this wonderful offer of life?
예수님에 대해 들어 보셨습니까? 아무렴 들어 보셨겠지요. 예수님은 어떤 분이십니까? 예수님은 하나님의 아들이십니다. 그렇다면 하나님은 어떤 분이십니까? 하나님은 이 세상을 창조하신 분이시지요. 하나님께서는 이 세상을 사랑하실 뿐만 아니라, 이 가운데 있는 한 사람 한 사람을 일일이 다 사랑해 주십니다. 그러나 모든 사람이 죄를 범함으로써 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하게 되었습니다. (로마서 3:23) 그래서 그 누구도 천국에 가지 못하게 되었으며 하나님의 영광을 누리지 못하게 되었습니다. 그러나 방법은 있습니다. 하나님의 아들이신 예수님께서 이 세상에 오시고 십자가 위에서 희생을 당하심으로써 우리를 구원해 주셨습니다. 정작 그분께는 아무 죄도 없었는데 말입니다. 예수님은 돌아가셨지만, 다시 살아나셨습니다. 이는 우리들도 그분처럼 부활할 수 있다는 사실을 보여주는 것입니다. 일단 예수님을 믿기만 하면 당신은 틀림없이 천국에 가게 될 것이며 하나님의 영광을 누릴 수 있을 것입니다. 그런데 이처럼 놀라운 생명의 부르심에 대한 당신의 대답은 무엇입니까?
I came to Japan to deliver such good news to those who would listen and believe. Believe it or not, there can be nothing more essential than this matter of life and death, although it is not so clearly seen before your very own eyes.
저는 이같이 좋은 소식을 듣고 믿을 사람들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 일본에 왔습니다. 믿든지 믿지 않든지, 비록 우리 눈앞에 분명히 보이지는 않을지 몰라도, 이처럼 생사가 걸린 문제보다 더욱 중요한 문제는 없을 것입니다.
I remember Jonah who, at first, protested the God's order to go to Nineveh, the abominable enemies' capital. Surprisingly enough, he went to Tarshish in the opposite direction to the city God had appointed. During the tempest, he was thrown down deep into the sea. A big fish swallowed him up to keep him alive in its belly and he was finally vomited up onto the dry land to finally follow God's order to go to the enemies' capital. The city was so big that a fair visit required at least three days. However, a miracle occurred on the very first day of Jonah's mission trip. Every single citizen of the city, even the king, declared a fast and turned from their evil ways.
생각만 해도 진저리가 쳐지는 적국의 수도 니느웨로 가라는 하나님의 명령을 어겼던 요나를 기억합니다. 놀랍게도 요나는 하나님께서 가라고 하신 니느웨의 정확히 반대쪽에 있는 다시스를 향해 갑니다. 폭풍이 부는 가운데 요나는 깊은 바닷속에 던져졌지만, 큰 물고기가 그를 삼켜 그는 물고기 뱃속에서 죽지 않고 살아남게 되었고, 결국 물고기는 그를 마른땅에 토해내게 되었으며, 결국 요나는 하나님의 명령대로 적국의 수도, 니느웨를 향해 가게 됩니다. 니느웨 곳곳을 두루 다니려면 족히 사흘은 걸립니다. 그러나 요나의 선교 여행 바로 첫날 기적이 일어났습니다. 니느웨의 모든 사람, 심지어 왕까지 금식을 선언하고 악한 행실로부터 돌이켜 회개하였던 것입니다.
I didn't come to Japan with grudge in my heart. Rather I came here with love that God has given me, dreaming something like the miracle of Jonah, in which the people of Japanese capital turn from sinful past to start a wholly new life by believing Jesus Christ as our saviour. This is something that is so urgent and essential. It leaves very little room for quarreling over current affairs.
저는 원한을 품고 일본에 오지 않았습니다. 오히려 저는 하나님께서 주신 사랑을 품고 왔으며, 일본의 수도인 도쿄의 시민들이 예수님을 구주로 믿음으로써 과거의 죄악으로부터 돌이켜 전적으로 새로운 삶을 시작하는, 요나의 기적 속에서 보았던 일과 같은 놀라운 일을 꿈꾸고 있습니다. 이 일은 참으로 시간을 다투는 일이며 중요한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 세상 각종 문제에 대해 갑론을박을 벌일 여유가 우리에게는 없습니다.
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.
The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.
All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on the LORD.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.
Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

어리석은 자는 그의 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 없다 하는도다 그들은 부패하고 그 행실이 가증하니 선을 행하는 자가 없도다
여호와께서 하늘에서 인생을 굽어살피사 지각이 있어 하나님을 찾는 자가 잇는가 보려 하신즉
다 치우쳐 함께 더러운 자가 되고 선을 행하는 자가 없으니 하나도 없도다
죄악을 행하는 자는 다 무지하냐 그들이 떡 먹듯이 내 백성을 먹으면서 여호와를 부르지 아니하는도다
