(2) 예시의 연결사: For example, For instance

예시의 연결사도 문제를 푸는데 중요한 key가 된다. <2강>에서도 설명했듯이, 글의 구조중에는 <주제-예시>로 연결되는 지문이 많은데, 예시의 연결사가 나오면 앞에 주제가 이미 나왔다는 단서가 된다. 이런 요령은 특히 <주장, 요지, 주제, 제목>에서 주제문을 찾는 시간을 확~~ 줄여주는 비법이 된다.

-> 첫번째 문장에서 '상식은 장점도 있지만 약점도 있다'라고 분명하게 표현한다. 그리고 나서 다시 예시의 연결사가 나오며 '끼리끼리 모인다'라는 속담이 사실일 수도 있지만, 서로 다른 사람들로 끌릴 수 있다는 것을 예로 들고 있다. 이처럼 두번째 문장부터 바로 구체적인 예시로 이어질 경우 첫번째 문장이 주제문임이 명확해진다. (=두괄식 지문)

-> 연결사 앞의 문장 '로봇을 공장에 도입하는 것은 걱정과 두려움을 만들어내기 때문에 그것을 예방하는 것이 관리의 책무이다'가 이글의 주제문이다. 예시로는 어떻게 구체적으로 로봇에 대한 두려움을 예방할지가 서술되고 있다.

이러한 주제-예시의 두괄식 지문은 빈칸 문제에서도 자주 출제된다. 예시의 연결사 앞이 주제문이므로 이 자리에 빈칸이 비워지고, 예시를 읽고 역으로 주제문을 추론해야한다.

-> 연결사 앞의 주제문의 일부분에 빈칸을 비워 빈칸 문제로 출제하였다. 주제문은 '꿀벌 군집의 입구를 연구하는 것은 지엽적인 정보에 반응하여 그 자신의 행동을 바꾸는 개인들이 어떻게 '군집이 군집의 노동력을 어떻게 조절하도록 허용하는지'에 대한 수많은 예시를 제공한다'라는 문장이며, 뒷 부분의 구체적인 예시가 이를 뒷받침한다. 주제문도 어렵고, 예시도 바로 이해하기 쉽지 않은 어려운 문제이므로 빈칸 유형으로 출제되었다.

그러나 20,22,23,24번 문제 유형에서는 이러한 예시의 연결사가 있으면 주제문 찾기가 비교적 수월해지다 보니, 최근의 수능에서는 예시의 연결사 없이 바로 예시로 넘어가는 지문이 자주 나오기도 한다.

예를 들어, 다음과 같은 문제를 보면,

Reduction or elimination of these factors may require societal action, such as public awareness and public health measures.(주제문) In many countries,(구체적인 예시로 넘어감) the fact that some environmental hazards are difficult to avoid at the individual level is felt to be more morally egregious than those hazards that can be avoided.

-> for example이라는 연결사 없이 바로 '많은 나라에서는' 이라는 부사구로 시작하며 예시로 바로 넘어가는 지문이다. 따라서 그 앞의 문장인 '이러한 요소의 감소나 제거는 사회적 행동을 요구할지도 모른다'가 이 글의 주제이다. (1번: '개인이 피하기 어려운 유해 환경 요인에 대해서는 사회적 대응이 필요하다'가 답이었다.)

2. 예시의 연결사가 나온다면, 그 앞의 문장을 주제문으로 잡는다.

3. 예시의 연결사가 없더라도, 추상적 내용에서 구체적으로 넘어가는 문장을 찾고 그 앞의 문장을 주제문으로 잡는다.
