Myanmar’s army filed a new charge against Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the country’s democratically elected government, who was ousted in a coup two weeks ago, at a virtual trial held in secret (see main stories). She supposedly violated the country’s natural-disaster law. This new accusation comes on top of a charge of illegally importing walkie-talkies.

미얀마 군부는 민주적으로 당선된 국가 지도자인 아웅산 수치를 비공개 가상 법원에서 추가 기소했다. 군부는 아웅산 수치가 국가 재난법을 위반 혐의다. 이 혐의는 무전기를 불법 수입한 혐의에 추가된 것이다.

Two pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong pleaded guilty to charges related to protests in August 2019 against increased control of the territory by the Chinese government. Seven more, including Jimmy Lai, a newspaper tycoon, pleaded not guilty. All nine face charges both of organising and of knowingly taking part in an unauthorised assembly. Each charge carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

중국 정부가 홍콩 통제를 강화한 것에 반대하는 지난해 시위와 관련해 기소된 2명의 민주화 운동가가 유죄를 인정했다. 언론계 인사 라이 등 7명은 무죄를 주장했다. 총 9명이 불법 집회를 조직하고 의도적으로 참가한 혐의를 받았다. 각 혐의는 최고 5년 징역형에 해당한다.

A Dutch court struck down a nationwide curfew imposed in January to battle covid-19, ruling that the situation did not justify such restrictions on freedom of movement. Mark Rutte, the prime minister, encouraged people to still abide by the restrictions, describing them as “simply necessary”. The curfew led to mass protests across the Netherlands in late January.

네덜란드 법원은 코로나19 확산 방지를 위해 1월 내려진 전국 야간 통행금지령에 대해 철회 판결을 내렸다. 바이러스 확산이 이동의 자유를 제한할 정도는 아니라는 것이다. 반면 뤼테 총리는 이러한 통금은 필요한 조치이므로 제한에 따를 것을 국민에게 촉구했다. 통금 명령 이후 네덜란드 전역에서 시위가 일어났다.

Mining firms are choosing to return cash to shareholders rather than gamble it on new investment projects to increase output. BHP, the world’s largest miner, announced a bumper interim dividend of $5.1bn, after profits reached a seven-year high thanks to soaring iron-ore prices. Meanwhile, Glencore, another mining firm, said it would make a dividend payment worth $1.6bn.

광산업체는 생산량 증대를 위해 새로 투자하는 대신 주주들에게 배당금을 지급하기로 했다. 세계 최대 광산업체인 호주의 BHP는 철광석 가격 상승 덕분에 7년만에 최대 이익을 기록하면서 51억 달러의 중간 배당금을 지급한다고 발표했다. 또한 스위스의 글렌코어는 16억 달라의 배당금을 지급하겠다고 했다.

Italy attracted more than €110bn ($133bn) in orders for the sale of a ten-year government bond. The offering is the first since Mario Draghi became prime minister, raising investors’ hopes that the former boss of the European Central Bank can fix Italy’s covid-struck economy. Yields on ten-year bonds fell to a record low after Mr Draghi was asked to form a government last week (see main stories).

President Emmanuel Macron announced that he had no immediate plans to withdraw French soldiers from the Sahel after meeting virtually with leaders from five countries in the region. France currently has more than 5,000 troops deployed to fight jihadist insurgents. France’s president hopes to get more Europeans involved in this effort and to improve local military capacity.

마크롱 프랑스 대통령이 아프리카 사헬 지역에서 프랑스군 규모를 당장 감축할 계획이 없다고 밝혔다. 마크롱이 사헬 지역 주요 5개국과의 화상 정상회의를 가진 후 발표한 것이다. 현재 5천명 이상의 프랑스군이 극단적 이슬람주의 세력을 퇴치하고자 배치되어 있다. 프랑스 대통령은 현지 군사력을 강화하기 위해 더 많은 유럽국가가 참여하길 원한다.

A Democratic congressman accused Donald Trump, along with his former personal lawyer and two right-wing groups of conspiring to disenfranchise millions of black voters by preventing Congress from certifying the election results on January 6th. The civil lawsuit, brought by the NAACP on behalf of Bennie Thompson, accuses the men of violating the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. On Saturday the Senate acquitted Mr Trump of inciting the violence at the Capitol. Only seven Republicans voted to convict.
