A new report from the World Health Organisation into the origins of covid-19 has come under scrutiny. The WHO’s own director-general, Tedros Adhanom, said that the possibility that the virus had leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan had been insufficiently investigated. America issued a joint statement with 13 other countries expressing concerns about the report.

The crush at a stadium in Dar es Salaam was reported when it happened to have killed only five. Mr Magufuli died after a mysterious illness, thought by many to be covid-19, which he had played down.

BioNTech said it plans to make an extra 500m doses of its covid-19 vaccine this year, a 25% increase. The German firm, which developed its vaccine with Pfizer, expects to make $11.5bn in revenue in 2021 from the covid-19-jab contracts it has already signed alone. BioNTech’s management attributed the increased output to an expansion of its manufacturing capacity and supply network.

The International Criminal Court upheld the convictions of Bosco Ntaganda, a Congolese former rebel leader, for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in the country’s Ituri region from 2002 to 2003. Mr Ntaganda had appealed against a 30-year prison sentence imposed in July 2019. His crimes include murder, rape and sexual slavery.
