쇼디치 비영리 미술 기관 외근, 실험적 전시들

이날은 오랜만에 큐레토리얼 팀 다 같이 전시 보러 외출했다. 갔던 곳은 비영리 전시기관 Raven row.
텅텅 버려진 집 같던 전시 장소. 공간 활용하기 무궁무진하다 싶었다. 이렇게 티비 하나랑 소파 덜렁 둔 것도 오히려 좋음.
영국에 이런 티비 프로그램이 있었더라. 이 프로그램을 다시 보는 취지의 전시였다.
BBC – the Community Programme Unit (CPU). Set up in 1972, the CPU provided a camera crew and studio, and handed over complete editorial control, to groups and individuals with ‘voices, attitudes and opinions’ hitherto ‘unheard or seriously neglected’, so they could make their own programmes.
Several hundred campaigning and community groups, and individuals, representing amongst myriad others anarchists, farm workers, Black teachers, women priests, office cleaners, radical housing associations, trans women, ex-cons, situationists, film co-ops, neurodiverse people, freethinkers and channelers of the extra-terrestrial, produced autonomous material that was broadcast on BBC2 between 1973 and 1983 in a series called Open Door.

점심때는 다 같이 비건 식당. 스칸디나비안 비건 식당이었는데 다 맛있었다. 이런 계획은 늘 우리 미술관의 interpreataion 팀이 이끈다. 한국에서도 왠지 통상 미술관 교육팀이 사람들이랑 두루두루 친하고 좀 외향적인 경향이 있었는데 (직무와 성격이 연결 지어 이해되는 건 말할 것도 없음), 울 팀에서도 관객과의 접점을 생각하는 interpreataion 팀이 늘 팀 내 이런 활동을 리드한다.
나머지 오후 동안에 일할 곳을 찾아 타워 오브 런던 근처 스타벅스로 향했다.

이날은 오후에 친구 보러 버밍엄으로 떠나는 날이었다. 유스턴에서 타는 기차라 근처에 온 김에 웰컴 컬렉션도 들렸다. 이번엔 한 층을 나눠서 두 개의 전시를 하더라. 하나는 래디컬 한 전시, 다른 하나는 매우 실험적인 전시.
먼저 British-Kenyan visual artist Grace Ndiritu의 Healing Pavilion.
마주 보며 전시된 두 태피스트리는 각각 웰컴 컬렉션과 베를린 민속 박물관 스태프들의 기록 사진을 대형으로 프린팅 한 것이었다. 각각 사진 제목이 Repair (1915)’ 와 ‘Restitution (1973)라고 한다. 이 두 기록을 가져오면서 서구 중심 박물관학을 비판하고 유럽 미술관 컬렉션에 소장된 아프리칸 오브젝트들을 어떻게 바라보고 실천해야 할지 얘기하고자 했다.
They ask what has changed since these photographs were taken and reveal violent pasts and hidden power dynamics at the foundation of Western museology, while reflecting attitudes and practices towards African objects in many European museum collections.
두 번째는 Objects in Stereo.
‘Objects in Stereo’ encourages us to look closely at museum objects usually hidden from view. It reminds us of the complex relationship between seeing and understanding materials in museums’ collections.
