Since the army toppled Myanmar’s civilian government a month ago, tens of thousands of Burmese have taken to the streets every day to protest against the coup. The army has so far refrained from brutally repressing the movement, as it did in previous democracy protests in 1988 and 2007, when thousands were killed. But the protests have persisted. And the junta’s patience is wearing thin. Soldiers are showing more willingness to fire live bullets, in addition to using water cannons and rubber bullets. Yesterday security forces fired into crowds in several cities across the country, killing at least 18 people, according to the UN Human Rights Office, in what was the bloodiest day since the protests started.

Thai police fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters outside a military base in Bangkok, who were demanding that King Maha Vajiralongkorn give up control of an army unit housed there. The 1st Infantry Regiment is one of several that the prime minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, transferred to royal control in 2019. A youth-led political movement has since formed, whose demands include Mr Prayuth’s resignation.

It is the largest single crackdown against the opposition under the new law to date. Many of those charged are accused of organising an unofficial primary in July with the aim of selecting the strongest pro-democracy candidates for a legislative council election.

A second former aide accused Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, of sexual harassment. Charlotte Bennett told the New York Times that Mr Cuomo had asked her sexually inappropriate questions in his office last spring. Earlier this week, another aide had accused him of unwanted kissing and touching in 2018. Mr Cuomo denied any inappropriate behaviour and ordered an independent inquiry into the allegations.
