Joe Biden’s stimulus package will add about one percentage point to global economic growth in 2021, according to the OECD. It will boost America’s growth rate even more; the OECD revised its forecast upward, from 3.2% to 6.5%. The $1.9trn measure has passed both chambers of Congress. Mr Biden is expected to sign it into law this week.

Russia’s covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, will be produced in Italy at facilities owned by Adienne, an Italo-Swiss pharmaceutical firm. It is the first EU country to agree to make the Russian jab. Under the deal Italy will produce 10m doses between July and January 2022. Sputnik V is yet to be approved for emergency use in Europe.

Japan’s GDP growth in the last three months of 2020 was revised down from 12.7%, at an annualised rate, to 11.7%. Firms spent less than expected; contributions to GDP from capital spending and private inventories were lowered. Separately, household spending fell by 6.1% in January year-on-year, as business hours were curtailed and shoppers stayed at home to reduce the spread of covid-19.

The World Health Organisation’s biggest-ever study of violence against women found that about a third have experienced physical (including sexual) violence. One in four have suffered it by their mid-20s. Most of this is inflicted by intimate partners: 27% of women aged 15-49 in the study reported such abuse.

The Japanese government barred overseas visitors from attending the Olympics this summer over covid-19 concerns. It fears they may bring new, more contagious variants into the country. Reports suggest that some 900,000 tickets have been sold outside Japan. With the postponement of the games last year costs have ballooned to at least ¥1.6trn ($15bn).

Around 200 protesters—mostly students—who had been trapped overnight in a district of Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city, managed to escape after police left the area. At least 40 people were arrested for participating in the nationwide strike. Protests around the country have taken place since the military coup on February 1st; at least 54 people have died. The army closed five media outlets which covered the demonstrations.

Indonesia’s food and drug agency approved the AstraZeneca-Oxford covid-19 vaccine for emergency use. On Monday the country of 270m people received more than 1m doses from COVAX, a global vaccine-sharing initiative. Indonesia began its vaccination drive in January. So far it has received around 38m jabs developed by Sinovac Biotech, a Chinese pharmaceutical firm.
