Weeping

John 11:28-37

28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus wept.

He never wept before when He met the poor, the weak, the blind, the hungry, or even at the front of the people who were going to stone Him. But now He was weeping. His tears look very interesting, as He had done many miraculous signs as the son of God, who was powerful and majestic. Why was he weeping in front of women, and the others, looking weak and powerless?

It seems that Mary was also the woman who cried often because even when she poured perfume on Jesus' feet, she wept(Luke 7:38 as she stood behind him at his feet weeping,), she must have felt sad to predict the death of Jesus. And now she is facing the real death of her beloved brother, Lazarus, so she is weeping with neighbors and friends.

I also weep very often. One day, at the church, standing beside me, my son asked me, "Mom, why are you weeping?" I said, I weep because I am thankful for the grace of God, who have forgiven my sins and gives all good things. And most of all, I weep for my son and daughter and my neighboring friends and relatives and all the others. The tears are not my intention, but it naturally comes out of my eyes, from deep in my heart, and I believe that it is the Holy Spirit that forces me to cry out.

In a nutshell, this scene shows that He lived as a son of Man, feeling sad and be sympathetic to people who were weeping, and He lived as a son of God, feeling sorrow and painful to see the humane death, which is the result of sins, leading to the spiritual eternal death.
