가장 무서운 순간은 항상 당신이 그것을 시작하기 바로 직전이다.
그 이후 모든 상황은 더 나을 수밖에 없다.

예전에 인터넷 서점에선가 아니면 어떤 책에선가 이 책을 추천받은 적이 있었다.
한국에서는 유혹하는 글쓰기로.
스티븐 킹 작가 책을 읽어본 적은 없고 또 영화도 찾아본 적은 없지만
이상하게 이름을 알고 있었다.
많은 호러 영화의 원작자라고 알고 있었다.
예전에 대학생 때였던가 고등학생 때였던가
그 당시에 대부분의 영미 영화는 번역가가 통일되어 있었다.
영화가 끝나고 자막이 모두 올라가면
마지막에 뜨는 자막이 "번역 이미도"였다.
그분은 여자일까 남자일까 항상 생각했었다.
그분의 수필을 읽어보니 남자로 결론 내렸다.
[나의 영어는 영화관에서 시작됐다]라는 책을 통해 스티븐 킹의 영화를 조금 맛볼 수 있었다.
스티븐 킹의 책 [The body]를 소개하는 내용이 인상 깊어서 스티븐 킹의 글에 대해 호감을 갖게 되었다.
그러나 책을 찾아보지는 않았었다.
수년의 세월이 흐른 후 [유혹하는 글쓰기]를 주문을 하고 읽기 시작했는데 글쓰기에 대한 이야기인가 했더니 어렸을 적 보모와 관련된 이상한(나의 관점에서) 에피소드나 이야기하고 있고 또 번역하다 보니 스티븐 킹의 글 솜씨가 제대로 드러나지도 않고 말투도 이상하고 재미가 없어서 덮어버렸었다.
그렇게 책장에 오래 있던 책을 언젠가 중고 서점에 팔았었다.
그리고 또 몇 년이 흐른 후 다른 책에서 이 책을 인용하는 구절을 보고 다시 읽어보고 싶어졌다.
원서 독서 모임에 책 추천 요청을 받았고 몇 권의 책을 추천했는 데 다른 것은 다 탈락하고 이 책이 선정되었다. 선정되면 나도 다시 읽어볼까 하는 마음이었다.
그렇게 다시 이 책을 시작했다. 이번에는 원서로.
강제성이 있으니 역시나 끝을 보게 되었다.
예전에 읽었던 내용이 새록새록 살아났다.
그 문화 특유의 또는 재치 있는 말이 들어있는 데 이방인인 나는 이해하기 힘든 부분도 좀 있었다.
그러려니 하고 넘겼다.
스티븐 킹은 다작의 사람이었다.
마약이나 술에 취해있던 적도 있었고 또 큰 교통사고를 겪은 적도 있었다.
그 옆에는 항상 그를 지지해 주고 솔직하게 의견을 주는 아내가 있었다.
끊임없이 독서를 하고 또 글을 쓰는, 또 글 쓰는 것을 아주 좋아하는 사람이었다.
그가 생각하는 뮤즈는 시가를 물고 있는 아저씨라는 점이 참 재미있었다.
그는 존재한다. 단 당신이 항상 열심히 또 성실하게 글을 쓰는 모습을 보여줘야 나타난다.
I'm not trying to get you to talk dirty, only plain and direct. Remember that the basic rule of vocabulary is use the first word that comes to your mind, if it is appropriate and colorful.
These are the really good writers. Above them-above almost all of us-are the Shakespeares, the Faulkners, the Yeatses, Shaws, and Eudora Weltys. They are geniuses, divind accidents, gifted in a way which is beyond our ability to understand, let alone attain.
The first is that good writing consists of mastering the fundamentals(vocabulary, grammar, the elements of style) and then filling the third level of your toolbox with the right instruments.
But you need the room, you need the door, and you need the determination to shut the door. You need a concrete goal, as well. The longer you keep to these basics, the easier the act of writing will become. Don't wait for the muse. As I've said, he's a heardheaded guy who's not susceptible to a lot of creative fluttering. This isn't the Ouija board or the spirit-world we're talking about here, but just another job like laying pipe or driving long-haul trucks. Your job is to make sure the muse knows where you're going to be every day from nine 'til noon or seven 'til three. If he does know, I assure you that sooner or later he'll start showing up, chomping his cigar and aking his magic.
I distrust plot for two reasons: first, because our lives are largely plotless, even when you add in all our reasonable precautions and careful planning; and second, because I believe plotting and the spontaneity of real creation aren't compatible.
이 부분을 읽으면서 그런 생각이 들었다. 영화나 드라마를 보면 인물의 행동에 꼭 동기가 있고 하나하나의 사건이 다 연결되고 일관성이 있게끔 짜여 있고 또 관객도 그런 것을 바라는데 실제 삶에 그런 것이 꼭 있나 싶다. 꼭 모든 일들이 떡밥이 다 던지고 줍는 일인가 싶다. 세상을 살다 보면 연계성이 없거나 우연한 일도 일어나기 마련이고 또 사람의 성격이 물론 사람의 성격은 바뀌지 않는다는 말도 맞지만 어느 날은 이런 행동을 하고 싶어질 수도 있고 또 상황에 따라서 마음이 변할 수도 있기 마련이다. 그 사람의 행동을 확실히 결정지을 수 있을 것인가. 또 한 사람이 항상 일관된 태도와 성격을 보이는 가도 미심쩍다. 따라서 그런 인공적인 매체들이 얼마나 삶을 닮아있을 수 있을까 하는 생각이 들었다.
I think the best stories always end up being about the people rather than the event, which is to say character-driven.
"You should submit on a good grade of white bond paper-none of that slippery erasable stuff. Your copy should be double-spaced, and on the first page you should put your address in the upper lefthand corner-it doesn't hurt to include your telephone number, too. In the righthand corner, put an approximate word-cound." Frank pauses, laughs, and sys: "Don't cheat, either. Most magazine editors can tell how long a story is just by looking at the print and riffling the pages."

Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.
앗 책을 다 읽은 줄 알았는 데 마지막 조 힐과의 인터뷰를 읽다 말았다. 어서 읽어야겠다.
