Last week Facebook blocked news on its site in Australia, saying it should not have to pay for hosting links. The amended code exempts tech firms that make a “significant contribution” to the news industry—in other words, cough up and we will leave you alone. Facebook accepts.

A German court found a former Syrian intelligence officer guilty of participating in crimes against humanity. His trial was the first to consider alleged crimes committed by the regime of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president. Eyad al-Gharib was a low-level operative who arrested protesters—but prosecutors said he was part of a system that killed and tortured the opponents on an “almost industrial scale”.

Amnesty International stripped Russia’s jailed opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, of his status as a “prisoner of conscience”. The human-rights group said it had been “bombarded” with complaints about videos of Mr Navalny, filmed around 15 years ago, that appear to compare immigrants to cockroaches and rotten teeth. Mr Navalny’s supporters believe the complaints are a spurious attempt to discredit him by the Kremlin.

American regulators finished their review of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose covid-19 vaccine, finding it safe and effective. Requiring only refrigeration for storage, it should arrive as a lower-cost option in the American market within days. And while J&J’s vaccine may offer less protection against strains of the virus found in Brazil and South Africa, Moderna announced progress towards a booster shot that would augment vaccinations against those and other variants. Pfizer, meanwhile, reported results from a real-world study undertaken in Israel, showing its vaccine is 94% effective at preventing symptomatic covid-19.

Joby Aviation said it would go public, with a listing in New York. In a deal worth $6.6bn, the electric air-taxi startup will list through a reverse merger with Reinvent Technology Partners, a special-purpose acquisition company led by Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn. Joby, whose partners include Toyota and Uber, aims to begin passenger flights by 2024.
