많은 사람들이 영어를 잘 구사하고 싶어합니다. 영어를 배우기 위해서 시도하기도 하죠. 한국사람들만 그런 것은 아닙니다.
Many people want to speak English better and try to learn it, which is not just about Korean.
어떤 사람은 조금 더 빠르게 영어를 배우는 것처럼 보이고 다른 사람들은 진도가 느린 것처럼 보이기도 합니다.
Some people seem like learning English faster than others do not.
그러나 영어를 비롯한 외국어를 배울 때 변하지 않는 사실이 있습니다.
But there are several facts that have been never changed in reference to learning a new language including English.
시간이 필요하죠. 아무리 재능이 뛰어난 사람이라도 단어를 정복하지 않고 영어를 잘 할 수는 없습니다.
It requires time. No matter how smart he or she is, one couldn't speak English fluently without conquering the vocabulary.
영어를 배우기 위해서 우리가 해야 할 것들
읽기, 듣기, 쓰기, 말하기, 문법, 단어, 할 것들이 넘쳐나죠.
Including reading, listening, speaking, grammr and vocabulary, there are a bunch of things to reach English.
고로, 영어를 빠르게 배운다는 건 얼마나 효율적으로 시간을 사용하느냐에 달려있을지 모릅니다.
Then, it may depend on how efficient we organize our time to learn English faster.
우리는 쉽게 영어를 개선하고 싶은 유혹에 빠지기 쉽죠.
We are apt to be tempted into improving English easily.
마치 빠르게 배우기만 하면 될 것처럼 될 것처럼요.
Like it is all about learning English fast.
빠르기보다 견고함(robustness instead of speed)
그러나, 빠르기보다 중요한 것은 견고함입니다.
However, it is the robustness of English, instead of speed.
나는 가끔 해야 할 말이 생각나지 않아서 멈추곤 합니다.
From time to time, I stopped to remind the word which I wanted to express.
그리고 사전을 찾아보죠.
Then I look up the word on the dictionary.
아주 가끔은 이미 내가 잘 안다고 생각했던 단어가 기억나지 않아서 놀라곤 합니다.
Less frequently, I am surprised because I couldn't remember the word I though I'd remembered.
그건 아는 것이 아닌 것이죠.
That doesn't mean that I knew the word.
내가 안다고 생각했지만 사실은 알지 않았던 것들이 많습니다.
Things, which I thought I knew but I didn't, abound.
자신이 아는 것과 모르는 것을 정확하게 구분하기 위해서 노력할 필요가 있습니다.
We need to distinguish what we know from what we don't know exactly.
자기가 아는 것과 알지 못하는 것 구분하기
자기가 아는 단어를 떠올려 보세요.
Remind a word that you think you know.
그 단어로 문장을 만들려고 해보세요.
Try to make a sentence with the word.
만들 수 있습니까?
Can you do it?
만약 어려움을 느낀다면, 사전을 찾아보세요. 많은 예문이 있습니다.
If you have difficulty in this, look them up on the dictionary, there are a bunch of sample sentences.
예문을 읽어보세요.
Read them.
그리고 그 단어로 다른 문장을 만들어보세요.
And try to make another sentence with the word.
모든 단어를 이런 방식으로 다시 정의할 필요가 있습니다.
We need to redefine every single word we have already memorized.
Mean이라는 단어를 아시나요?
예를 들어 여러분은 아마도 'mean'이라는 단어를 알 것입니다.
For example, we may know the term of 'mean'.
'mean'은 여러 뜻을 가지고 있죠.
'Mean' has several different meanings.
1) 의미하다
mean은 종종 imply, refer to, represent, designate 동사와 유사한 의미로 사용되곤 합니다.
Sometimes, 'mean' can be changable into the verb like imply, refer to, represent, and designate.
2) 잔인한
그런데 mean은 잔인하다는 뜻도 있죠.
By the way, mean has the meaning of cruel, or callus.
3) be meant to
mean은 수동태로 사용되면 '계획되다'라는 뜻으로 사용되기도 한다.
With passive form, mean may imply the meaning of 'planning'
예) 나는 두시에 그를 만나기로 했다.
E.g. I was meant to meet him at two.
4) 수단
mean에 s가 붙으면 수단이라는 뜻을 가집니다.
If mean has 's', it means 'method'.
예) 그녀는 그의 아내가 될 수 없었다. 그는 방법이 없었다. 그들은 그와 그녀가 결혼하도록 놔두지 않았다.
She could not be his wife, that he had no means, and they would never let her marry him.
5) 평균
mean은 평균이라는 뜻도 있습니다.
Either, mean refers to average.
마찬가지로, mean 하나에도 이렇게 다양한 용법과 의미가 있습니다.
Likewise, the word of mean has so many meanings and usages.
영어를 공부할 때는 스스로에게 이렇게 묻는 습관을 가져보는 것을 추천합니다.
Then, learning English, it is highly recommended to ask....
내가 정말 알고 있는가?
if I really am aware of this and
내가 이 단어를 활용할 수 있는가?
if I can utilize the word.
활용할 수 있다면, 활용하세요.
If you can use it, use it.
만약 그렇지 않다면, 검색하고 연습하세요.
If you are not capable of, look up and practice them.
그리고 반복하세요.
And reiterate.
잘 될때까지. 그러면 잘 될겁니다.
Until it works out. Then, it'll work out.
