베를린 '소니센터'

건축가 김종성 선생님이 추천해주신 곳

지난 4일부터 10일까지 독일 베를린을 다녀왔다. 유럽 최대 가전, IT 전시회라고 불리는 'IFA'를 취재하기 위해서였다. 베를린은 딱 5년 만이다. 2014년에도 9월 추석 연휴를 끼고 베를린 출장을 간 적이 있다. 당시는 미국 뉴욕을 거쳐 영국 런던-독일 베를린-프랑크푸르트-뒤셀도르프까지 이어지는 일정이라 베를린에 머문 시간은 하루 밖에 되지 않아 베를린을 충분히 보지 못해 아쉬움이 있었다. 이번에도 그렇게 여유가 있는 일정은 아니었지만 5년 전 출장 보다는 시간이 있어 가기 전에 무엇을 볼지 고민을 했다. 독일을 잘 알고 계시는 건축가 김종성 선생님께도 볼만한 건축물 추천을 부탁드렸다. 아래는 선생님께서 추천해주신 곳들이다.

옛 서베를린에 있는 Neue Nationalgalerie, Philharmonie (베를린 필하모닉 의 연주 홀), 국립도서관, Sony Center, Technische Hochschule (TU) Berlin

옛 동베를린으로 와서 “Museuminsel” 이라고 부루는 지역에 Altes Museum, Neues Museum, 그리스 신전 박물관, 앗시리아 유적 박물관, Holocaust Museum, 신 베를린 철도 터미날, Jewish Memorial, Humboldt University 등

시간이 있으면, 교외 Potsdam

이 중 절반 정도는 보고 왔는데 그 중에 첫 번째로 찾은 곳은 '소니센터'였다. 숙소인 아드론 캠펜스키 호텔에서 멀지 않은 곳에 위치했기 때문이다. 소니센터는 한국에도 잘 알려진 건축물이다. 국민연금이 투자해서 큰 수익을 낸 자산이기 때문이다. 국민연금은 2010년께 당시 시장 상황이 썩 좋지 않을 때 소니센터에 투자했다가 이후 베를린이 크게 좋아지면서 약 7,000억원 정도의 수익을 남겼다고 한다.

소니센터는 103m 높이의 초고층 건축물 반 타워를 비롯해 모두 일곱 개의 건물로 이뤄져 있다. 국제회의를 위한 콘퍼런스 센터와 고급 호텔, 콘도, 사무실 , 쇼핑몰 등으로 구성되어 있다.소니가 투자했으며, 독일계 미국인 건축가 헬무트 얀(Helmut Jahn)이 설계했다고 했다. 완공 시기는 2000년이다.

아래 사진에서 보이는 소니센터 광장을 덮고 있는 돔 모양은 일본의 후지산을 상징한다고 한다.

소니센터가 서 있는 곳은 과거 베를린 장벽이 서 있던 포츠다머 플라츠(Potsdamer Platz)다. 이 지역에 대해서는 출장을 다녀와서 구글로 찾아봤다.

The site was originally a bustling city centre in the early 20th century. During World War II, it was the location of the infamous Nazi People's Court. Most of the buildings were destroyed or damaged during World War II. From 1961 on, most of the area became part of the No Man's Land of the Berlin Wall, resulting in the destruction of the remaining buildings. After the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the square became the focus of attention again, as a large (some 60 hectares), attractive location which had suddenly become available in the centre of a major European capital city. As part of a redevelopment effort for the area, the space was constructed. The space was designed by Helmut Jahn and Peter Walker as landscape architect and construction was completed in 2000 at a total cost of €750M. In February 2008 Sony sold Berlin's Sony Center for less than €600M to a group of German and US investment funds, including investment bank Morgan Stanley, Corpus Sireo and an affiliate of The John Buck Company. The group sold the Sony Center to the National Pension Service of South Korea for €570M in 2010.
