Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, ordered about 18,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Days of heavy rain have inundated the land around western Sydney, leading to the worst flooding in decades. The inclement weather shows little sign of abating; the New South Wales Bureau of Meteorology warned that the “situation is far from over”.

Saudi Arabia proposed a ceasefire plan to end the war that has raged between Yemen’s government (backed by a Saudi-led coalition) and Houthi rebels since 2014. It would reopen the airport at Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, and allow food and fuel into the war-torn country through the port of Hodeida. The rebels, who have recently increased attacks on Saudi oil sites, said the plan was “nothing new”.

A global shortage has forced several carmakers to curb production in recent months.

Riding on increased demand for takeaway meals during covid-19 lockdowns, Deliveroo started taking orders for its initial public offering, aiming at a valuation of up to £8.8bn ($12.2bn). The food-delivery startup reported that the total value of purchases on its platform in January and February increased by 121%, compared with the same period in 2020.
