Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said the bloc was “ready to discuss” proposals to support a temporary waiver of intellectual-property rights for covid-19 vaccines. America, Britain and the EU had been blocking a proposal under debate by the World Trade Organisation to suspend IP protections to boost global production and distribution, but yesterday the Biden administration signalled its willingness to change course. A drop in vaccine-makers’ share prices followed. Germany, the EU’s biggest economy, still opposes a waiver.

Moderna made a quarterly profit for the first time in its 11-year history. The pharmaceutical firm—and maker of a covid-19 vaccine—reported net income of $1.2bn in the first three months of 2021. Sales of the vaccine accounted for $1.7bn of its revenue of $1.9bn, which leapt from merely $8m a year earlier.

After a short protest by 60 French fishing boats off Jersey, which caused both Britain and France to dispatch patrol vessels, the European Commission accused Britain of breaching the Brexit trade deal. Under the agreement French fishermen need new licences to continue fishing in the waters around the Channel Island, a British crown dependency. The commission said unforeseen “additional conditions” had been attached to the permits.

When he was running for office, Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s president, said that “a good criminal is a dead criminal”, and has promoted the use of deadly force to deter crime.

IBM claimed a breakthrough in its microchip technology. It said its new, two-nanometre chip is projected to perform 45% better than current 7nm chips, while using 75% less energy. Meanwhile, S&P Global Ratings, a credit-ratings agency, downgraded IBM, saying a spate of recent acquisitions and a proposed spin-off of part of its business made Big Blue’s timeline for reducing its debt uncertain.

America’s jobless claims fell to 498,000 last week, the fewest since March 2020. The number claiming Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, which helps those not eligible for regular jobless benefits, dropped by 20,000 to a bit more than 101,000. The labour market shows signs of rebounding, caused in part by the lifting of lockdown restrictions and reopening of businesses.

Joshua Wong, a pro-democracy activist in Hong Kong, was sentenced to another ten months’ imprisonment. He pleaded guilty to taking part in an unauthorised assembly last year marking the 31st anniversary of China’s massacre of protesters in Tiananmen Square. Mr Wong is already serving 17½ months in prison. Three others were jailed for four to six months.

홍콩 민주화 활동가 조슈아 웡이 추가 10개월 징역형을 받았다. 웡은 작년 천안문 사태 31주년을 기념해 불법 집회에 참여한 것에 대해 유죄를 인정했다.웡은 17개월형, 다른 3명은 4-6개월형을 복역 중이다.
